Agent at check in desk
Pros: Very kind and helpful young woman at the check in desk. The shuttle driver also very personable.

VW Bettle quite uncomfortable, Customer Service po
Pros: Got a good rate
Cons: Customer service was performed with disinterest and affected politeness. An additional $50 "sales tax" was applied when I picked up the car - there is no sales tax in Oregon! When I needed to call to reserve the car for a week longer, the price was over nearly twice the original price per week. Yet, when I returned the car two days earlier to, I still paid the full week price. Additionally, they had changed locations during the time of my rental , without notifying me of that change when I picked up the car. So, I drove up to an empty business with a note on the door, Very unprofessional and thoughtless.

Cons: Nothing bad with the service, but our flight was delayed. We had to change our reservation to a different company because Payless would have been closed before we landed.

Pros: There was no notification that the location for drop off was closed due to weather. We drove through very treacherous weather to find them closed and had to drive an additional 10 miles to the airport.

Great Value, Odd Location
Pros: Quality vehicles, sharing fleet with Budget and Avis. Why pay more?
Cons: The rather limited hours (7a-7p).are a bit of a drag. And it's 5 miles from the airport so expect a 10-15 min shuttle from the airport. It's a great deal if you live nearby!

A Bit Out of the Way, But OK
Pros: Straight-forward approach, willingness to accommodate, kept their word on price.
Cons: It took a while to get from the airport to the rental place. The cars seemed to have "just on the line" tread on their tires.

Had to switch to Avis(same company)
Pros: The car was okay.
Cons: Car was dirty inside when I first got it. Was at the airport at 6pm and waited for the shuttle to drive me to the off airport carlot Payless had. Called and they said a driver would be there shortly(They close at 7pm FYI). So 6:50 comes around and I call again, to be told that no more shuttles were actually coming(awesome!) so they tell me to go to Avis at the airport since it's the same company and they will honor my reservation prices. Weekend goes by and I return the cr with half a tank, I knew they charged a little extra for filling up but they hit me with $80 fee for half a tank!! It cost me $28 to fill up from E in Seattle which had higher gas prices. Thats almost 8x the price! I called to see if they can fix it they only said they go off local premium gas cost and charge an extra 10% fee. So I guess local premium gas is $8 per gallon and I was unaware.

Payless / Avis Connection
Pros: Car was good.
Cons: I (Ed Scovil) arrived just past the staffing hours at PDX on Wednesday evening,10/05/16. My information said that AVIS would be able to help me. I went to the AVIS counter, very nice lady, but she had to fill out all the paperwork manually. When I returned the car on Friday evening, I was given a slip of paper with the mileage and told to take to the AVIS desk in the parking structure. The AVIS representative said that they would be unable to process the return until the next day and I was told that I would receive an email confirmation the next morning. My rental contract was retained by AVIS. I have no documentation that I returned the car and I never received an email confirmation as promised. I left my work email. escovil@PeaceHealth.org Seems to be a very poor partnership between Payless and AVIS from an efficiency and customer service perspective. I filled the car with gas prior to returning and I still do not have confirmation of my car return and final invoice. An easy experience.
Pros: Making the reservation, picking up the car, and dropping it off were a breeze. Thanks for everything!

Pros: The shuttle driver was kind and friendly.
Cons: Pickup /dropoff was too far from airport and very inconvenient. Waiting for shuttle to and from airport was too long. Car insurance was higher than competitors. Was charge too much for being an hour late after drop off time. I don't think a customer's rental time should begin when customer's information is being taken. Rental time should begin after the customer has finished examining the car for dents and scratches. I will not rent from Payless/Portland again.

Cons: The wait for the shuttle to be transported to the office.

Pros: The rental service was incredible, our car was really fuel efficient and the car itself very spacious. The cost for a 4 day hire was much less than any other car rental at that time. I would definitely use payless again!

Checkout was a disaster
Cons: The offsite location in Portland is nowhere near the airport. It was at least a 15-minute ride to the Payless location. There was one van - not a shuttle - taking people to the location, so there was always a line of customers. When we arrived at the rental location, there was only one person checking out cars. It took me 45 minutes to get my car with five people in front of me. There were at least that many people behind me in line. The car I got was a Chevy Impala (supposedly an update). It was mediocre in driving. This is my last business with Payless since the experience was not worth the lower price.

Pros: Sales lady was cool.
Cons: But she was new give her a week and she will be as jaded as the pockmarked chick with straight hair that wouldn't even acknowledge me as i waited for 15 minutes at the desk to rent a car. $200 hold for credit. $350 for debit. An hour and a half to rent a car? Crazy. Shuttle took half an hour.

Horrible customer service
Pros: The rental was very nice and comfortable. It was also the cheapest rental by far.
Cons: The customer service is absolutely horrible. Upon drop off I realized there were charges that were not discussed when we picked up. The agent literally laughed in my face and said "oh well". Completely disrespectful. Will never go there again, no matter how great the deal may seem. Honesty and respect are worth more.

Added an extra airport tax
Cons: The total I paid was about 10 dollars more than what was shown on my reservation. They told me it was extra airport tax. I wish it was shown when I made the reservation so that I could compare the various offers correctly.

NOT at the Airport!
Pros: Only upside was that a rep let us make special arrangements to drop off at the airport for the return
Cons: Booked for pickup at PDX - when I booked and called was never told it wasn't located at airport. Had to take a 20+ minutes shuttle ride to the location where the directions we had were no longer good. Super hassle and no one there seemed phased by it.

Thumbs Up! Will rent again...
Pros: The personnel were friendly and knowledgeable. They were able to fit my travel needs very well.
Cons: The distance from the airport to pick up the rental.

Pros: Decent service despite internet being down at the Portland facility. Employees very slow to process paperwork. Lots of side conversation that slowed down the line. Free upgrade to SUV was nice.
Cons: Engine light on vehicle 30 minutes into drive.

Pros: Getting the car and dropping it off were among the cleanest experiences I have ever had. It took less than ten minutes for both processes.

Cons: The shuttle never showed up at the airport to pick us up. After 50 minutes wait time -- we went with another company! Would not go with this one again....

Cons: I don't like how the insurance sold on the website is different than the one offered by the rental company, so the customer is pressured into buying multiple policies to ensure proper coverage. I ended up spending hundreds more than my reservation claimed.
