Vehicle was low on oil when I checked it, I had to
Pros: Customer service Representatives were good.
Cons: The rental vehicle should have been inspected better for maintenance issues, and corrected before releasing it.

Non verbalized fees added
Pros: People were friendly and pick up/drop off relatively easy. Car was as expected.
Cons: I was quoted $174 and was confirmed by the Rep at pick up. When asked about loss damage waiver I declined the suggestion. The representative proceeded to finish paperwork. After drop off I received a bill for about $360. After closer look at the paper work, th Rep added loss damage waiver and cost me an extra $30 per day. This is a poor customer experience since this was declined and not verbalized by the Rep at pick up.

Pros: there wasn't much to like -
Cons: I know I had left my passport in the rental and when I was able to reach them, no one seemed to now anything.

Terrible customer service
Pros: Clean SUV that did what it was supposed to do.
Cons: Came to rent an all wheel drive for a day trip into the mountains of new mexico with the family. Was told I was getting an all wheel drive, even paid extra for the upgrade and found out (after checking under the hood ourselves!) in the parking lot before we even turned on the car that it was in fact only a two wheel drive. It would have been incredibly dangerous if we found out on the icy mountain roads! Told the Payless Albuquerque airport team and the shear apathy and unwillingness to help us switch into a vehicle that was in fact what we paid for (even upgraded for) was unbelievable. They were rude to my wife and basically her that if she wasn't happy not getting what she paid for we could take ourself over to one of the other car rental counters... this after hours wasted on a same-day rental. Unacceptable. Finally got a smaller less comfortable all wheel drive almost 2 hrs later. When asked for the managers name and contact was given a first name and 1-800-Payless as the number, had to get specifics from another employee. When asked for a discount or compensation for their screw up, was told the manager is unavailable till next week and only he could give a discount. Honestly totally infuriating. Needless to say, my family won't be renting from them ever again and hopefully neither will whomever reading this review.

Charged 2x what I thought I would pay
Pros: Car was clean. Pick up was easy
Cons: I was not able to purchase the additional insurance offered online and had to pay Payless's very high rate which doubled the cost of the car.

So far off the mark.........
Pros: Easy return.
Cons: 1. Long line at the rental desk - with just ONE employee working there at the time. 2. They had NO (zero) cars available EXCEPT ONE Nissan Frontier mid-size pick-up truck. (I had reserved a compact car). The two renters in line ahead of me were told they could wait for a car to become available - or go to another car rental desk. 3. I chose to take the pick-up truck as I did not have the luxury of waiting an unknown amount of time for a compact. The rental price was the same as my compact reservation price, but I ended up paying a LOT more for gas.

Cons: 1) Mid size car I reserved was not available. So I had to rent a larger vehicle at increased cost. 2( Windows of vehicle, especially the windshield, were very dirty. Mediocre effort had been expended to clean them.

Payless screwed me
Cons: The day before we were to leave on our trip I checked with Payless to make sure everything was okay with our reservation. They told me I did not have a reservation that it had been canceled. I did not cancel it but they insisted that I did and would not honor the price that was on my reservation. If I wanted a car it would be double the original price. I called your customer service and they were no help. So I had to contact another car rental company and pay a lot more for a car. I will not use Payless ever again.

You Get What You Pay For
Cons: No cars available at pickup time, despite having a reservation; car was not clean; returned gas tank full, but was still charged (have to call to get removed) also have to review other unexpected charges. Price was almost half of the other agencies, so you get what you pay for,

Cons: I requested a full size vehicle and ended up with a Mazda cross over/suv. Not what I was looking for. Not a good looking vehicle. Passenger side wiper was not functioning properly The vehicle did not have windshield washer.

Cons: insurance is an added expense. would not take my city credit car information-had to have the card. so I ended up having to use my own credit card___Big hassle!!!

pay less, get less
Pros: The effort by the staff who checked us in for the rental was good.
Cons: No car was available to meet our reservation when we arrived. We waited for more than an hour for a vehicle of comparable value became available. Other customers were similarly disappointed. Although smaller vehicles were available, the staff claimed they were unable to adjust our rate if they downgraded us. We waited. Check-in for drop-off was similarly disappointing. No staff was on site. The key drop box was jammed; and it was impossible to complete the do-it-yourself drop off as required. The experience was quite disappointing.

Cons: The rental ended up being more than twice as much as it was advertised; pick up took an inordinately large amount of time even though I was the only customer being handled; I was subject to agressive attempts to up sell; and drop off took more than half an hour, again despite there being no other customers.

Pros: Good car
Cons: Overcharged. I was promised a charge around $240 upon pickup. I had paid $60 for insurance offered by kayak. The clerk tried signing me up for the insurance Payless offers, amounting to a total of over 500 dollars. Had i not been alert, i would have signed up for both policies. I was also overcharged on my credit card; Payless estimated the overall cost for the week would be around 240 dollars, though a charge of 319 dollars has appeared on my statement.

Pros: The employees I had interaction with were very nice. I just wish they had a way to staff the counter/booth all the time.
Cons: When I returned the car no one was in the booth. There was a note "I'll be back in 20 minutes". I was unable to wait 20 minutes because I had to catch a plane. It was uncomfortable just putting the keys in the box. I still have not received a receipt for my rental car 2 days later.

Pros: The Albuquerque rental center is amazing. Wonderful. The dropoff was especially easy and smooth. I'll be using Payless again, for sure.

Pros: Customer service and quality of the vehicle were excellent.
Cons: I HATE HIDDEN FEES! It's. Equivalent to being lied to. My $99 agreement became $172 when I turned in the car. To me it is fraud.

Pros: decent care for a reasonable price
Cons: at pick-up sales person tried to sell me an upgrade, then added some kind of roadside emergency coverage without my consent ($4.99/day), and misinformed me about local gas prices hoping to entice me to purchase pre-pay gas option. The cost shown on my original reservation was $205 and the initial contract the agent printed up was $275. I hate this kind of nickel-dime stuff at the desk and he had to redo the contract to remove the roadside emergency coverage that he hadn't mentioned and thought I wouldn't notice which cost me time at the counter. I know employees are trained in these deceptive practices and find it deplorable.

Pros: Absolutely nothing
Cons: Unbelievably slow, but that was only the beginning. The agent said my (only) card was being declined, twice. Called my bank, Payless had not been declined, hadn't even connected. I stood in line behind one person for a further 45 minutes, and this time the agent said they had a new "system", and it couldn't read my card! He suggested I try another rental company, so I tried, but cost was exorbitant. So after TWO AND A HALF HOURS trying to rent a car, almost all of it spent at the Payless desk, I decided to use a taxi. It was a good decision. They were cheaper than a car would have been, even Payless, prompt and courteous. This is the second time I've tried unsuccessfully to rent a car from Payless at ABQ, and for sure the last.
