Flights from London to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from London to the United States

Boarding was easy, organized and moved quickly at Heathrow. Flying premium economy is worth it on the longer flights. More leg room and no checked bag fees to pay. You may order your meals 30 days in advance. One also gets a comfort bag at each seat that includes a blanket, small neck pillow, and toiletry kit with toothpaste, toothbrush, socks, lotion, eye mask. Very handy on those long flights! Bring a light weight jacket or sweater as night flights can be cooler than day flights. Be polite and smile as the crew try their best to keep you safe and comfortable.

I wish I'd known that there were food and shopping opportunities at the B gate area. This was a lovely, NOT busy place to spend time. I'd have gone directly there if I'd known. Definitely a nice place to wait.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-BOSMar 2025
Try to get an aisle seat and walk around the plane as often as possible. Your legs will thank you
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-ORDApr 2025
Make sure to allow ample time between connecting flights. I have to hoof it when I realized that TSA required bags to be picked up and rechecked.
MichaelFlew with British AirwaysLHR-ORDApr 2025
Have a light luggage as much as you can. Boarding gate walk is not a joke.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-EWRMay 2025
Gate assignments are made shortly before boarding and each letter dedicated terminal group is separated by a long walk or a crowded rail ride. The metro ride between the terminals and the city can be complicated if you go in with no research. We consider ourselves capable people but Londons rail system is a mess to get a grasp of.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-JFKJan 2025
Prepare for the unexpected. It’s a long flight and anything can happen. Have some snacks and drinks with you. And other emergency items you may need.
ShawnFlew with British AirwaysLHR-BOSDec 2024
Know that gates are posted just about an hour before takeoff and it takes a bit of time to actually get to the gate. If you make a mistake there is no train back- you have to walk to the correct area and that are at least 10 minutes apart. Make sure to have ALL liquids ready to place in the tray at TSA
AlastairFlew with British AirwaysLHR-SFOFeb 2025
Make sure your free checked luggage is for outward and return flights.

If you have tight connection and previous flight is late , don't panic they will wait for you if you have connecting flight with same airline.

Flight overall is good. Service is very good. Bring yourself some snacks, in case the food isn’t up to your taste.

Take the 10.40 flight not the 14.30 as it took nearly 2 hours to clear Orlando airport as there weren’t many immigration staff on duty - when i did it last year I breezed through at the earlier time
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-BWINov 2024
Beware of London underground and bus schedules always allow plenty (double?) advertised schedule timing for services to LHR, from city and suburbs!

Download all your music. Add shows and movies to your queue. Bring short so you can relax. Bring long charger cords.

