Easy fast pickup and dropoff
Pros: Good value for the money. Pickup was quick and easy. Same with dropoff.
Cons: Nice car.

Payless, get less
Pros: It was a car and it ran.
Cons: The rental office was small and in disrepair. The car had numerous scratches on it, the seats were filthy and it pulled heavily to one side

Cons: High charge for gas if you dont return the tank full- 9. 99 per galon. I was in a hurry to catch the plane, and was charged 66$ for half of the tank missing.

Pros: I would not use Payless again out of Detroit.
Cons: Only open until 11pm, where as the other rental agency are open around the clock.

Pros: Car was great . Nice ride and comfortable.
Cons: First time I've ever been charged up front for gas rather than just zapped at end if not filled prior to drop off. Told at time of pick up to bring in receipt for gas and charges would be removed. Seemed to make it necessary to go back into office - not good when in a hurry. Further, I had an early morning flight and it turns out office didn't open until well after I needed to be at terminal. Budget employee told me how to proceed (put receipt and my ONLY copy of contract in box with my email address and I'd be "handled"). This all happened but added an unnecessary delay and stress to drop off process.

Pros: Car was dirty, trash in back seat, gas tank 3/4 full. Terrible lines for checking and out, with no system behind counter to speed things up. Check in was terrible. No signs. Staff walked away from us without telling us to go inside to check in. Only one person on staff. No signs for shuttle bus. Zero instructions on catching shuttle. I found and ask a random mechanic who told me where shuttle was, but he was incorrect. Staffing, layout, organization, systems all bad. The false level in gas tank - bad. Dirty car w trash - bad.

Cons: Pretty bad pick-up and drop-off system. Really didn't like that they added the refuel option without my consent or any advance notice of it, and claimed they would refund it if I put gas in the car. Since I would have missed my flight if I remained in the drop-off line, I did the express drop-off and I'm not confident that I'll get my $38 extra back. So that stinks.

Cons: Drop off location in Detroit airport hard to find due to small and badly placed signs. At drop off, nobody to collect the car. Client has to note miles, time and gas level.

At first concerned, then very satisfied
Pros: I'd never heard of Payless, but the price was in budget so I tried it. The staff was helpful and friendly. The second car they gave me rode very well.
Cons: Their Detroit office was very small, felt like they squeezed it into Budget's back closet. They gave me a Kia that had a smoke smell (supposed to be a smoke-free fleet). I drove it for a few days and the suspension was bad/borderline unsafe. When the USB port for the phone charger stopped working, I took the car back for a different one. They didn't question me and made the switch easy. I completed my journey with a solid smoke-free Malibu. I was very satisfied with the service.

Shuttle was easy to get to
Pros: The wait wasn't that long on our visit and they quickly got us in our car and return was easy also I wasn't told to to a mandatory toll package and my price was what they told me
Cons: They do add a up front fuel charge and then it's refunded if you bring it back full. The return was easy but the return location in parking lot didn't have a sign of where to park but the guy was there ready for us and told us where to park.

Cons: Charged $14.36 more than quoted online which is false advertising as the "lowest" cost. Sales Clerk was non-apologetic and informed these were non-optional "additional charges".

Pros: Agents were polite and worked quickly.
Cons: The estimated cost was far lower than the actual amount that I ended up paying for the car and itemized charges were vague. Because I was in a hurry, I was unable to enquire about these things. Also, Payless requires that you have a return itinerary to rent a car from this location. This was not a problem for me, but may be for others and a heads-up on this policy would be a nice courtesy for future customers.

Cons: The car was dirty inside with crumbs and nail clippings in the cup holder. Took a bit to get checked in.

Pros: I liked they car itself and the price was good. But they do cut overhead to allow the good price.
Cons: Customer service was terrible. The office is very small, cramped, and full of irate customers. You have to go into the office to return the car--and they are seriously understaffed. There was a very long line with only one register. They also provide very little guidance. The experience of returning the car took about 45 minutes. I felt that Kayak should issue a warning--"If contracting with with Payless, please allow for an extra hour." I felt terrible for the Payless staff--they seem to do their best in difficult circumstances. It must be a terrible place to work.

