Flights from London: the best tips from KAYAK users' own experiences

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew from London to anywhere

Domestic flights only need a valid photo id like drivers license (I carried my passport anyway but wish I'd just left it in the safety of home).

If you have tight connection and previous flight is late , don't panic they will wait for you if you have connecting flight with same airline.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-SANSep 2024
Flight overall is good. Service is very good. Bring yourself some snacks, in case the food isn’t up to your taste.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLGW-KINSep 2024
Gone are the days of only needing to arrive 2 hours before your flight. My advice give yourself 3+ hours.
Verified travelerFlew with Qantas AirwaysLHR-SINSep 2024
Unless you’re flying Business or First Class, definitely take your own travel pillow - they make a difference.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-ORDSep 2024
BA had great food, should have brought a few more snacks and dressed more warmly though!
MeganFlew with IberiaLHR-LAXSep 2024
Pack light and know you can always get stuff when you land.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-INVSep 2024
I think the constant stress of gates and communication may be an area for improvement. Upon landing at Heathrowthere wasn’t a gate assigned until twenty minutes before departure. That may be Heathrow’s responsibility. It just created some stress about connecting.
Verified travelerFlew with KLMLHR-AMSSep 2024
Cannot check baggage more than 3 hours before flight and so need to stay in departures babysitting suitcases.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLGW-YVRSep 2024
Never fly BA through Gatwick. An old, under resourced airport which will absolutely negatively impact your journey
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-JFKAug 2024
People have to make sure they have plenty of time (2 hours minimum) if they need to change terminals. Heathrow is a monster airport, it's giant, so if you want to shop or eat or just look around, you need more than 2 hours between flights. Otherwise, it's great, the security was fast but thorough. I loved that I did not have to remove my shoes and the employees were patient and polite, not like at JFK. The shuttle buses are annoying, but at a huge airport like Heathrow, it's a must. The drivers of the shuttles are crazy, they don't care if people are falling down or not, they drive aggressively. However, people cannot fall down because the buses are packed to the gills. So, instead of shuttles, a looping airtrain would be a much more convenient and probably faster way of connecting the terminals, just like at JFK. The frequent flights between London and New York are much appreciated.
GaryFlew with British AirwaysLHR-EDIAug 2024
The overhead luggage bins are very small so they required us to check our hand carry luggage. I had to take my rechargable batteries out of my bag and put them in my rucksack. It would be a good idea to pack you hand carry luggage assuming you might need to check it in at the gate.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesLHR-PHLJul 2024
Make sure you are at the airport at least 3 hours early to ensure that you can check in, go through security, and so that you can find your departure gate within plenty of time so you are not rushing.
JamesFlew with British AirwaysLGW-MCOJun 2024
When Checkin in at the airport, if you request a window seat make sure it is a window seat and ask to see a seating plan before you accept the seat.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-ORDJul 2024
Gate 10 is a train wreck because there are multiple gates distinguished by a letter following A10. If possible get there as quickly as possible to find the appropriate gate.
SonyaFlew with British AirwaysLHR-NCEJul 2024
Arrive 2 hours before and you will still have plenty of time. Even for bag drop! Heathrow is a great airport

If flying business class I’d research which cabin your aircraft operates. BA have some old business class on the 380 and new business class on the 777. (And 350). The new cabin is so much better. But the food just isn’t as good as it used to be
AntonellaFlew with IberiaLHR-EWRJul 2024
London makes you take out every single toiletry even below 100ml and if they don’t all fit in one tiny bag, they make you throw it away. Check everything in your checked luggage!
Anne KatherineFlew with IberiaLHR-PHLJul 2024

Delta is my go to airline when I fly they have never lost my luggage or made me miss a connecting flight. The one time I missed a connecting flight because TSA was shorthanded and border entry lines were massive Delta booked me on a new flight the following morning and put me in a hotel for the night. 95% of Delta employees are friendly, cheerful and appear to be happy to to take time to help their customers.

