Pros:

Alamo was great. But it was my second choice, after my first choice -- some no name rental agency called Mex, selected initially via Kayak, which routed me through Rentcars.com -- was a friggin disaster. I landed at 6 pm, the time of my reservation, only to discover that the rental office was already closed. There was no one to help me, no number to call, no customer service from anyone in that chain, including Kayak. It was a friday evening at 6. I tried 4 other rental agencies; they were either out of cars or were asking insane amounts of $$ for them. I had to get a ride from the airport, and come back the next morning to rent from Alamo. (Which was great.)

Cons:

Alamo was great. Avoid Mex Rent a Car and Rentcars.com at all costs. No one picks up the phone at Mex and you can't leave a voicemail. The number for Rentcars doesn't work, and the email responses are all in Portuguese. I'm not kidding. Why Kayak continues to use these vendors is a mystery to me. Makes me reconsider my choice in travel apps.

Cons:

Don’t oversell cars! If I book a pickup, giving me a dodge caravan minivan because you oversold pickup trucks isn’t providing excellent service.

I chose sixth because on KAYAK it says that their rental car agency is in the terminal as opposed to the shuttle. Every rental car agency in the San Diego airport is in the rental car center which is a long way away from the airport and requires waiting in a huge line to get to it. The counter was understaffed – I canceled on the spot and booked Avis which is what I should’ve done from the beginning

Pickup at SAN was a nightmare. Dollar gave me online checkin and it still took about 57 minutes to get my car and exit the rental area. They were understaffed, ignorant of the process, and inefficient.

I prob would have preferred the car size I reserved. I was upgraded to a bigger car which was fine but a bit cumbersome. I also would have preferred clarity upfront on how toll roads with no toll booths would be handled.

Pros:

Car was comfortable, clean and drove easily - lousy mileage, but we got the sense that Californians dont care much, given the number of gas guzzlers we saw on the road at over $4.00/gal in most service stations - mixed in with Tesla's and Prius's. Odd contrast.

Cons:

All good with exception of Drop-Off. Unclear directions in the final stretch of the exercise (needed to turn up a lane in the garage that was hidden behind other cars). No staff present and when a fellow eventually showed up, he did not check the car, just told us to leave the keys in the car and all else would be dealt with - whatever that means - if there is any disagreement on gas (we filled up), damage (there was none), etc., how would one verify it after the fact?

I reserved a Nissan Pathfinder only to show up and get a Kia Sorrento. 6 people with luggage will not fit in a Kia. We had to pay a lot extra to get a Ford Expedition because they didn't have a Nissan or any SUV similar. The guy was really nice and gave us a discount for having to upgrade. I don't appreciate paying for one vehicle on this site only to show up having to pay hundreds more for a vehicle that will actually work. I will never book through here again.

It was the fastest I was in and out of a rental office. The individual working at the drop off in Palm Springs was really nice. I can't tell you how disappointed I was that the type of car I reserved was not there since I made the reservation ahead of time.

There was a problem with my reservation dates when I arrived to pickup my vehicle. The representative behind the counter assured me that they fixed my issue and I left with my vehicle. I wasn’t give a physical copy of my contract. When I dropped of my vehicle I was told that my vehicle was late and that I brought it back with less fuel than when I left. I know this isn’t true because I photographed my fuel level when I received my vehicle. I spoke with 2 representatives on the phone and one at the return counter and they all basically told me that there wasn’t anything they could do. Finally, I was told that Avis would adjust my fees. This has yet to be done. I will not being using Avis car rentals in the future.

1 person at the dollar/thrifty counter for 20 people in line. After travelling all day and then having to tale an airport shuttle.to a.counter who's line is out the door with only one person working is highly disappointing. The wait to move was awful. I went to the Hertz rental place that was on the Kayak website and it wasn't the correct rental place. The place Kayak setup was in Mexico not the Untied States so I had to call Hertz to change my rental. Then the price doubles + for the rental because it was the Hertz rental at the Airport. I was not happy at all. And the car they offer me is a Dodge Journey and they are junk too many buttons in bad places, very bad design. But I take it because I am all ready leaving and hour late. No I was not happy and will look else where next time I go.

The office texted me while I was in the air flying to my destination and informed me they were closing the office and had no car to lend me. It put me in a precarious situation as I was traveling with my parents who are in their 90s.