Pros: The pick up , nice and clean car
Cons: They charged me to much. They charged me tax more than the price of the rent . When I asked them why the first one called Lenishian couldn't answer me well and I think she hasn't experience and the second one called Marge answered me take the recipe and go out. When I asked them that I like to talk to the manager the second one answered the manager isn't here then she left out, the first one said the manager can't talking to you now.

Pros: AWESOME price and car was very economical on gas. I paid twice as much for a rental at the same location only a few months prior so I definitely will choose Payless again.
Cons: There were no CLEAN cars in the class I reserved when I arrived, so I had to wait until it could be washed/vacuumed.

Slow. Difficult employees. NOT tech advanced. Long
Pros: The car was OK. A bit dirty but manageable.
Cons: Attitude of check in employee. When renting staff was actually filling out papers by hand! Car cleanliness. Need to wait in line for returning the car back in the office.

Pros: Nothing, they were closed.
Cons: They were closed. I had to go to Budget (who matched the reservation) but still. How can you have reservations (there were 3 other people after me too) and be closed in the early afternoon!

Decent car, bad customer service
Pros: I got a Kia Forte which was clean, updated and had all the necessary things in a rental car.
Cons: The guy checking me in didn't properly explain the option refueling with them properly. He said it's just time saver and the price was competitive. When I returned the car I confirmed that I would only be charged for the amount of gas I used which shouldn't have been much since the tank was almost full. When I checked my card statement thy charged me for he full tank, triple the cost of my original reservation. When I called to talk to them, they said it was on the receipt but the receipt wasn't printed properly because their printer was broken. I have contacted the corprotate office regarding the issue and am awaiting a response and refund.

Cons: There was no owners manual in the car. I got a warning light and had to go on line to figure out what the light was saying.

Pros: New car strangely was quite dirty inside. Had about 140 miles when I rented but strange smell and dirt of some sort around console. Otherwise excellent!

Go with Alamo instead...Don't use this Payless
Cons: They have the worst ghetto customer service I have ever experienced. I booked on a 3rd party site which did not state all of the basic requirements that their so called site posted. When I got to the counter I was told that there is a $300 hold which was not stated on the site when I booked the car. The no class customer service rep started to get loud and advised that it's on their site. Not one time did she have the intelligence to know that you can book more than one way. Instead of argueing with an odvious fool, I left and went to Alamo and had no problems at all. This was my first experience with Payless and my last.

Not the car I reserved
Pros: Courteous Quick Dropoff
Cons: Did not have the full-size car I reserved. Suggested I wait until one arrived. I was already late for my meeting and had to accept a mid-size. Could not fit all my customers in the car. Big inconvenience.

Pros: I arrived at on time and they had no cars to rent. No idea when one would be returned, serviced and given to me. I had to take an Uber which was actually a cost savings. Disappointing performance by Payless for my first rental.
Cons: Staff didn't apologize.

Poor Customer Service
Pros: Car was comfortable and cheap
Cons: Cars were not ready when we hot there. Staff horsing around in full view of customers. Was not given a sign off that everything was okay with the car return. The 2 staff members hardly looked my way and did not even check that I returned the car in good condition.

No cars on the lot!
Cons: There were many people there who took the shuttle from the airport and were waiting in the small, cramped office "waiting for cars to arrive". They had NO cars on the lot.

Pros: Name booked online did not match company logo.
Cons: Employees could not find reservation. They were rude, they said out loud that they hated my type of rental. When Car was returned met with more rudeness from check in guy. At one point he walked away from me, refusing to talk or let me know what was taking so long to return a vehicle

Pros: Signage was poor and BOTH picking up the car and dropping it off was confusing and irritating. Understaffed office led to long waits.
