read the fine print....
Pros: When we finally got a car, it was excellent. Office personnel did their best to make up for snafu with car pick-up. Nice people, tried to be accommodating once we got over the "incident".
Cons: We arrived in Albuquerque sometime shortly after noon on a Saturday. When we arrived at the off-site location for the rental (it is less expensive to do it this way because you avoid the airport tax), where we had a pre-paid car waiting, we discovered that the site was not open - it had closed at noon and would not be open until Monday morning. Since we were traveling to Santa Fe for the week, this was inconvenient for a number of reasons - not the least of which, I felt completely uninformed about the closure time (she said it was Kayak's fault). We had to get back to Albuquerque on Monday wherein the Hertz person suggested we no longer had the rental because it has been more than 24 hours since we were to have picked it up. It didn't matter that they hadn't been open for 36 hours, this was policy. After much time and a great deal of angst, they finally got us a very nice car. Word to the wise, - read the small print. This bargain price also meant we could only have one person as driver - the one who rented the car - without doubling the cost of the rental. The Hertz folks took no responsibility for their closing hours over a busy weekend so once again, better to call the office you are using if not the airport. Phew, the result was fine but getting there nearly ruined our vacation.

Pros: No problems with pickup or dropoff. I received a larger car than I expected, which was more enjoyable to drive than an economy car, even though gas mileage wasn't as good as I wanted and gas was more expensive than I had planned for.
Cons: I drove only about 2 miles and the gas gauge dropped down one bar- the tank wasn't totally full- I had to fill it with 2.5 gallons for it to be completely full. Inside of windshield had been "cleaned" by widespread wiping of something greasy, so I had to use a squeegee on the inside to get rid of very nasty nighttime glare.

Cons: I rented this car through the web site. There was a disclaimer that they do not accept debt cards. I made the reservation with a bank card that is both a debt and a credit card. I could see that they had charged it and the web site said I had to show that same card on pickup. I just assumed that they had accepted it. However, when picking up the car I was told that, even though they had already charged the card, and even though stores accept it as a credit card they were refusing to honor it. This made no sense to me since they had already charged it. If I had know I would have brought another credit card but they specifically told me that I had to present the card that I had used on the web site. This whole thing is complicated bullshit. The man who had refused me told me to ask at all the other rental desks in the airport to see who would take my card. There were eight with a long line at each. I polity refused to leave until he suggested who I should ask first. Of course he knew who would take the card, and finally he told me to ask Advantage. They happily took my card with its $10,000 credit limit. I ended up paying $200 dollars more than the amount of my original reservation. This whole thing was an expensive and very disappointing waste of time. I will not rent from Hertz again and next time I will simply call Advantage first. Instead if automatically crediting my card when they refused to give me the car I was told I had to apply for a refund. I called that afternoon and was told they could not find the reservation. I was unable to call for many days because of travel. I have just spoken with Hertz and was told they were crediting my card with a full refund. I have no confidence that this will actually happen.

too much selling at the desk / wrong assumption about the contract
Cons: Hertz wanted to sell me upgrades and extra features ; i didn't appreciate this. Hertz assumed that by taking my email address, i had agreed to getting the contract via email. i absolutely did NOT agree to this. when i tried to call later I got customer- care people in Thailand or the Philippines. This was very disheartening.