1 - bring a portable battery backup because you can't rely on the outlets at your seat to be working. 2 - download movies/shows to your device, because you can't rely on your headphones or screen to be working. 3 - download any work, as possible, to your laptop, because you can't rely on WiFi to be working.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-EDIApr 2024
Research the airline baggage allowance and hidden fees. Allow a few extra minutes when checking baggage as attendants don’t check the bags for you. Customers check their own bags at a kiosk.

Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesLGW-MCOFeb 2024
The more you can do at home online before you leave makes it easier for you to just enjoy the airport before your flight. And just remember if you purchase food from WH SMITHS to eat it or bin it on the plane because it will add 30 minutes on your journey been escorted to extra security for having sandwiches. A reminder on the plane about food items to dispose it before you leave the plane would have helped.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-EWRFeb 2024
Even if you have a long layover, be prepared to travel a long distance to your gate once it gets announced. Do not delay in heading to the gate. Be prepared for a very crowded airport experience.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-BRUJan 2024
Be prepared. BA didn't provide a gate until 45 minutes pre-boarding, with only a 15-20 minute window for passengers to "board" a bus, to take them to their plane.

FAQs for booking flights out of London

  • Which London airport should I fly from?

Heathrow and Gatwick are busy airports that offer a lot of non-stop flights to other continents. Whereas London City Airport tends to be ideal for non-stop European flights. However, Stansted and Luton are very popular for budget travellers in Europe as they are hubs for low-cost airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet.

  • Are there hotels at London Airports (LON)?

If you can’t sleep on the plane, you might want to get a nearby LON Airport hotel the night before you travel. For example, there’s Aerotel in Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport, Sofitel at Gatwick’s North Terminal, Travelodge at City Airport and Premier Inn at Stansted and Luton airports. These hotels are a short walk from the terminal buildings.

  • Are there any family facilities at London Airports?

At London Airports you can use facilities to keep your kids entertained. In Heathrow there are Stay and Play areas located in all the terminals. These provide slides, play zones and activity sheets. Whereas at Gatwick there are Kids' Zones in both terminals, which provide fun and educational activities.

  • Is there Fast Track at London Airports?

If you want to speed up your journey through security you should get Fast Track, which is offered at all London Airports except City Airport. This helps you skip the queues so you get to the Departures area faster. At Heathrow this costs about £12.50, whereas it costs about £5 at Gatwick, £6 at Luton and £7 at Stansted.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from London?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from London.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from London?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from London is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from London?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to your destination with an airline and back to London with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from London?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from London up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of London

  • When you find cheap flights from London you can relax at various lounges before take-off. For instance, at Heathrow Airport (LHR) there is the Plaza Premium Lounge in Terminal 2, which costs around £40 per person. At Gatwick Airport (LGW) The Gateway Lounge in the North Terminal costs about £28. At Stansted Airport (STN) the Escape Lounge is around £20. Whereas at Luton Airport (LTN) the Aspire Lounge costs about £25.
  • If you’re flying from London on business then you should consider departing from London City Airport (LCY). This terminal is well-connected to the financial district in London and also the centre of the city.
  • When flying from London Airports it’s easy to reach the terminals using public transport. The Heathrow Express goes to Heathrow in around 15 minutes from London Paddington Train Station. The Gatwick Express goes to Gatwick in about 30 minutes from London Victoria. The Stansted Express to Stansted takes around 45 minutes from London Liverpool Street. The Thameslink Railway goes from St Pancras International to Luton Airport in around 30 minutes. Whereas the DLR takes you to City Airport in around 20 minutes from Bank Station.
  • If you have mobility limitations you should contact your airline two days prior to your departure. They will then provide assistance for you throughout the London Airports (LON).
  • To save time at London Airports you can use the Reserve and Collect service to order duty free before you get to the terminal. This is available at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted and means you collect your prepared items after security.

Good crew and a great experience. Only good things to say.

The meals were mediocre and the alcohol selection was poor.

