Pros:When I needed to exchange my vehicle due to a minor mechanical issue, it was fast and simple.Cons:When I arrived to pick up my vehicle there was no one in sight. When I finally found someone there was no greeting of any kind. But the agent was very rude handed me the keys and she walked out to continue her smoking, but did not direct me to the location of the vehicle. I had to read the signs to findout where their vehicles were parked and started walking down the aisle and hitting the alarm button to see which van would beep. And viola I found my rental. Horrible service when I picked up my rental but the agent I worked with when exchanging my vehicle was excellent.Reviewed Jan 19 2021

Cons:We arrived early for our reservation and were told that the car we had reserved was not available - fine. We were asked whether it would be ok to substitute a different vehicle - also fine. Then informed that there would be an upcharge of $25 per day - not so fine, and not mentioned until after we accepted the new vehicle. Have had innumerable experiences at rental car places where vehicles were substituted at no additional fee due to availability. The employee was impolite and completely unwilling to work with us. Battery deadCons:Original car, battery died I tried to call for help 5 times before talking to anyone, then after 4 more calls when I could talk to someone not to mention 8 calls I didn't get anyone and 2 1/2 hours after I talked to first person they finally got me a new car/help. I was 5 miles from the rental location. It was like I was out in the middle of no where. I missed one meeting and was late to a second so I was a bit frustrated and angry at this point. I asked the guy if they would give me credit etc he said talk to desk when I return car ....I was given "oh well sorry" at return time no discount and worse yet zero sympathy or remorse. I will not use Payless again, by time I paid their required extra insurance I could have gotten a better car at 2 other choicesReviewed Sep 4 2016

Cons:The agent at the counter lied to us and told us the insurance was required in California. Then when I questioned him bc the screen I had to initial said it was optional, he moved me to the next screen on his own so I could not read it anymore. He then tried to back track and say the conversation was recorded so I needed to confirm that I understood what he meant. The first rental we got was old, not comparable to the car promised to us at booking and the alarm went off every time we opened the car door. We had to go back and return the vehicle for a different one. Never again will I rent from them.Reviewed Jan 3 2021

Pros:Went to pick up my rental and they asked where I would be traveling and I told them we were trying to go on a road trip. The agent explained that even though it stated unlimited mileage on the confirmation they have fine print that we receive in our confirmation that states that mileage can be charged be particular locations. I stated that the fine print did not show up until after I paid for the car. He stated “yes, we do that”. I ended leaving without the rental. Also as I was on the phone with my partner about the situation, the agent kept trying to talk over me to my partner whom I was on the phone with, which I felt was very unprofessional, but also very uncomfortable.Reviewed Apr 19 2020

I will not be renting from payless againCons:At pick up the guy who was processing our pickup added additional coverage & insurance to my deposit. He claimed we had to because we were from another state. I visit San Diego a lot and rented cars before and never heard of this rule besides the fact that I already purchased coverage from Aliance and had my insurance on me. I called customer service after I left and they corrected my contract which I'm thankful for but didn't not appreciate the dishonest and unprofessional behavior from their employee.Reviewed Oct 28 2016

Payless Car RentalCons:Our bill ended up being $400 more than was quoted online... which was even more than Hertz was going to be! When we were given our rental car it was in poor condition - missing the passenger door side mirror cover! The rental company arranged for an exchange the next day at 8am, but never contacted me, so i had to call only to receive attitude and questioning. Then the exchange vehicle arrived and the man was rude to me. Not happy with this experience and will never use this rental car company EVER again.Reviewed Aug 30 2016

Pros:the counter staff was NOT friendly. I did not know I needed to have my insurance cards in hand and the staff person was extremely unpleasant about waiting while I dug through the internet to find my cards and contract electronically. I wish I had known this ahead of time. I have never had to present insurance cards at the counter with other carriers. Also, there was a mentally ill person outside the building and the staff person left me standing at the counter while several people, from other companies as well, went to check on the incident outside the building.Cons:A little kindness goes a long way.Reviewed Jul 19 2020

Pros:The car was fine, drop off was easyCons:The staff at pick up was rude and need customer service training. My flight landed late and the pick up office was closed (there was no mention of closing times when I booked rental). I had to rent from another company for one day (extra $ out of pocket) and come back the next day to pick up the car for the remainder of my 2 day rental. The associate told me he couldn’t reopen and that he’d create a new reservation for another $50. I got upset and told him that I wanted the car that I already paid for for the one additional day and that I refused to pay anything additional, since I had already paid for two days. He became defensive and rude and eventually opened up my original reservation and gave me the car I already paid for. Why couldn’t he do that from the start? Why did it have to escalate and have to exchange words? I’ve rented from other places and they will help you find solutions rather than trying to get more money out of you. There was no customer service etiquette or empathy for the situation, but was met with defensive remarks and anger for telling him that I wouldn’t pay more money for a reservation I already had due to them closing before my plane got in.Reviewed Jan 22 2021

felt ripped offPros:unlimited mileage, the people were friendlyCons:I had asked for a "premium" car and was supposed to get a Jeep Cherokee or equivalent. First, they tried to give us a Kia Soul, I HATE that car, so that was a no. Then they tried to give us a Ford Edge, which would have been ok, but they were going to charge $15/day extra, no way! We finally settled on a Nissan Rogue, which ended up being a piece of junk. Pulled to the right, hard, when driving, missing rear wiper blade and rode very rough. I don't know how they think a Nissan Rogue is equivalent to a Jeep Cherokee, but I have to admit feeling ripped off. We will not rent through Payless again.Reviewed Mar 20 2017

Pros:The price. The return was smooth.Cons:The sales pitch to upgrade gets old. If I wanted a convertible or corvette, I would have booked it. Also, the pitch to add more insurance also gets old. I told the guy that I have extra insurance through American Express, the normal car rental coverage by American Express, and my own insurance. I get tired of listening to it. The car was not clean, inside windows had not been cleaned, so, I pulled over and wiped the front windshield to reduce the glare. The glove compartment was jammed and unuseable.Reviewed Jul 11 2020
