FAQs - booking North Carolina flights

  • I’m traveling to Asheville. Which airport should I choose?

Although Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) has limited flight options, it’s still one of the most direct ways to reach Asheville (about 20m to the city center). It’s served by major US airlines Delta, American Airlines, and United, plus the low-cost carriers Allegiant and Spirit. The airport receives regular nonstop flights from American cities, including Denver, Dallas, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington DC. Alternatively, you can book a flight to Charlotte-Douglas airport and catch a connecting flight with American Airlines.

  • I’m visiting Old Salem. Which airport should I choose?

The Piedmont Triad International Airport is the closest to Old Salem, 25 mi away. It’s a less busy airport, but it also has fewer flight options. Although this airport is served by nonstop flights from over 15 American cities, there are fewer flight options compared to the major airports in North Carolina. On the other hand, you can book a flight to the Charlotte-Douglas airport, rent a car on site, and drive the 120 mi to the Biltmore Estate or to your accommodation in Asheville. You can also take a connecting flight from Charlotte to Asheville with American Airlines.

  • What’s the best airport for someone traveling from New York to Charlotte?

Passengers traveling from New York to Charlotte can fly directly into Charlotte-Douglas International Airport if they’re flying out of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or LaGuardia Airport (LGA). Passengers who prefer to fly out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) can book a flight to the Asheville Regional Airport and then take a connecting flight to CLT.

  • How long is the flight to North Carolina?

An average nonstop flight from the United States to North Carolina takes 2h 17m, covering a distance of 729 miles. The most popular route is Newark - Charlotte with an average flight time of 1h 51m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to North Carolina?

  • Which airlines fly to North Carolina?

American Airlines, Delta & British Airways fly the most frequently from the United States to North Carolina.

  • What are the most popular destinations in North Carolina?

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to North Carolina

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest North Carolina flight deals.
  • If you typically fly with American Airlines, search for flights to North Carolina that land at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT). This airport is the second largest hub in the United States for that airline.
  • If you’re not sure where to travel yet, look for flights to North Carolina to one of the other three major airports. Those airports are Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), and Wilmington International Airport (ILM).
  • Although the Raleigh-Durham International Airport has fewer flight options than the Charlotte-Douglas airport, it still services 68 direct routes to many US cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Miami.
  • Traveling with your pet to North Carolina won’t be a hassle, considering that all four major airports are equipped with pet relief areas.
  • Piedmont Triad International Airport and Wilmington International Airport are less crowded and are better options for traveling to North Carolina if you don’t have your mind set on a specific city. However, they also have fewer flight options, and most routes include a layover in another major airport nearby.

They put me on a chair in between two men, one overweight who was almost falling on top of me, and the other was even uncomfortable because I was half falling because of what the other was pushing me. I stayed with. my feet were swollen from fluid retention and from being unable to accommodate myself. it was very uncomfortable. I asked for help but they told me that the flight was full and they couldn't help me. I got off the plane almost unable to walk due to the inflammation. and then at FLL airport I asked for help because I couldn't go to my next flight, which was a connection.

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

Overall fine but both ways for this trip was delayed.

Flight was delayed by almost 5 hours. Suitcase was not loaded despite the flight being near empty (my colleagues’ suitcases did reach JFK, unlike mine). Had to argue on phone to get JetBlue to deliver the case to my hotel. Never again

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Great! I love Jet Blue. My favorite airline! Very efficient, clean and timely.

Run out of snack choices. Why are the seats not padded for your butt? Are we sitting on blocks of wood or metal for $250-300 a pop? This ain’t spirit. Let’s get it together people

We were told that our flight would be delayed for 90+ minutes because of weather, so we went to get something to eat only to have them randomly start boarding 15 minutes after the announcement, with no warning.

Entertainment... No earphones passed out. Many including me couldn't use the TV. Legroom was good. Crew was indifferent and a bit surly. Free wifi was a nice convenience. Check in desk location was unknown. Gate number on the boarding passes was wrong.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

Was 4 1/2 hours delayed. No food options, poor entertainment and cramped seats made worse by people in front reclining while we could not as in back row.

The baggage handlers broke the handle on my bag that they put under the plane that I checked on the jetway. They traded it out for a less quality bag in Tulsa. But, they said they would try to fix it. Bologna! There was no fixing that bag handle. Someone didn’t care how they treated the bag.

The entertainment wasn’t playing in the app or online.

It is a modern tragedy that any airline expects you to travel for 14 hours in such discomfort and that the only way to add comfort is exorbitant prices. I was in pain by the time we landed. Shameful.

Original plane sidelined. Had to wait an hour for replacement.

Crew was very cooperative and professional. Passenger's first checked in bag should be free.

No real agent onsite helping you for missing luggage there. Not like the other airline next to UA desk, they have staff attending in their desk assisting answer/helping luggage issue, even after midnight.

Horrible, the flights kept delaying, so it is obvious that we won't be able to make it to the next connection. No easier/real agent on site to help you figure this out. UA agent on other counters refuse to assist you and direct us to use the QR code/call customer service. So inefficient and poor. While technology seems convenient, but it's not the best interest/experience for customers need help while there is active issue need assistance.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Seats are weirdly bent, I felt hunched the entire time.