Great thanks - a whole row to myself. Good food but film selection not great.

It is okay. Flight was on time to start and early to land

Fantastic. I am low vision and was impressed with how helpful and accommodating the service tam was. It was super appreciated! I was pleasantly surprised about how delicious the food was. Like, “I wish I had more even though I’m no longer hungry” delicious. 100% enjoyable trip.

The boarding process was such a chaos with everyone crowding at the gates. There was no structure. The onboard crew were fantastic and very good.

Boarding was a shambles, pushed us all onto the airbridge and then made us wait for ages

Seats were very uncomfortable. I paid extra for a seat with more leg room, the seat was no different than a seat at the back of the plane. Flight attendant was rude.

Spacious business class lie flat sear. 2 hour delay leaving LHR led to a misconnection in Phoenix. I was place on a much later flight but that would mean a 6 hour lay over - more than half the time it took to fly the 5000+ plus miles from London, That second flight was only an hour! The staff in London said they could do nothing which led to uncertainty through the long haul flight. Thr agents in Phoenix were very responsive put me on a 5 PM flight to SAN but that flight was delayed so we took off around 6. There is little storage for personal items in the pod. There was no vegetarian meals left so flight attnedant did her best to cobble a meal from snacks. All in all I was disappointed in the AA experience.

Very good. Flight on time. Cabin crew were all really friendly.

We were charged a ridiculous amount for a name spelling error on ticket which I would’ve corrected if I received pre-check info more than 1/2hr before flight. Then we were told at ticket counter that our bags were fine for boarding but then we’re charged another ridiculous amount to take in our luggage despite being told differently. Flight itself was great. Charges were unfair.

Apart from an email about re configuring passenger seating less than 24hrs before flying it was all good.

There were a lot (4 I think) of EasyJet flights leaving Agadir, we arrived two and a half ours before our flight. Very slow to get through the booking in, passport control and security!! We had booked in on line but had to Queue with others who had not to drop our bags off!,

We boarded and then sat on the tarmac for an hour….probably not E Jets fault. But the gentleman that checked us in and took our luggage was exceptionally friendly and calming for early morning/ confused passengers. As always, it’s the people that make or break an experience, right?

I was hesitant to book with a low cost airline due to previous experience but Easy Jet surpassed my expectations. I would definitely book a flight with them again! Seemless booking, upfront about baggage fees, professional, and helpful staff.

Kayak sent several notifications that the flight was late. This contradicted the information on the airport boards. This was extremely confusing and we very nearly missed the flight purely because we double checked with the info desk when the flight stays said’closed’. Kayak notifications are therefore unreliable and pointlesa

Usual issues with flight delay. Perennial problem of travel by plane.

i didnt go this was a hacker booked this flight on my debit card !

Delayed almost 2 hours sitting on plane. No updates at all from flight deck and virtually no updates from cabin crew

Long delay resulted in my being unable to catch a train home and resulted in an additional £76 cost for an Uber

I bought my flight, insurance etc early and paid over £200. But had i waited until closer the time the price was much cheaper, i appreciate that it could've been more expensive but it wasn't. A better discount for booking early would be better than your current one

ontime and super quick boarding and disembarking. I made it in 6 min from airplane through passport control to the train platformin Cologne. Amazingly quick airport.

On time boarding, on time departure and early arrival. As it should be. Yes, the comfort and benefits are very poor, but therefore the ticket is 6 times cheaper than with a flag carrier. So I am not complaining about it. You get what you pay for.

There plane had a technical pricken so we had to disembark, but the replacement aircraft was provided within one hour so there was not much delay.

Flight diverted to Warsaw and passengers offloaded onto coaches whilst the plane took off again and flew to Gdansk…

Miserable staff did not want to be there. Very poor atmosphere boarding. Then just basic flight.

We were diverted to warsaw and there was zero information. We were just forced to disembark and off we go good luck the reat of the way. We all had to go our ways to find a way home!!!! Horrible horrible and it cost us alot of money to get a hotel and trains 4:30 pm next day.