Heathrow is a large busy airport that requires a lot of walking.
SYBIL BRENNANFlew with British AirwaysLGW-MCOSep 2024
Beware that they can change your flight last minute and put you on a flight that arrives to a different airport from your connecting flight. You are responsible for finding the transport to your connecting flight
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-JFKAug 2024
People have to make sure they have plenty of time (2 hours minimum) if they need to change terminals. Heathrow is a monster airport, it's giant, so if you want to shop or eat or just look around, you need more than 2 hours between flights. Otherwise, it's great, the security was fast but thorough. I loved that I did not have to remove my shoes and the employees were patient and polite, not like at JFK. The shuttle buses are annoying, but at a huge airport like Heathrow, it's a must. The drivers of the shuttles are crazy, they don't care if people are falling down or not, they drive aggressively. However, people cannot fall down because the buses are packed to the gills. So, instead of shuttles, a looping airtrain would be a much more convenient and probably faster way of connecting the terminals, just like at JFK. The frequent flights between London and New York are much appreciated.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesLHR-PHLJul 2024
Make sure you are at the airport at least 3 hours early to ensure that you can check in, go through security, and so that you can find your departure gate within plenty of time so you are not rushing.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-PITJun 2024
By your own food and have your own music. Upgrade your seat if you have the funds!
SimonFlew with British AirwaysLHR-LAXJun 2024
If flying business class I’d research which cabin your aircraft operates. BA have some old business class on the 380 and new business class on the 777. (And 350). The new cabin is so much better. But the food just isn’t as good as it used to be
JamesFlew with British AirwaysLGW-MCOJun 2024
When Checkin in at the airport, if you request a window seat make sure it is a window seat and ask to see a seating plan before you accept the seat.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-ORDJul 2024
Gate 10 is a train wreck because there are multiple gates distinguished by a letter following A10. If possible get there as quickly as possible to find the appropriate gate.
KateFlew with British AirwaysLHR-DFWJun 2024
Leave plenty of time for layover in US as the queues for immigration are very long and you are likely to miss your connecting flight
PhilFlew with British AirwaysLHR-DENAug 2024
Sit in the front part of the plane if you want service.
WendyFlew with IberiaLHR-PITJul 2024
This is a good service to a smaller gateway airport. It's usually full. This service is why we selected BA. If you've prepaid for your seats be prepared for them to switch the plane configuration and reassign your seats. You'll have to apply for this refund too since it's not automatic. These refunds should be automatic not a chore for you to get your money back, especially when you have selected seats you personally want.
AntonellaFlew with IberiaLHR-EWRJul 2024
London makes you take out every single toiletry even below 100ml and if they don’t all fit in one tiny bag, they make you throw it away. Check everything in your checked luggage!
Anne KatherineFlew with IberiaLHR-PHLJul 2024
Need more snacks. As meals not big and need more to eat Also take own water on board as not enough drinks offered from cabin crew - can feel dehydrated during flight
PamFlew with IberiaLGW-MCOApr 2024
If flown with various airlines over 25 years, they have all been very good, I wouldn't date one over the other fur service, baggage allowance and flight cost are my deciding factors. Terminal C the new term I am at Orlando is very spacious, clean, clear signage, but be aware there is a 10 minute walk from the plane to the luggage collection and border control area. Ask for assistance if you have any issues walking that far yourself or with children.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesLHR-SFOMar 2024
Heathrow is vast, allow plenty of time to drop bags and go through security. At San Francisco the immigration takes a bit of time and we had to wait around 1.5hrs, bare this in mind when booking car rental. The is a shuttle train from the airport to the car rental area which is very slick and efficient.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-BOSMar 2024
If you are arriving on a late flight check in to an airport hotel at Logan. Good choice, easy access and good start to your trip
SuzanneFlew with British AirwaysLHR-PITMay 2024
1 - bring a portable battery backup because you can't rely on the outlets at your seat to be working. 2 - download movies/shows to your device, because you can't rely on your headphones or screen to be working. 3 - download any work, as possible, to your laptop, because you can't rely on WiFi to be working.
JenniferFlew with United AirlinesLHR-IADMay 2024
Good luck with the flight, make sure you eat before you board the plane because that's a long flight for the food that is served on that plane.
Juan LuisFlew with DeltaLHR-JFKApr 2024
- Enter as much information as possible using the Delta or Virgin Atlantic app. - Confirm which is the Terminal of your departure. - Arrive three hours early at the airport.
EmilyFlew with British AirwaysLHR-ORDMar 2024
Bring as few liquids as possible or put them in checked bag. They are very strict at Heathrow about all of them fitting into one small ziplock bag
Ana-MariaFlew with IberiaLHR-SFOMar 2024
In London triple check your flight they have multiple leaving for the same destination once - it is easy to get them confused
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-AUSMar 2024
Eat before your flight if possible as inflight meals are pretty bad.
KaishaFlew with British AirwaysLHR-MSYFeb 2024
If flying during Mardi Gras season, prebook a cab from the airport as you may be waiting a while. Security is swift
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesLGW-MCOFeb 2024
The more you can do at home online before you leave makes it easier for you to just enjoy the airport before your flight. And just remember if you purchase food from WH SMITHS to eat it or bin it on the plane because it will add 30 minutes on your journey been escorted to extra security for having sandwiches. A reminder on the plane about food items to dispose it before you leave the plane would have helped.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysLHR-EWRFeb 2024
Even if you have a long layover, be prepared to travel a long distance to your gate once it gets announced. Do not delay in heading to the gate. Be prepared for a very crowded airport experience.
WarrenFlew with United AirlinesLHR-IAHJan 2024
The ground transportation situation (Uber, taxis) at International Arrivals (Terminals D/E) is frankly pathetic for a major American city. Way too many people and cars for the allotted space. I would recommend taking the mini-train to another terminal (A,B or C) and getting an Uber there, rather than trying to navigate International.
Verified travelerFlew with FinnairLHR-BOSDec 2023
If you’re looking for a hassle free and good customer experience, avoid BA; Fly American. As soon as you board the plane, set your watch to local US time to help adjust to the time difference.

