FAQs - booking Michigan flights

  • Which airport should I fly into to go to the University of Michigan?

Although Willow Run Airport (YIP) is just 10 mi from the university, it’s not served by commercial flights. The best option is to fly into Detroit Metro Airport. The university is about 20m by car from the airport and less than 1h away by bus. SMART bus routes 261 and 200 connect the airport to the university.

  • I’m visiting Holland. Which airport should I fly into?

The closest airport to Holland is the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) (30m drive). Nonstop flights from dozens of other American cities are operated by Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, and United. The easiest way to travel from the Grand Rapids airport (GRR) to Holland is by car. You can rent a car on the first floor of the airport garage using Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, or National.

  • What airport is closest to Mackinac Island?

The two airports closest to Mackinac Island are the Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City and the Pellston Regional Airport (PLN), but neither one of these airports is served by commercial flights. Passengers wanting to travel to Mackinac Island will have to fly into Detroit Metro Airport and then drive to Mackinaw City (close to 300 mi). There are regular connections by ferry from Mackinaw City to the island (15m).

  • I'm traveling to South Haven. Which airport do I fly into?

The closest airport with nonstop flights is the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, a 1h 15m drive from South Haven. On the other hand, if you’d rather have a shorter drive to your final destination, you can fly into Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), 55m away. Keep in mind that this airport is served only by American Airlines, Delta, and United, and that all flights require a layover in a larger airport.

  • How long is the flight to Michigan?

An average nonstop flight from the United States to Michigan takes 2h 52m, covering a distance of 980 miles. The most popular route is Dallas - Chicago with an average flight time of 2h 20m.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Michigan?

Based on KAYAK flight searches, the most popular destination is Chicago (92% of total searches to Michigan). The next most popular destinations are Grand Rapids (3%) and South Bend (1%). Searches for flights to Traverse City (1%), to Flint (0.8%) and to Lansing (0.6%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Michigan

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Michigan flight deals.
  • Passengers who want to land at a central location when looking for flights to Michigan should select Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). A hub for Delta, this airport connects the city of Detroit to dozens of other American cities.
  • The other two major airports you can travel to in Michigan are the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) in Grand Rapids and Bishop International Airport (FNT) in Flint. Although they are both considered international airports, FNT has fewer flight options and is served only by four airlines. Those airlines are Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, and United.
  • The top destinations to visit in Michigan are not near the state’s major airports. The state law requires that children under 8 years old must sit in a car seat or a booster seat. Before booking your flight to Michigan, make sure that your car rental company provides you with the correct seat, in case you can’t travel with your own.
  • If you’re looking for the major airport in Michigan with the best public transportation options, then none beats the Detroit Metro Airport. This airport is served by SMART bus routes 125, 280, and 261.
  • For passengers traveling with pets, keep in mind that only the Detroit Metro Airport and the Gerald R. Ford International Airport have pet relief areas.

Just don't fly spirit. Better to pay a little extra for Delta, united, southwest or american for the increased customer service reliability.

I wish you had movies like delta. Especially on long flights. On my flight to Seattle I didn’t pay more for row 15. On the fight back when the 3 rows were empty I asked if I could sit there. I was told these are more expensive. Wouldn’t it be better to make the customers more comfortable, than leave empty seats ?

Coach seating is debilitating, neither my husband or I can walk the following day

Coach seating is debilitating, neither my husband or I can walk the following day

Extremely dosappoontined and frustrated. Refused entry to lounge in Detroit despite having Delta AMEX Reserve linked in MyDelta phone app as revommended and also having proof of account. No pillows were available for overnight flight to AMS and breakfast was not served in Delta Comfort.

I liked the screens in the seat headrest with movies to watch. I didn’t like being forced to check my carryon bag and being told there wasn’t room for my bag - when there were 5 bins sitting empty on takeoff. I didn’t like the “I don’t give a fig” attitude of the flight attendants and the delta gate attendants when I asked why they decided to put me out. They gave me a 1800 number to call but I can’t get a live person on the phone. Customer service is non existent. My business must not be that important to them.

The airplanes were so old and out-dated it was terrifying to fly on them.

Like all flights, the seats are small and not comfortable. My first leg was delayed but delta rebooked 2nd leg so my arrival at final destination was only 2 hours later than original flight.

Love delta but the delays and long waits for updates was just too much this time.

Flight was 3 hours late so only had an OK experience

Boarding was somewhat chaotic. Unable to evaluate crew or food/drink because captain kept them seated due to turbulence. Have no idea if entertainment was offered.