Long delay was made worse by lack of information and long time in queue waiting for the plane to arrive

How terrible! Extremely bad! I can not even wait for 5 minutes, because the Berlin airport does not work in the security facilities and can handle people. No communication, although we were assured by about 50 travelers that the airline is informed and is waiting for us.

Blood contaminated tissue was stuffed to the back of the seat in front of us.

Flight was okay however bags were left in London even though we had a 7 hour layover. Bags are yet to be confirmed to reach final destination. Horrible work.

Quiet and comfortable aircraft, pretty smooth flight. Very comfortable business class cabin with decent entertainment. Good service from the crew. All in all a good experience.

Why does a reputable airline like BA allow a miserable domestic airline like AA to operate its flights? There is no comparison between the two

When i booked my flight, my ticket shows that i have 2 pieces of luggage allowance. Once i got into the check in, i was informed that i needed to pay extra for my two suitcases, and was put into a very precarious situation, I had to pay close to £200 for my two suitcases and these were not extra burgages, I felt extremely disappointed. In case i never had the kind of money, it meant that i would have missed my flight

Boarding is a mess. They never check group # so lots of people crowding in. Comfortable seats this flight. I had an empty seat next to me, very convenient. Food was really not good, but I was starved. The pizza snack thing was horrible. Crew was grand. They really make it enjoyable.

Crew very helpful and friendly. Food is so so. Main meal is not always the best. Did have a choice of a snack part way which was either a cookie, corn snack, or similar. Second kind of meal was basically like a pizza pastry that really wasn’t a favorite but probably a European snack? Screens and selections of movies, tv and such were good. No WI-Fi unless you buy so no free texting or such on the long flight but I think that might be any overseas flight.

LCY airport is an amazing airport and I love the flight from LCY to FRA with BA. Efficient, easy, comfortable and great luggage allownace with BA. I iused to fly predominantley LH, but the service and price - benefit ratio of Lufthansa has deteriorated a lot over the last 5 years. Whereas BA keeps an excellent service level with friendly staff.

Flight Attendant Karen Lynn was an absolute delight. She assisted in every portion of the services provided throughout the flight, aided with any and all concerns expressed by passengers, and even helped comfort an upset child who was one of five of a traveling family. This quality of service is what keeps me coming back to American. Thank you!

The airplane was old. Some things didn’t work out of middle seat was broken. The rest was OK.

The worst, flight cancelled because the aircraft was not full. Heathrow ground crew totally not helpful and arrogant. Lady proposed us flight with 40min layover instead of direct and said it is our problem of course she was unable to do anything as everything was beyond her control she claimed. after calling on hotline another flight was booked. Flight was cancelled last second so we could not take direct from Zurich but we had to stay overnight in London.

The crew at Check-in was very helpful. It’s was appreciate.

It’s a budget airline. You get what you pay for. They insisted on getting us out of the gate and into our slot on time. They got us to the destination safely. Aircraft was clean and well maintained. What more could we want

Half an hour delay. Squeezed into a small Departure Lounge with very few seats. Noisy flight with screaming unruly kids. Loud IPads and Phones. Heaven!

Were delayed in the airport for 5 hours with no explanation. Flight kept getting delayed by an hour at a time and wizz air staff were no where to be found

The flight was delayed 5 hours and I'm and invalid,I wan a refund for this

The cabin crew on that flight were super fantastic and super helpful. They were so polite and considerate that i felt i travelled with a 5star airline.

Delayed delayed delayed - always with Wizzair. Staff were friendly and well mannered but clearly the company is unorganized and the aircrafts are outdated.

It's a budget airline. Great for short flight. Smooth landing.

4 hr delay and only told less than 2hrs before. Only given water and nuts on the flight as complimentary service. Left to wait in rain before boarding.

To be honest I did not like anything. Communication to why my flight was cancelled mid air 2 and half hours into my flight. Customer service desk were not helpful with providing information or a solution on what can be done.
