We enjoyed our stay at SW Hotel. The staff was most helpful, especially, Jennifer, at the front desk. The Hotel is very handy to all the shops and eateries(internationally) and within walking distance to churches & public transport.During our stay, we walked everywhere....and it was safe and pleasant. n/a
The room and bathroom were very clean. The price was comparatively attractive. The windows faced a cement wall; felt like I was underground. ** For bare bones travel to downtown SF, the place was okay. The room was drab. The staff turned off the AC daily so the room was hot each day. Walls were thin; could hear neighboring discussions. The bed was unconventionally firm. Lighting was awkward; one ceiling fixture as primary.
The location is by far the best part of this hotel. Will be staying there again every time I travel to San Fran to have a good time. Not a very large room or special hotel for anything other than location.
Staff was very friendly.Room was tiny, but given the city it was to be expected. Area of town looks seedy, but never had a problem.
Hotel is in Chinatown, only blocks away from North Beach and a nice (downhill!) walk to Fisherman's Wharf, but the cable car line was close by and provided our return to the hotel. Hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was continental style (toast, boiled eggs, cereal, coffee). Hotel and room were VERY clean and room was not as small as I thought it would be.
very clean and central, good hotel for SFO, would recommend it
It was in exactly the location i was looking for
The location. Walking distance to quite a bit. I did not like that they did not help move bags and that the internet was an additional charge. Printing was an additional fee on tp of the internet fee if someone needed. Also the room faced a brick wall and the rooms were not soundproof.
Very clean and modern. Staff friendly and helpful. The location is excellent and within walking distance to many of San Francisco tourist sights. The value was great - especially for a city hotel. The rooms are a little on the small side, but doe the value I would stay here
GREAT location. I thought being in China town would be unpleasant form (simply because I'm from NY and being in a densely populated part of town held no appeal for me - especially since I was traveling on business). But I loved it! And the hotel is situated in the strangest but most fabulous block - it's a cross section between China town and a strip of very authentic Italian/Sicilian restaurants. The best food. I ate VERY well and enjoyed the clash of cultures. The staff was so incredibly nice and professional. Very friendly and accommodated my request with no problem. I liked everything. And I'm someone who hates staying in hotels. But this was really a pleasant stay. Keep in mind that I only stayed one night. But still, it was a great stay.
The TV could not be heard well over the street noise- volume was locked at low level.
Right between Chinatown and North Beach. Clean, nicely decorated, friendly staff
Easy location, checkin, shared bath done quite nice, quiet and clean as a whistle
We could barely fit in our room because it was so small. We were the first room across from the bathroom and could hear every time someone went pee. Like literally hear them pee. The lightbulb flickered and a curtain blind fell off. The bed was uncomfortable and room was so tiny.
This place is bursting at the seams with character. I really enjoyed the vibe, though I'm not quite sure how to characterize it. I was in a room directly above the restaurant, and it was loud. Pack earplugs. The mattress wasn't super-comfortable, but it was fine.
The hotel offers good value and a good location as well as character. Guests get a discount on the nice restaurant attached to the hotel. Hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. Rooms fairly small but comfortable
I liked the atmosphere, and the fact that for a shared-bathroom facility there were multiple baths and toilets available. I also LOVED the location and the general 'feel' of the place. the room was just so incredibly TINY! barely had room to move around the bed, which would not have been so bad if there were at least some sort of desk or table to sit at, or a lounge area in the hotel that had a table and chairs (there were several couch-type areas but nothing that could double as a desk). I was travelling for work, and could not really do much at all at the hotel. also this was listed as a double room... I cannot imagine sharing this room with someone else.
Clean and very quaint. Friendly staff. The location was great, near the wharf and cruise terminal. Had coffee and tea available near the front desk. Was excellent for the price we paid! The rooms were very small. Had to put the chair on top of the wardrobe so we could both put our suitcases on the floor.
The vintage and historic feel of the hotel. there's an almost communal hostel-like atmosphere to the hotel due to the nature of amenities such as shared bathrooms and washroom. Interior is incredibly beautiful. Parking was a pain but that's an issue you'll encounter with many places in SF. gotta be careful with noise levels since you can hear things and sound can easily penetrate through walls and windows.
Was a little worried about the bathrooms being down the hall. However, this was no problem at all. Had to wait a time or two for a shower, but was extremely pleased with how clean the shared areas were maintained. Of course, would have preferred our own bathroom.
The decor and atmosphere was fantastic, i'd definately stop again and encourage others to try a few nights there for its charm and value Not really a dislike but the rooms were small, i really wanted to checkout the pent house.. maybe next time!
The price and what you get for it. The rooms were too cramped
Good location near Fisherman's Warf. Low price. Comfortable bed. Friendly staff. 100 year old hotel. Per other reviews I requested a room with a sink. This allowed me to brush my teeth, shave, and have drinking water without leaving the room. Others had to do so in the hallway shared sink. Imagine what a low rent hotel was like 100 years ago, and you will be fine. Thin walls, older mattress and bedding and furnishings. Small, but to be expected. Shared bathrooms and showers were not ideal, but not a big deal for a quick one night stay.
the location is amazing, the place is tidy and perfectly clean, we basically loved it! nothing really
We love the atmosphere and location of the hotel boheme. The room was very romantic and stylish.
Small size, very European in nature. It reminded us of a place we stayed in Florence. Our room overlooked Columbus street, and we sat at a small table in the bay window taking it all in while observing the sights and sounds of N. Beach and sipping our complimentary sherry.