My reservation with Hertz called for the car to be picked up at San Diego Airport on Saturday at 3PM. When I got to the hertz pick up location I was told that someone had changed my pick up location to another Hertz office on the US side of Tijuana, Mexico, some 30 to 40 minutes away from the airport. Furthermore, there was no shuttle service to the alternate location. This was unsatisfactory to me and did not meet my requirements. As a result, I was forced to rent with some "no name" agency that normally services high risk customers. The rental from them was significantly more expensive, the car, although it ran well, had over 220,000 miles, had numerous scratches, a cracked windshield, worn upholstery and the cruise control didn't work. Furthermore, one of the tires kept leaking air and I had to put air in it on 3 different occasions. Based on this experience, I would not recommend Hertz or KAYAK nor will I use them in the future.

everything was great but did not receive a truck with a full tank. the dial gauge on the dashboard showed the nail as full but the digital fuel gauge showed fewer miles than how I returned it. I explained this to the rental agent but he just blew me off.

I payed for a Sante Fe but got a Tuscon because I didn't immediately notice the difference. It worked out fine, but the Sante Fe is superior from what I learned.

Ace had great pricing and pickup and drop off was quick and easy. Jenny helped us check in and was very nice and helpful. She gave my wife and I several restaurant recommendations while we were in town for the weekend. Car was nothing special and drove a little bit run down, but it was fine for the few days we used it. Would use them again because of the customer service, ease of booking, and value.

I was able to choose the exact car I wanted and was even able to reserve a cooler and boogie board to use for the week. The car was in like-new condition. The free shuttle was convenient, fast and the drivers were nice. The location was a little bit further from the airport, but it wasn't a problem.

The car was great. Easily carried our group of 6 adults. Plenty of milage was included. Peter was very accommodating. Would use his cars again.

It was the first time we rented via Turo, so I don't have a good base reference to compare in general, and can only compare to car rental experiences with commercial fleets (like Budget or Enterprise). In general it was okay -- we made it to where we were going and back, with no major issues. It's doable. However, there were some "surprises" where things didn't quite got as we expected: * We made rental reservation with expectation that we're picking up at the airport. When we got there, it turned out that the car is not at the airport, and the address given to us turned out to be what seemed to be Portland's airport Fire Rescue Tower (where, obviously, we can't even walk to or be at). We called the owner, and turned out that the car is at some house that's "not far" from the airport, and gave us new address. So additional expense of taking Uber/Lyft to get to the car (and apparently that address exists in two neighboring towns, and somehow Uber/Lyft took us first to the wrong one, so we had to take another ride, but that's not a Turo issue, just more expense as a consequence of car not being at the airport as promised). * When we got there, we called the owner to get the keys: "-- Keys are under front door's floormat. -- Nope, they're not there. -- Then try mailbox? -- Yes, they're there." The owner wasn't there, which is okay to do this all remote, but would be nicer if owner was in general "on top of things" such as where the car is and where it is expected to be picked up, where exactly are its keys, etc. * Then owner requested that prior to return we take the car to be washed and cleaned inside and out. We neither planned on looking for car detailing places in Portland, nor for time that it would take away from sightseeing, nor for extra substantial expense it would be. We pushed back and the owner backed off saying that he'll let it go due to confusion with pickup location (and apparently he didn't send some email that he was supposed to send, or something along those lines). * And while the car wasn't too dirty, it wasn't clean to begin with (which made detailing request that more amusingly odd). Crumbs on floor and seats and luggage compartment. Worst part was that windshield was dirty on the inside that was minor unpleasant at daytime, but as driving progressed into night time, it was quite significant as it was blurring lights and affected visibility substantially. * We also added additional driver thru Turo and let the owner know. The owner requested that we send him picture of drivers license directly to him. We refused (as it didn't seem right, given that Turo is the one that manages that aspect) and he backed off. * Of course, additional expense of Uber/Lyft after return drop-off as we weren't dropping it off at the airport as originally planned. So all in all we probably spent additional $50-60 in Uber/Lyft for getting to and from cars location instead of it being in the airport, and lost about 3+ hours for dealing with additional unplanned travel. The rest was okay. Car drove fine and didn't give any problems.
