Flights from Ontario to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from Ontario to the United States

If you’re flying through New York, LaGuardia Airport is night and day compared to many older airports. It’s clean, spacious, and has plenty of food and beverage options. I also found both drop-off and pick-up to be very easy and efficient, making the overall travel experience much smoother.
PatriciaFlew with United Airlines-Jun 2026
Newark airport is very efficient at giving information re where gates are and distance to walk. Beautiful restaurants and great food.
EireneFlew with United Airlines-May 2026
EWR has been renovated and is now much more pleasant and less confusing to get from gate to gate. Our afternoon YYZ-EWR is a shuttle between these cities so reliability is better. Many passengers use this to connect to onward flights to Europe so gates are arranged closer by. It’s a good itinerary to take.

Nashville airport things have changed so much the satellite terminal was so far off and the uber ground transportation was too far once we came out of the airport. I thought this was too chaotic
FolaFlew with Air Canada-Feb 2026
Police your luggage, ensure your bags are on board with you at every connection.
JenFlew with Porter Airlines-Jan 2026
Get there SUPER EARLY, lines are long, only a few people working. Be prepared to massively overpay for luggage.
TommyFlew with United Airlines-Nov 2025
Get to the gate early as they tend to board very quickly if you need over head bin space
KaseyFlew with Air Canada-Jun 2025
Come way early as US customs line up eats up your time
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Apr 2025
Keep an eye on your boarding gate and download the app. Boarding gates will change at the spur of the moment and the app makes things a lot easier and there is nice information on it.

Pick the airport closest to where you want to stay - choose LGA, JFK or Newark. Remember to account for traffic when choosing!
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2025
I wish I had anticipated the delay at the airport and scheduled my ride pickup for 1.5 hours after the estimated arrival time. I was unaware that passengers from Air Canada flights had to board a shuttle bus to access the aircraft.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Dec 2024
Get on a regional sized (smaller than Boeing 737 or Airbus A320) jet if you can, they are older and have more legroom than newer aircraft.
MarciaFlew with Air Canada-Dec 2024
Have you be at the airport early in order to avoid the rush and chaos.

Get to the airport early to realize a super relaxed experiences

Bring entertainment, and prepare food before coming to the airport.

Get the United app on your phone. It provides a lot of relevant information about your flight.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Oct 2024
Make sure you know which terminal to head to upon landing if transferring at Los Angeles as the information board at LAX will show only flight info for the terminal you are at (1 of 8). Transfer information is not transparent from the airline or the airport. Subscribe to airline apps help but can be cumbersome and difficult to manage in a time crunch.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Oct 2024
I wish we had know about the security check and customs. It was a long distance between gates. It all worked out fine though. I forgot to add that the overhead compartments were built poorly. At least for someone my height and head size.
BrianFlew with Air Canada-Oct 2024
Be prepared for a labyrinthine experience traversing the various levels and passages of the Toronto airport. Bring quality walking shoes, as it is likely well over a km in total walking time.
JoanFlew with Porter Airlines-Nov 2024
Maybe get the choice above the cheapest option because you don't get a checked bag or carry on so in the end you end up paying about the same, if not more.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Nov 2024
Don't forget about customs at the Toronto airport--it will take 45+ minutes with the lines unless you have a special status program!
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Nov 2024
Do not carry bigger the specified sized bags for cabin baggage. Only one carry on ba

Read fine print and ask question before finalizing on payments for upgrades
Verified travelerFlew with Delta-Jul 2024
Delta is great because when you land, you are already on the domestic side of the airport. Since I take the train/subway downtown, way cheaper than a taxi or Uber, I do not have to take a shuttle all the way around the airport to the subway: I just take a quick link train and walk a short distance. Easy and fast! Like travel should be.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Aug 2024
It is great to have a nonstop flight. Might be worth paying a bit extra for it.
F.Flew with United Airlines-Aug 2024
Make sure to check the airline delay flights rate and if you have important commitments choose another airline.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Aug 2024
Check the departure board carefully when you get to the airport.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Aug 2024
Treat this like you’re flying on a greyhound bus. Bring food. Bring a pillow. Bring entertainment. Know that you will be uncomfortable and the airline won’t care.
JoshuaFlew with Air Canada-Apr 2024
Toronto's customs was one of the faster experiences I've had. They opened four more lanes to expedite the process when the lane got too long, to ensure we would all get through within around 15 minutes. The public transportation within the city is also top notch, in my opinion.
WadeFlew with Air Canada-Mar 2024
Don't get discombobulated at security and leave anything behind. Knowing that they make you put all laptops, tablets and phones in their own bins through the x-ray machine may save you a trip to the lost & found.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Apr 2024
Be at the airport at least three hours in advance and have your meal before boarding. I am short so if a passenger hadn’t helped me, I would not have reached the overhead bin.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2024
Be sure to be aware of what the limits are for taking liquid or cream personal care items.
Verified travelerFlew with Korean Air-May 2024
As I have two connections international flight. Whether the check luggage goes to the final destination automatically, and how many free check luggages need to advice clearly while booking. Since the two code sharing air flight companies provided different information which was very confusion.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2024
Carry-on baggage sizing for United US bound flights appears to be much smaller than for Canadian flights, which forced me to check my bag at the last minute. So check online ahead of time

Do your check in online because it is much more convenient.
GaryFlew with Air New Zealand-Dec 2023
Get instructions on how to find your connecting flight terminal and gate in LAX. There are no information boards or information desks. We asked a lady in a gift shop, then it was a series of tunnels and stairs that were not well sign posted at all.

check which terminal the flight is departing from and landing in!
