Fly TAP. The Portuguese people are some of the nicer people in this world. The Italians are pompous and know they have the pope and some of the best food in this world and people will put up with there crabby ways to come to Italy. I do have to say that the weather is warmer here at the end of December than it is in the San Francisco Bay Area.(this was very surprising)..

With our daughter’s family (including young grandchildren) living in Belgium we’ve made the trip several times in the last year. Since we generally pay for an upgraded service level (Business for overnight and Premium Economy during the day) we like to make that transatlantic trip as long as possible (best service level on that leg) so LAX to Munich to Brussels works for us and Lufthansa has the most frequent flights.

Go to the airport early, LAX is the worst airport to fly out from. There is just so much traffic on the way to get there. We used the flyaway option in van nuys, ( buy your parking ticket in advance) costing us only 115 dollars for parking for over two weeks and it’s very secure. The buses go every 15 minutes from there directly to LAX. Best way to get to and from LAX. Check in was easy.

Use the self-check-in kiosk if you have a few check-in items. You can also ask for them to check your carry-on bags if you don't absolutely need to have them with you. Always be kind to the agents, they have stressful jobs and a little kindness goes a long way.

Better stay up the night before tire yourself out before or you will have trouble sleeping on the plane, since you are taking off at 3pm local time but arriving around midnight origin time and morning at the destination.

Board the flight with everyone since they don’t seem to check and the boarding scanning is no longer a scan of your documents. You walk through the gate one person at a time, even the kiddos. Luggage bins were so full. Check it in and don’t forget air tags. That provided great comfort to know your luggage’s proximity.

I would suggest calling the airline to make sure that their TV screens work on the back of the seats, and if they don’t work that the entertainment option would work on your cell phones.

Put some media on your phone and iPad...the wifi worked on the way there but not the way home...its finicky (unless u pay for it). There aren't that many options for the player in front of you. Also bring your own headphones with the appropriate jack that can plug in, they may not have one for passengers for free. Food is good but they may run out of what you want.

Turkish Airlines can create a lot of trouble for rerouting in case if missed flight. They were very rude, made us run from counter to counter and found us a solution after more than 2 hrs of waiting
