Pros: On February 27, 2017, I made a reservation to rent a Thrifty rental car through Kayak. The rental was to commence with my picking up the vehicle on March 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Thrifty facility at the Palm Beach International Airport (PBI). The rental was scheduled to end with my dropping off the vehicle at the same facility on March 10, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. The price was $22.18 or less per day, all taxes and surcharges included. The total for the four days was supposed to be $87.88. My Kayak Confirmation No. was H22530715B2. When I went to the airport on March 10, 2017, my plans changed in that I needed to extend my stay in Florida by one day, until March 11, 2017. When I arrived at the Thrifty facility at PBI, I informed the agent on the electronic kiosk that I was going to stay an extra day or part thereof. The Thrifty Agent’s name was Lori. She was located in Oklahoma City. When I told Lori I wanted to extend the rental for a day, she told me that the rate would change from the daily rate that I had booked to a weekly rate, which would result in a charge of approximately $170.00. I asked why one additional day would result in an increase of about $90.00 when the daily rate was $22.18. Lori told me it was because the daily rate would not apply if the rental was five days or longer and that the charge would be computed on the weekly rate. I asked Lori what would happen if I simply returned the car a day late, on March 11. That is, would I be charged for an additional day at $22.18 or would I be charged the additional $90.00? Lori said that it was possible that I would be charged an additional $22.18 at the daily rate but it was likely that I would be charged $170.00 based on the weekly rate. I decided to take my chances. My rental started at 1:45 p.m. on March 6, 2017. It was supposed to end at 12:00 p.m. on March 11, 2017 I returned to the Thrifty facility at PBI on March 11, 2017 at 8:09 a.m. During my rental, I had driven 171 miles. I rented the vehicle with a full tank of gas and returned it in the same condition. There were no damages to the vehicle. The attendant checked the mileage, calculated my charges and provided me a slip. The charges totaled $271.20. In other words, it cost me $183.32 because I was twenty hours and nine minutes late; less than one day. For what should have cost $22.18, based on the daily rate, I was charged over eight times that amount. After receiving the slip from the attendant, I immediately went into the Thrifty office and complained about the charges. I told the agent about the kiosk conversation with Agent Lori and asked why the charges had gone from the $170.00 that Lori told me I would probably be charged to $271.20. I did not receive any explanation other than that’s what the charges were. I left the facility and took the Thrifty shuttle to the airport (thank you for that). I am disputing the charges.

    Bait and switch
Cons: We came away paying more than twice what we were Quoted. The agent was very high pressure and talked us into an upgrade because the car we chose originally would not be good enough for us to drive any distances. Then we had to have the Sunpass gizmo in advance and it went on. There were way too many hidden extras that made this a very expensive deal.
