Be aware that you have to drive on the left side of the road. Also, roads are very hilly and winding.
Verified travelerDec 2025
Stay in a small car as the roads are very narrow and be sure to take picks of car before you drive off.
MichaelNov 2025
There are many steep hills in St Thomas so a vehicle that gives visibility over the hood helps a lot. I recommend the supplemental insurance
Verified travelerMay 2025
If you are new to the Island, driving is on the left side and most of the rural roads are curvey and hilly; exciting in a way for sighting seeing. Smaller cars would be best if size is not a criteria.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Make sure you lease a car that has a higher clearance due to the sharp steep turns on some of the hills and the many potholes throughout the island. Lots of Jeeps and SUV's to choose from. Be aware before you go that they drive on the left side of the road and many of the roads through the hills are narrow.
Verified travelerMay 2024
I would suggest not getting a large car to get around on St Thomas. The roads are narrow! The parking spots are small.
Verified travelerApr 2024
I’d go with a small 4X4 vehicle. Especially if you plan on exploring the islands. Smaller helps with parking.
EricaApr 2024
I suggest getting insurance due to the roads and sharp turns. Thrifty was cost effective so that was great.
Verified travelerApr 2024
If you choose dollar/Thrifty rent a car, make sure to get a rental that’s in good shape. Cover yourself with pics. and videos of the car prior to leaving and when you return do the same thing. Hopefully this was a one time car that nobody else has to deal with
Verified travelerMar 2024
Be careful who you rent through. Avis and Budget are on-site as the others are offsite and it's a nightmare otherwise. Definitely know where or how to buy gas on the return because the islands stations aren't pay at the pump and some QR codes that are on the pumps take you to a junk website. Do research on any agency at the islands because we learned there are some dishonest islanders feeding off tourists whether they are hired employees for a well known agency or not.
Verified travelerJan 2024
i love it; just say in the left; keep saying left, left, left; and certainly do not speed
Verified travelerFeb 2024

Don’t rent at the airport. Use a no-name like 360 car rental
JimmyJul 2023
Follow the rules of the road, people friendly not aggressive drivers
Verified travelerJun 2023
It’s a bit of an adjustment but it’s nothing you can’t handle.
Verified travelerAug 2023
It was fine. No problem

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Saint Thomas Island
As a visitor to Saint Thomas Island, there’s so much to see with the advantage of a car. When you rent a car on this Caribbean island, it makes sightseeing and beach hopping a lot easier, rather than using the limited public transport. From ancient castles to historic forts, renting a car gives you the absolute freedom to discover every part of Saint Thomas Island.
Looking to rent a car on your trip to Saint Thomas Island? If you are landing at Cyril E. King International Airport, you will find a single Terminal split into two floors. The car rental counters are located inside the airport terminal in the baggage claim area, on the second floor.

Being mainly a tourist island, Saint Thomas Island doesn’t get affected by major rush hours like on the mainland. In the city center of Charlotte Amalie, you can expect to face rush hour traffic from 7:00 am until 9:00 am. Consider settling for an SUV or a Compact SUV. These are ideal vehicles for the terrain because of their higher ground clearance. The mountainous and rough roads require larger vehicles to reach some of the roughest destinations, such as mountain tops and beaches. Budget, Thrifty, and Avis, among other car rental companies, have these cars ready for you.
When driving your rental car on Saint Thomas Island, think about observing the laws in place. Several laws should be adhered to avoid being in trouble with the police. Everyone was friendly. But the car was super dirty on the outside and there is a mandatory purchase of insurance on St. Thomas I was unaware of. The car itself was great.

I purchased the additional insurance through your web site only to find out it wasn't very good in the USVI. I had to purchase an addition policy through Budget before they would give me the car. Overall kind of disappointing with your insurance option.
Horrible experience. I picked car up to a car with no brakes , filthy and no charger installed. I asked to replace car and was told I’m the one who picked an economy car. Rude! Then replaced car had faulty engine and brakes problems but I kept it since it as a hassle for them to replace. Car was also filthy. When I returned the car they told me I had to go vacuum the car from sand that had no foot mat. Rep stated on the paperwork it was 3 mats and was a lie. Only 2 back mats came with car. Only reason I didn’t score it poor is because I survived this death trap!

Full-size
Rental agents very pushy with all the extras that some renters don’t need or desire. I purchased full coverage collision through Kayak for half of what dollar charges, and agents got rude and I was told that with my full coverage damage and collision coverage that I still needed theirs. Finally got them to decline their full coverage and got out of there. They still added pre paid gas charge, which I didn’t need cuz I alway fill the tank when I return rentals. Also this car was dented, scratched, missing hub cap, damage from prior rentals. I took pics., videos, and logged down all damage prior to leaving. In the states, this rental would have been on he auction block last year. Not happy at all with this experience. Will choose another place next time.

Pros:
They didn’t have the car agreed upon available and tried to charge me more for a smaller compact car.
the vehicle was falling apart! trim piece on the front was loose, I was afraid that it would fall off. Remote key fob did not work and they did not have a second key Fob. They dont open early and you cannot drop off vehicle early. We have to be at the airport &:00 Am on a Monday but they dont open until 8:00 so we have to drop off the vejhicle Sunday and took a taxi from our hotel to the airport. will not recommend or use them again

Pros:
Staff were helpful and relatively friendly.
Cons:
There were lots small roaches in the car and they didn’t have any other cars to move us into. They gave us a 7% discount to compensate, which seemed pretty measly given the unsanitary aspect of having to see and know that roaches were crawling around our stuff and possibly on us too. It was a Kia Soul which also didn’t have enough power for the steeper hills and would bottom out going over speed bumps, so for a compact SUV, it really wasn’t a suitable auto for the Virgin Islands. The shuttle driver was friendly and helpful w/ loading and unloading our bags and they were efficient w/ check in and check out. I’ve rented from Economy many times in many locations and this was my first not great experience.

Pros:
Staff was ok, it is really way below average. the first car we got, the handle/armrest on the driver side came off the door. The replacement car was even worse, has 77,000 + miles. We were not aware that there will be no road service when we took the car over to St John. We were pretty much on our own if it break down. Perhaps it was in the fine print when I reserved the car, but I do not recall seeing that.
Cons:
Upfront on all these conditions to take care to St John from St Thomas. The rental agency is not very inviting and off site from airport. There is a shuttle, which is ok