Crew was excellent. Comfort seats not as nice as other kinds of planes.

Not a "Delta" issue, but a JFK issue: We booked a connecting flight with 3 1/2 hours between to clearn immigration and customs. Our inbound flight (BCN to JFK) was on the taxiway 45 minutes which ate into our layover time. Immigtration was insanely quick with the CBP MPC app; however, clearing TSA (again, after we were ALREADY cleared in Spain on the inbound international flight) took over 95 minutes. This left us with 10 minutes before boarding the connecting flight (JFK to SAN) to walk to the far end of Terminal 4 and try to find food. We didn't find any food that could promise to serve us in under 10 minutes so we boarded the Delta flight after coming off a plance and an 8-hour flight knowing that we wouldn't be served any food on the next 5 1/2 hour flight. I feel like Delta needs to put pressure on the JFK TSA to open more screening stations (by our count, we saw only 5 scanners open and a line of - as we said - over 90 minutes. The insult is that we WERE ALREADY SCREENED through TSA, but as you come off one flight into the USA, you have to go through the whole process again. It seems like if you have a connecting flight, there should be a way to pass through immigration and customs without needing to return through TSA.

The way BCN airport handled boarding was a huge improvement over our trip to Spain from JFK. Instead of gate-mosquitos edging in before their zone was called, in BCN they had clearly marked lines for Zones 1-8 and people just lined up correctly. The flight itself was uneventful. The meal (curried chicken and rice) was one of the better meals we've had on Delta. Entertainment options were plentiful, power chargers were available in Main Cabin, and seats were decent. Flight staff were very friendly and positive throughout the 8 hour flight.

It was a great flight and the stewards and stewardess were all kind and accommodating!! The seats were comfortable and entertainment screen excellent!

The checkpoint hornets are always looking fhrough Americans' luggage keeping what they deem impassible! Grrrrr!

There are 4 flights in consecutive gates with about the same departure time. Two flights were boarding at the same time. One was delayed or boarding would be happening at the same time. I am not sure what Delta and LAX need to do to have a better layout at the end of Terminal 2

Flight was an hour late, who knows why. It was OK, nothing outstanding.

Only not having an assigned seat was an issue. Rest was great

There was a security issue at the airport and we were unable to land. We circled endlessly and then landed at another airfield for fuel. We then circled the airport again, almost landed but didn’t fully touch down before circling again. I am thankful to the crew for keeping us safe- the issue was the airline and staff at the airport getting us seats on our connecting flights. That part was hours of searching for someone and getting in double my steps.

Boarding was organised and relaxed. Crew were fantastic! Seats were lacking padding causing butt pain and stiffness.

The flight delay in Dallas created a domino effect that impacted all connecting flights, leading to an increase in the number of connections. As a result, I missed my flight from Casablanca to Marrakech due to the tight turnaround when landing in Casablanca. CMN Airport was understaffed; only one employee was available to assist passengers while others just stood by and watched. It was an extremely frustrating situation. Many passengers were crying and banging their hands on the counter while talking to customer service representative Allabough. Unfortunately, Allabough couldn’t change my flight in the system. At the same time, I was on the phone with an American Airlines customer service representative named Solomon, who said he couldn’t make the change either. So, I decided to take an ONYA Voyages train from Casablanca to Marrakech to reach my destination on Friday, June 26. It turned out to be an unpredictable trip.

