As it seems with most rental companies hertz counter reps seem to have been instructed to try and fool you into buying something that isn't mandatory by saying there are "additional taxes and fees". In this case I had declined all additional insurance since I carry my own automobile insurance and credit card CDW. The hertz desk then took 15 minutes of me standing there waiting for a car to be lined up and then said I owed $50 more dolllars for additional "taxes and fees", this turned out to be their LIS or liability insurance. I asked what the additional fee was and they said it was taxes and fees and did not explain it was liability insurance. I then checked later to find this out. I initially tried to connect with support but just got an AI agent that never connected me with anyone. Overall this left a bad taste in my mouth and showed Hertz is using same deceptive playbook as most rental car companies with hidden fees.Reviewed Sep 14 2026

I booked a reservation through Kayak for $93.50, but Hertz would not honor the price. They HAD the reservation, they simply wouldn't honor the price. The price they gave me was $166.13 and the person at the rental desk basically said "Take it or leave it". I had no choice but to take it since I had to be somewhere quicklyReviewed Jun 9 2024

I reserved a car from Hertz through your site on August 10, for a pickup at RNO on Sept. 22. I prepaid a portion of the charge ($171.20), leaving a balance ($54.62) due at pickup. Instead, was charged $110.64 at the Hertz desk, and told my only recourse was to call their Customer Relations/Billing phone number to resolve the issue. That proved useless, as they would not honor the stated price on my contract. I believe that $56.02has been stolen from me, and I will never rent from Hertz again. Further, if Kayak is unable to get the overcharge reversed by Hertz, I will never use your service again, and I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years. Gold member. Rented two months ahead of time for a conference. Upon arrival, I went to check in on app, which displayed “unavailable”. Wait at counter to check in, lady tells me car is ready in pick up area. Go to pick up, nobody knows what I’m taking about and don’t care to find out. Walk back to counter, tell lady my problem. She tells me to go back and wait. 40 mins later, my rental shows up covered in dirty water and all the LiDAR sensors are giving warnings. At that point I was late, so I had to take it. Bait & Switch tactics Asking me for my airline information but not booking me at the airport. To add to that, you book me at a place that closes at 5 pm knowing airlines have a 1 in 5 glitch such that when I’m delayed, the office is closed and I need to rebook at 3 times the price.