Paid for premium economy had no tv the whole time the crew tried to reset/reboot but would not work they said they would put a trouble ticket in for it. We had 3 seats my tv was the only one that didn't work. They cancelled our flight re worked us on another that left us at airport over night on the floor I have a ten year old and a 78 diabetic mother which also had shingles and suffers from nerve pain in legs and back. Requested wheelchair service at all airports after the re route NO wheelchair service was there to help. WORST experience we have ever had. Went to American airlines assistance it was closed. I AM FURIOUS!!! I expect some sort of compensation from this traumatic experience and no need for flying points we don't plan on using American airlines again!!!!

We had a 2 hour delay. The seats were smaller than most other airlines. The person in front of us wanted to lay back and we had to stop her because she was pressing against my girlfriend’s legs. We had to ask her to sit up and not lay back due to the lack of room.

Wretched scheduling - they got themselves into a critical crew situation and didn’t try to address it until 15 minutes before they had to cancel my flight

AA1537 the AC was not working properly. It was very hot and uncomfortable.

Liked - nothing. Disliked - delayed 35+ min sitting on the plane. Caused me to miss my connection in Charlotte. American Airlines is the worst US Air Carrier company with atrocious customer service.

Again, multiple delays and I eventually just canceled and drove!

WiFi connected but only let you go to the AA website, not even text messaging worked.

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

On the new 319 NEO? seatback entertainment system did not work even when the flight attendant rebooted it. At least I had my cell phone to connect with wifi.

I thought people that were clearly intoxicated were not allowed to board flights. But of course they let them and of course they sat directly behind us. Kicking seats being so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think. Cussing loudly telling a woman “she was going to punch her in the fucken face” for accidentally mixing her seat assignment up. These people should have been asked to get off the plane but no flight attendant cared. I don’t think I’ll be using spirit again. Better judgment needs to be used when letting people fly drunk.

Nothing to like about Spirit Airlines when you get to your layover up to for hours late.

We received several notifications of a delay but the flight ended up leaving on time without us even tho we were in the airport eating very close by. We received no notification that the flight moved back to its original time.

The bag drop process took longer than other airlines. The boarding and crew were good. The seats do not recline and have minimal padding. The snacks/drinks are for purchase only. The flight was on time with no issues. I would fly them again if the cost was significantly less.

Crew was excellent. Flight was overbooked No seat assignment until the last moment.

My flight was delayed then cancelled My elder parents were upstairs waiting for a spirit rep to bring them downstairs to where my sister waited for 2 hours. My elder parents are not able to walk . My dad was wet of urine from where he could not hold it .waiting for some spirit personnel to wheel chair them back down stairs to where my sister was waiting for them for two hours . That is not ok

Poor response to delay, getting on plane, off plane and back on again

My flight was uncomfortable and crammed. There were no pockets to store things, I couldn’t move my seat back slightly. Beverages including soda cost extra. My husband flew on another spirit airline flight, which was delayed a total of 48 hours, only to be canceled.

Two delays in less than 24hrs. They need to improve everything and restructure the whole company.

Terrible leg room, seats don’t recline, delayed flight, and even water isn’t free onboard

They never updated the boarding pass on their apps to show their delay

Online check-in was not user-friendly. Too many fees, not cost effective.

They wouldn’t let us on the flight even tho we were an hour early. No refund not even our bags that were prepaid

I brought a ticket and car rental through Travelocity. There was no where to add a KTN. So I thought i’d add it by looking up ticket on frontier website. I tried 3 times with the frontier chat bot to add my KTN it never updated my boarding pass. So then I tried showing up early to do it in person at the airport. The first employee update my ktn in the system and gave me a new boarding pass. I was sent back by tsa to join regular line. Then I was told to add my Ktn. It would cost me $25 extra. Given the length of the cue I did pay. Congratulations! BUT I will NEVER fly frontier again. Plus the plane was very old. It had actual ashtrays and old looking tray backs. Worst travel experience ever. Im warning my friends and family not to use frontier ever.

I did not enjoy the trip home on Frontier for several reasons: there is too much cost besides the flight, which was more than I would normally pay, then having to pay for luggage, and carry-on, seat (if you want to reserve when booking) then you must pay over $3 for a can of soda, and $4 for a snack. A cup of water is free.

Did not realize seats did not recline. Best to travel in an exit row... No question

I strongly dislike Frontier. I find them barebones, the seats not particularly comfortable, the nickel and diming is maddening, the app is TERRIBLE - super confusing to navigate, and the last 4 frontier flights I have flown have been on AVERAGE 2 hours late, one ruining a fancy night out in Vegas with reservations made well in advance, which was nodded to with a measly 5000 miles, which translates to almost nothing. At least credit a free checked bag or something.

8 hr delay. had to buy another ticket with another airline

Four and a half hour delay in total. What frustrates me most is the poor communication and disorganization.

I appreciated the upgrade to free cary-on bag and seat selection at no charge