The flight was fine and the crew awesome. The problem is ORD and AA. Computers went down, ORD fell apart and a 40 min flight turned into a 3 hour trip. Guess the answer is to not try and fly to ORD after noon. But, as I said, crew was awesome and did everything they could to lesson the flight time.

Almost a 6 hour flight and the only food option is a cheese plate… and chips. Also how is it there are no options for texting on American. I’ll be going back to delta and united.

This flight never occurred because AA couldn’t get their act together.

Terrible. Cancelled my original flight. It made getting a boarding pass difficult. The AA employee (in a loud voice, so everyone around could hear) griped at me for not getting a boarding pass 24 hours before. I asked how I was supposed to do that when I had no idea what flight I was going to be on. She said (loudly), “Talk to AA customer service, not me!” I could certainly tell serving customers was not important to her. Our new flight was set to a completely different city. We had to change our rental car, and the price went way up. It took 2-1/2 hours to get checked in. By then our new flight had left. We ended up on stand by and had to split up the family to get to our destination. It cost us the whole first day of the trip. AA needs to employ people who actually care about doing a good job. I suppose those people are getting harder to find, but atleast try.

A cookie and a soda, packed like sardines, will never be a positive experience. Also, boarded a 5:30 flight at 7:45pm

Am still mad at American airlines. You should know it's us travel nurses who are your customers and you treat us like nonsense it's not ok. American airlines took my money, no refund for whatsoever. A trip that was of 466 and I paid 466 and 833 then they chose for me where to sit and refund my seat choices and gave me expensive seats for 79 USD. Kayak doesn't help at all after booking you are on your own. Skyscanner is better

Flight was good & early meaning the gate was changed. With gate change there were no wheelchairs & the gate attendant left without making sure wheelchairs were coming to the changed gate. I had to go to another attendant at another desk to get this done.

This was a horrible experience. For a first class experience, my chair was held together by 3M tape - and I have a photo. The crew weren’t very attentive, somewhat dismissive and forgot my drink and snack, the chair reclined about 3 inches on a 6-hour cross country flight. I was also not informed that there was no lounge available in Newark airport because of renovations, so all around this was one of the worst experiences and I would actively avoid both American and Alaska Air going forward.

The flight was fine but the 8 hour delay in Chicago was awful - 5 gate changes and repeated delays without an explanation. No vouchers. Nothing.

Great experience. The flight was smooth with very little turbulence. We were in premium classic, so lots of leg room.

Didn’t know you had to pay for earbuds and food on flight. Sounds awesome and better way to not waste food or items. Comfort of flight is was amazing other than that

Unexpectedly was surprised with the space on flight in economy and the price.

I was not expecting having to pay for headphones, water and basic food in a 9 hours flight. Price for this flight was as high as any other, still I had to pay 4 lbs for a can of sprite. On top of that flight attendance gave a bothered look when I asked her for some ice for my soda. She reluctantly when to get it, brought me literally 3 cubes and walked away without looking at me to avoid another request. I couldn’t believe it. She was soooo rude. I will never book on Norse again and I will let everyone I know about this. Unforgivable, very bad customer service.

Great crew. Customer support is pretty much non existent. I had 2 tickets that were not used, the flight was overbooked. I think I should have been reimbursed for the unused tickets.

The movies were super old. The crew did not offer WATER???? 5 hours os flight and did not get WATER? Norse is the worst company I ever used and never will use again.

Why call us to board if we’re going to be made to stand in the tunnel for 20 minutes. Really hard for people with little children. Plus it took me ages to check in because my seat in Premium was overbooked so I didn’t actually have a seat. I did end up receiving my seat in Premium but there was a lot of stress and confusion beforehand. Hope is it possible to overbook seats? Especially in Premium!

We flew one way from Gatwick, London to JFK NY For 2 people $1200 and no food offered not even water. You had to buy food. Norse advertises as a low fare transatlantic airline, they may want rethink that. Crew, flight was fine. Ironically we flew American from JFK to Heathrow for $1000 (2people) and included food and drinks.