Worst flight in my life. Only was scheduled for a 45 min flight to get our connection flight. It was late by 40 minutes and we missed our connection. Delta was totally useless trying to help and unable to get my family on the next flight because they overbooked it Thus had to get a hotel at my expense and lost a day at Disney as a result. Cost me about a $1000 if you add 2 hotels meals shuttles etc to get thru the day Awful customer service by Delta in Detroit totally useless people

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Smooth boarding and friendly crew. Unfortunately as soon as we boarded the unit that provides air circulation failed. The pilot informed us and requested maintenance technicians to check it out. The plane became uncomfortably warm without any fresh air coming in. Plus the repair delayed our departure. I am glad the maintenance crew were able to fix the problem. I also was without use of my tv monitor for the first 1/3rd of the trip.

Communication with the customer and stay is important. Staff off with a minor inconvenience but it worked out of course. Also this was a very old Mint Class plane. They snuck this one in on us. The updated aircraft are much better.

The flight itself was fine, but the boarding process was extremely frustrating. There is no one scanning boarding passes - passengers just scan themselves and enter the jetway. By the time my husband and I got on the plane and were halfway to our seats they determined there were too many bags on the plane and everything at that point needed to be checked. This created a lot of unnecessary chaos. They should have alerted people before getting on the plane that they would need to start checking bags instead of waiting until people were already on the plane.

The best flight I’ve had in a while. The plane was like 25% capacity, if that. Smoothest boarding and deplaning process I’ve ever experienced. Wish all flights were this smooth.

Did not enjoy this flight at all. All of my coworkers flew delta and I chose JetBlue because I really value how simple the WiFi and entertainment is and this flight I didn’t get either. Crew staff was unsympathetic to my system not working, everyone I asked for help with was extremely bothered by my request for help.

Little snafu at boarding. Staff communicated with gate poorly. Flight attendant was rude making disembark early. This was an older mint class. Needs an overhaul for sure. Food was good. The male flight attendant was really nice.

My encounter with the entertainment services provided on board was moderate; the functionality of the Wi-Fi connection was either sluggish or nonoperational, while the display screens were antiquated and suffered from poor visibility. On the positive side, the cabin exuded a sense of expansiveness, and the crew exhibited amiable and accommodating behavior throughout the journey.

Everything was great except for some reason crew and ground crew could not figure out how to deal with an electric wheelchair and it delayed us 20-30mins. Was pretty frustrating for passengers and the captain.

Like the space, did not like the snack options, there was no power outlet in seats, no entertainment, no flyfi.

Traveling with JetBlue from NYC was convenient as accessing JFK airport was straightforward via the LIRR to the AirTrain. Maneuvering through the terminal was hassle-free, which was a pleasant start to the journey. However, the flight experience itself left much to be desired. The seating arrangement was notably uncomfortable; despite securing a window seat, space felt cramped. This was exacerbated by the middle seat passenger encroaching on my area, which made the flight less enjoyable. Additionally, while the in-flight entertainment system initially seemed like a reprieve, the sound outlet on my seat was inoperable. This issue turned what could have been a manageable three-hour flight into a rather tedious ordeal, as I was unable to use the entertainment system effectively. While JetBlue provided a smooth process in terms of airport logistics, the on-board experience highlighted areas in need of improvement, particularly in terms of comfort and entertainment system maintenance.

This was a 5 hour flight with no entertainment and with a snack being provided (pretzels and fruit bar), which are both high in carbs and sugar. Nuts would have been a better choice.

Late out of the gate, late to takeoff. No screens on plane. Uncomfortable window seat.

The plane was so gross and dirty. Literally saw dust layering and flowing out the grey vents. Dust was all over the air vent knobs to the point where I took my sani wipe and cleaned them down so at least it wasn't blowing my my face. Also, I upgraded and paid for Wifi and it's always so spotty. I get we are in the air, but don't charge for it if it's not going to work. I expect so much more from United. They really are giving up.

Liked that we left on time for each flight. Snacks not the best, but we're okay.

Never nice, United Express partners always do an amazing job.

It was fine. The flight attendant appeared to be in a bad mood but everything was fine.

A three (3) hour flight should have meal service in First Class, not just potato chips!

The entertainment would not work. The comfort of the seats leaves something to be desired, pretty uncomfortable.

Pleasant service from the crew. Arrived early. Efficient boarding and deplaning. Great job!

Was realllly smooth. It was delayed but we were well informed.

No explanation of why there was no snack and drink service (unless requested) when there was service in the other direction.

It was exactly what I expected, actually arriving sooner than scheduled.

One of the reasons I fly American is because the seating is more comfortable than most airlines. Even in the back of the plane.

