Stressful+Poor service = Not renting from Payless
Pros: Car was clean -- so good.
Guys not at the counter are great -- the ones giving you your keys and are there when you drop off the car.
Cons: Employee at counter will try to sell you all kinds of insurance -- know your stuff before going in.
They will actively manipulate you with negative statements about your insurance.
They will not use price points but continually try to upgrade you or sell you things you don't need.
It was NOT an easy pick up.

No cars, no service
Cons: They didn't have any cars and were basically trying to hide that information from all of us. Eventually they walked me over to the Thrifty counter and implied that they would give me a car at the same rate. Hot that did not happen. Extremely unprofessional and so frustrating.

Easy in Seattle
Pros: They had the car I reserved despite my arriving late in the day. A big plus in my book! All the other budget car rental places I have used in the past have not had what I requested and "upgraded" me to a mini van (not an upgrade in my opinion) or I could pay more for a mid-size vehicle. The whole process with Payless was easy and quick with friendly service. The car was clean and ran well. I'll use them again. Helpful hint when renting in Seattle.....ask about Toll Fees!

Tried to cheat me
Cons: The man at the counter there tried 3 times to get me to pay a much higher price than the online reservation I had. Finally after waiting around and letting him wait on other customers he honored the online price.

Terrible service - try to force you to upgrade if
Cons: The customer service is terrible. Flight was an hour late, and therefore I got to them late. Told me it is my fault for being late, and that he couldnt honor my car since none is available, and I'd have to pay to upgrade.
Pros: We booked a 2 day rental through kayak. Nowhere on the kayak website (or hertz website for this matter) it said that the driver name and name on credit card used for paying must be the same.
When we arrived to the hertz counter they refused to give us a car or change the reservation (even though hertz customer service said they could) and told us we had to open a new reservation.
We were in a hurry to get to a time sensitive reservation so we went through with it.
All of a sudden our 133$ original order bulged up to 315$!!!!
And they schemed us to get insurance telling us the renters insurance we got from Allianz will not cover the new reservation (total and complete lie, but we were in a hurry and they took advantage) and also implied that the insurance is mandatory.
When we returned the car we confronted the manager (rude one named theresa) and she said that all conversations are recorded and she will check if it's the case.
Less then 3 minutes later she came back (no way on earth she located and listened to the conversation) and told us that we have been explained and that we are done for (so we wont be able to rent a car from hertz again-like we ever gonna...)
Do yoeself a favor and STAY AWAY.
Cons: The manager theresa, and the way she and her associat schemed us.

Hard sales pitch ineffective
Cons: Hard sales pitch for insurance, gas unnecessary and left a poor impression. Unaccounted for taxes increased final price dramatically. Could have been communicated better from the beginning.

Upcharged on pickup
Pros: Car was fantastic. I could select the car of my choice from the category I rented, and picked a Mazda 3. It drove great, got 40+ mpg, and was overall quite pleasant.
Cons: The counter only gave me options that included insurance. I selected what I thought was a basic rental, but was instead the basic insurance. It's my own fault, but I hate when business don't even present you with the cheap option and make you ask for it. I was tired and didn't think it through. Sales tactics like that tripled my expenses, and ensured I will never rent from Hertz again. They've permanently lost me as a customer.

Cons: Attempted up sell was not expected. Already checked my options prior to reserving.
Pros: Very friendly staff. Rapid service. Pick up and drop off worked very nice.

Pros: When we had a flat tire, they answered the phone immediately and were very helpful. They offered assistance in changing the tire ( but we did that ourselves). Then arranged for us to pick up another car from Hertz.
Cons: We don't rent cars very often. So thought we had the extra insurance taken care of by another company. However the person at the counter insisted that it didn't covere the cost of the car being out of service. It always seems like extortion. Pay twice what you expect or ruin your vacation with worry. Also the extra charge for a 2nd driver was unexpected.

Friendly staff. The third time I've rented from them.
Cons: The cars are a year or two old and have over 10,000 miles on them, but they look and run like new. No issues.

Easy, convenient, inexpensive
Pros: The price is inexpensive, good for people who just need a car no mater what brand or make it is. And surprisingly I got a new car just have run for 500 miles so I feel fresh and new.

Very efficient pick up and drop off
Pros: The agent didn't give me the typical upsell for each and every optional coverage. I simply indicated that I'd like to decline the optional coverages and that was that. Also, picking up the car was very quick.

Cons: We did not expect to have to take a cab from the airport to pick up our rental car! We also did not expect to have to return the car to the same location requiring another cab to get us back to the airport! Our reservations were made through Kayak to pick up the rental car at the airport so we were very angry when they did not have a car for us.