Longest check in line I have ever seen- brutal and airline personnel hustled me about the size of my bag even though I showed them that it measured exactly to the measurements posted on their site. Just super annoying- I get it - it’s a budget airline and you get what you pay for. Most of the flight were young people who seemed to have never experienced international travel. It’s worth paying for a seat otherwise you will be uncomfortable.

We flew premium on the way TO London but went back to economy for this flight. The differences I note here may be colored by changing service. The crew was professional and polite but cold on this flight and class of service. They seemed to want to have as little to do with us as possible, beyond providing the basic services in economy. The aircraft was still good though, and the pitch was about as tight as expected - manageable but no extra personal space to spare. Overall I would certainly fly Norse Atlantic again, given the opportunity.

As always a terrible experience. AA stole a day from my vacation days planned to be spent with my Family. Response: delays related to weather issues.

Even in the premium economy, I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable. I hated that booking through Kayak, it wasn't clear that it was a Level flight, not Iberia. Everything felt cheaply made and not at all worth the airfare we paid.

The flight was over two hours delayed. The aircraft was somewhat dated.

Luggage arrived damaged and protective plastic was lost. I need customer service to contact me or the number for customer service. Thanks.

Provided a good service and I will use it again. Thanks,

Boarding was not well coordinated. I asked twice at the Level check-in area about the MIA flight. At no point did they say the check-in would be at another counter. Fortunately, another passenger was equally confused and got the REAL story from the airport’s info center. Further, my minor child was tagged “SSSS” on their boarding pass. Level should have notified TSA about him being a minor. Instead, the entire family went through the SSSS process, not just our son. When his name was called out at the gate, it was announced in Spanish. No English announcement was made. The food on board was bearable. The crew was adequate, despite not being Level/Iberia crew (Level contracted out our flight to “World2Fly Airlines” - a company I have never heard of!). The onboard entertainment was very limited. They did not even offer a flight tracker option. Nor were music selections offered. Like TAP and Aer Lingus, I will think twice before booking Level ever again.

This ticket was canceled and I did not find out until it was time to check in. I believe the vendor is at fault. Cheap tickets.com I would like to elaborate on the situation to kayak. Can you give me an email address?

You get what you pay for. In general I like the service and flight attendants.

Excellent! Outstanding customer service, the best service I have received. Food was served, dinner, snacks, beverages, crew was there to greet you. 10/10

Charging $300 to be able to pick a seat next to your wife was nothing less than extortion.

The food was very good and it came multiple times

Flight from LGW to JFK delayed by 4 hrs No explanation given until the pilot said the delay due to planned maintenance on the aircraft

We arrived late to London, and consequently were 5 min. late to be allowed through security for our next flight. Even though dozens of people missed the same flight, BA did not radio ahead to hold open security for an extra 5-10 min. to allow people to get on the flight. This caused an additional 6 hour delay in London after waiting over an hour in Customer Service to get rebooked. They did not have enough staff on hand to help people in a timely manner. Not at all happy with the BA's customer care or customer service.

All service prior to the flight was terrible: online check-in not working, no customer service tel,, multiple airport scanners not working, A huge mess.

CONSTANT ERROR MESSAGE THAT THE WIFI COULD NOT BE PURCHASED DUE TO INABILITY TO CONNECT PAYMENT SYSTEM VIA SATELLITE. THIS HAPPENED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. THE MAIN REASON I TRAVEL IN PRIORITY IS TO BE ABLE TO WORK FOR WHICH I NEED ACCESS TO INTERNET. .

They lost my luggage. Lady who was helping with it in Austin was rude. Not very helpful!

Waited 3.25 hours in plane only to have the flight cancelled.

More space, of course. a footrest! more room to walk. Movie selection was awful. Some good documentaries would help if the movies can't be better. The flight itself was great, crew was great.

Better synchronizing the boarding processes. The audio announcements, the personnel and the digital signage were not saying the same thing. All confusion.

The first class seats were unusable, mine at the end of the flight, my husband's in the middle of the flight, and the one next to me was unusable either, they had to move the person to another seat.
