Insights shared by verified travelers who flew to Tokyo

Immigration and customs upon arrival at NRT airport Tokyo took 1.5 hours - so drink water or bring a bottle for the humid long lines. Once through that, went very smooth. Took an Uber to downtown Tokyo hotel - since it was commute times, took 1.5 hours; but overall was a good experience at the end of a long travel day.

Make sure to download the QR code for easier, smooth arrival/ entry into Japan.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Sep 2026
Be sure to dress warm & have plenty of cushion on your bottom. The seat of the economy class is not that comfortable. If you can afford to upgrade, get better class.
Verified travelerFlew with Japan Airlines-Sep 2026

Empty your luggages when you go to Tokyo so you can enjoy shopping!
Verified travelerFlew with Singapore Airlines-Jun 2026
I bought an eSIM and didn’t work because my phone is already locked to one, perhaps another way to purchase a data plan to get cellular access in your destination.
SarahFlew with ANA-Apr 2026
Google Maps and Google translate are your friends! Also, make sure to have cash, most places do accept card, but in the big markets, more places will be cash only.
BeldanFlew with Japan Airlines-Mar 2026
make sure to file any medication permission for things like ADHD meds or opiates for pain management early, so you don't need to rush.
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-May 2026
Definitely double check that the plane is actually what you're expecting. If it says it's operated by a different airline, treat it as THAT airline, not the one selling tickets.
MamiFlew with Japan Airlines-May 2026
I did not find particularly good stuff in Entertainment (movies and TV), so you may want to bring what you like.
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-Apr 2026
be prepared for the long flight. wear comfortable clothes and shoes and be prepared for drastic changes in weather
CecilFlew with ANA-Dec 2025
We have been flying in and out of Haneda the last few trips. We decided to go to Narita this time. I'm glad we did. It was less crowded and relatively easy to navigate for us. We were able to catch a bus to the North to Tochigi prefecture without much trouble. If you are coming from another country, You must fill out the immigration forms beforehand. There is a table set aside for that. Immigrations goes quick. They do facial recognition and finger prints and stamp your passport. Then you get your bags. Fairly seamless.
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-Feb 2026
Check the "true" costs of a flight with the actual carrier versus the many add on charges of a discount fare and subpar performance. To see if the difference is worth the pain..
GFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Feb 2026
Bring your own tasty snacks because the provided food is average airplane food. Bring your own entertainment; download to your phone to watch something interesting.
JoannaFlew with ANA-Dec 2025
If you have a connecting ANA flight out of Haneda make sure it's not at a different terminal.
LeeFlew with ANA-Jan 2026
Make sure you understand the cost of additional baggage. This information was not make readily available. If I had known it was so high, I would have made sure to pack in a single checked bag. It seems this information was hidden from me.
MarkFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2025
For that long of a flight, spend the extra money for more leg room if you can afford it and don't waste you money or miles on United's wifi. Shout out to United's new check in/baggage procedure in Denver... It took a minute to navigate it but once I did... I wish all airlines would do similar.. it was fast and easy!!!
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-Mar 2025
Compression socks are your friend. I wish I bought some to help me deal with the cramped seating.
Verified travelerFlew with Singapore Airlines-Mar 2025
Stand up and move around at least every 2 hours
AhliaFlew with ANA-Apr 2025
Bring entertainment as well as it is a long flight
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-Jan 2025
Consider light carry-ons to give yourself stretch room for economy and quick onboarding and off boarding especially with connecting flights.
DavidFlew with United Airlines-Dec 2024
Do not take an aisle seat on Boeing aircraft. The carts are to wide for the aisles and so are many of the crew. You will be bumped by one or the other throughout the flight. Poorly designed aircraft.
TFlew with ZIPAIR-Nov 2024
Haneda is closer to the city center, so fly there if you can. Zipair has by far the best rates, but try to book early and pick a seat so you’re not stuck in a middle seat.
Verified travelerFlew with Japan Airlines-Oct 2024
If you are connecting to a domestic flight in Japan allow at least 2-3 hours between flights. Immigration at Haneda is very slow . They are now fingerprinting and photographing all international passengers. Doesn’t help if you used the Japan website for preclearance or not, same line either way.
Verified travelerFlew with Japan Airlines-Aug 2024
Make sure if you have any type of food allergies you let them know ahead of time instead of during your flight. The airline will do their best to accommodate your allergies and they take them very seriously. Economy wasn’t to bad on the way there I would recommend sitting in and exit row if you’re looking for leg room and it also helps to be close to the bathrooms.
HughFlew with Singapore Airlines-Jun 2024
Arrive early, have a small carry-on, maybe a large bottle of water.
LayFlew with ANA-May 2024
Reserve seats in advance. This is an air ticket worth paying for, even if the price is slightly higher. The standard is consistent. Do book your layover accommodation in advance. I booked upin arrival and only got a more expensive option. Otherwise, I enjoyed very much flying with ANA and will choose it again.
Verified travelerFlew with Japan Airlines-Apr 2024
Get your seat ahead of time especially for elderly. Who need to get in and out of the seat to stretch.
greggacadFlew with ANA-May 2024
check in online, get all your papers or documents in order, for faster processing.
RogerFlew with ANA-Feb 2024
The extra leg room and been able to recline better is worth the extra money. I bidding on the premium and offered the least they would accept and got it.