Everything was ok except that we had to de-ice the plane which took about 20 mins. I realize this is a safety issue, but it caused us to miss a connection in Charlotte by 15 mins which meant a four hour layover. I think the thing that bothered me was American Airlines knew we were only 15 mins late, so couldn’t they have waited for us? There were about 10 of us that had to take alternate planes. I remember recently waiting 15 to 20 mins for passengers connecting with flights we were on. Just wondering why they couldn’t do the same for ours.

3hour delay In the last 3 months i had 3 flights and 2 of these had a more than 2:40 hrs delayed

Overall boarding and debarking is a joke. I dont even bring luggage anymore on trips because you can never allow them to be place then in the overhead bin or you have to pay or you check them which is even worse having to wait for your luggage on the tarmac.

RE Food: Wish there was a choice for No Rating. Flew from Honolulu to Los Angeles on a Red-Eye flight (11:00 pm to 7:30 am). Other than a package of cookies with a beverage choice offered soon after take-off, and a beverage choice shortly before landing, no other food choices were offered. Everyone slept or rested for most of the trip. Nothing to rate. RE Entertainment: Everyone was sleeping most of the flight. Only saw one passenger watch about 30 minutes of entertainment on his iPad. I never attempted to access any entertainment options.

The boarding process was incredibly slow, as was deplaning. They started beverage service and there was an extremely small amount of turbulence, so they discontinued it. They said they’d resume if possible, but even thought the rest of the flight was perfectly smooth, they didn’t bother. Getting our checked bags took longer than I’ve ever waited and they couldn’t even tell us which carousel they were coming out on, so everyone was running back and forth for 30 minutes.

American switched my flight to a 5 hour layover then cancelled my whole reservation with no notice and refused refund. Won’t fly with them again.

Had to wait a long time for wheelchair in Dallas

The crew was ghetto lol I felt like I was on an inner city field trip

Horrible! The short distance flight ended up taking 5 hrs! There was a 3 hr delay for the flight to take off and there was a 70 min wait on the tarmac for some bogus reason that the pilot said the gate he was supposed to board was taken up. After a 30 min wait he said the plane that was supposed to push out of the gate called a medical emergency and 40 min later he ended up boarding another gate. For the initial 3 hr delay there was no information/alert about the gate or delay in the app or the boards up until the boarding time and even beyond! Had to walk all the way to the end of the terminal to find the frontier staff to ask what was going on. Avoid this airline at all costs! If you have carryon bags or checked bags , their prices come equivalent to the prices of more reliable airlines. They are the worst in timeliness at 60% (reported as delayed) this year (check the data) by a high margin even compared to the second worst airline. If you are ok with having a miserable flight experience with the odds close to flip of a coin, feel free to try them. If you value your time , money and flying experience, stay away.

There was nothing to like, flight delayed had to move to different departure areas, disorganized to say the leasr

Delayed for two hours due to trivial issues. No reimbursment. Also on arrival further delay due to terminal malfunction.

Our flight was canceled for no known reason. We weren’t told until we were checking in at 5:00 am. This was after our last flight with Frontier where we sat on the plane for three hours (not an exaggeration) before we took off because of a mechanical issue. We won’t be flying Frontier again.

Allowed me to chose my seat without extra charge (I purchased full-price ticket) and boarding was in group1. Didn't even serve water.

I went to the Frontier counter in San Jose at 1030am or so on Sunday 10/13/24 to see if I could get an earlier flight to San Diego in lieu of my reserved 630pm flight. One thing led to another, and I was able to obtain an open seat for about $ 56. on the earlier flight. Fine. Then the agent asked if I "was checking a bag". Not knowing that carry-ons cost extra per Frontier policy, I thought that she meant a regular checked bag. Therefore, I said no. Once I got to the gate, the same gate agent who sold me a ticket told me that I had to pay $99 for a carry-on, and that all bags were extra on Frontier. Having never flown on Frontier, I was not aware of this. Part of the issue was that she was not a native English speaker, so there was a miscommunication as to what "bag" meant. I would have preferred for her to have clearly let me know at the front counter that any bag including a carry-on cost $99. It would have had the same outcome, as I had to take my carry-on. But it got hectic at the last minute at the gate itself. The baggage policy should have mentioned "including carry-ons" when we first spoke.

Canceled original flight and wasn't clear on rebooked flight. Had to pay for bags which was more than the flight itself. Normal help, drinks etc. you have to pay for. This is Not a low cost airline.

Most horrible airlines. Please avoid it. It's ok to spend $50 extra for delta, united or Alaska

There were a lot of issues every step of the process. Check in, security, boarding, and dealing with luggage. Plus the money you think you are saving you end up using in hidden fees.