The location of the hotel and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The cleanliness was very good. Carrying my luggage up the stairs
Good hotel, old but well maintained, very considerate staff. There is no elevator and you have to climb 2 flights of stairs just to get from the street to the lobby -- not easy if you have heavy luggage. I got there around 8 in the evening and there was no one who could help with the luggage. The ads for this place should more clearly indicate these limitations.
I loved the decorations in the room. It was adorable. Everything was great.
Great staff. Accommodations were cozy, unpretentious, and authentic.
The staff were great, it felt very homely and comfortable. We felt very welcome and enjoyed it immensely. Nothing
The staff was the best I have ever dealt with at any hotel ever!!! The room was showing its age and felt dirty and needed a thourough cleaning. Great location except the club nextdoor had a band playing until 2am. Close to the city attractions and Fisherman's Wharf. The bar next door was too loud for relaxing at night.
Staff was very accommodating. Parking was a challenge.
Location in North Beach section of town which was close to transportation and great restaurants; 'Happy Hour' with wine, cheese and crackers; friendly and helpful staff; price was right Room and bathroom was a little small
The room is small but love the view and the staff is friendly. Share bathroom with other visitors and there no hotel packing.
The place is advertised as a hotel but it is actally a hostel with communal bathrooms and showers.
Microwave and mini fridge in room. Tiny rooms, shared bathrooms, rude staff, NO parking, mosquitos everywhere and ready to bite the hell out of you.. Beware!
The rooms were small, but clean and comfortable. Overall, it's a great place to stay, especially for a solo traveller looking for a bargain. You also can't beat the location - City Lights bookstore is just a few blocks away and less than a mile walk to Fisherman's Wharf. If you're hungry you can hop on over to the famous Stinky Rose for some garlicy grub. The bubble tea shop nearby is also amazing. The staff was friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are shared so sometimes you have to hunt around on your floor for one that isn't occupied and, depending on the level of courtesy of the other people staying there, the bathrooms can get a tad messy.
I had a great experience staying here. Sure, it's not a Ritz Carlton or anything, but if you're looking for a simple, cheap place to stay while enjoying the city, this is it. Room was clean and I had a microwave and fridge for my food (huge plus if you're trying to save money). Wifi was surprisingly fast (not what I expected). Lastly, location is excellent. You're not far from Bart; several bus routes are within a 5 min walk; and there are plenty of attractions nearby.
Good location. Small. Bathrooms are community. Have to pay everything cash.
Nothing at all. Over charge on my card, plus they continued to charge my card after I left. I was told i would get a refund because I checked out one day early. That didn't happen. And my car got broken into in there parking garage. Never again will I stay there.
I was able to book the room for the day I needed it, which was unlikely given that I was looking to stay in SanFran at the last minute. I wouldn't stay here again if I got a free voucher. When booking, because I booked through a third party (booking.com), the hotel staff seemed to have problems confirming the reservation. Actually checking in took close to thirty minutes, which is excessive. The room ran around $170.00 for a single night stay when no events were going on in the city (on a Wednesday night, nonetheless) - which is a bit ridiculous, even for last minute reservations. The hotel had a 3 star rating on Google. I experienced 1 star service - from checking in, where several of my questions were outright ignored, to checking out - which required no identity verification at all. My group of friends and I arrived at the hotel around 3 AM (after having checked in around 9 PM and exploring the city a bit). First, the doors were locked and we had to knock on the glass to get the attention of the security guard. He would not open the door unless we showed him BOTH our state ID cards AND our room key. He explained to us that when we checked in, they only took my girlfriend and my ID, so only we were allowed to enter the hotel. This posed a problem as our friends were planning on staying in our room for several more hours. I asked if I could speak to the manager, after they refused our friends entry. The manager, in no uncertain tone of voice, told me that it was hotel policy and that the security guard had explained everything relevant already. In this particular event, my friends had had several drinks and were incapable of driving, so I was hoping they could sober up for a few hours in my room. I explained this and that they had nowhere else to go for the night to sober up, and the manager said she didn't care. I asked if I could pay a fee to allow visitors and was denied. I asked if I could book another room for them, because other than sleeping in their car (in downtown San Francisco as inebriated out of towners) they had nowhere to go. The manager said roughly the following: "There are no visitors past 10 PM period. This hotel is closed for the night, so I will not book anymore rooms for you. We open at 6 AM, and if you return then, I might attempt to book another room for you at full cost if we have any available, which I find unlikely." Ultimately, my friends and I wondered around the city for 3 or so hours until the hotel "opened" at 6 AM, at which point we all walked up to my room to rest. I was also told there was a complimentary breakfast, which was not laid out from that point until I checked out at 11:30 AM. When we got to the room, there was no air conditioning and the rooms were at a balmy / humid 90 degrees and up. We had to rely on an open window that the four of us huddled around for fresh air. The room had a single lamp, a 12 inch or so TV, two beds, and a sink. The toilet and shower (if that's what they can be called) existed on a shared basis - one each per floor.
The unit had a cot for a bed. The unit did not have a bathroom, shared bathroom on the floor and shared shower on the floor. Spent $20 more that day on a major chain hotel, this place should have been cheaper!
Cheaper than others Essentially everything else
Room was very tiny. Too expensive for sharing bathroom room. No heat control in room. Rooms are very old. Doesn't look like pictures at all.
VIEW FROM ROOM 503 WAS GREAT PRICE KINDA HIGH ROOM WAS OLD N RUN DOWN
We liked the free parking on the premises and the central location as well as the price compared to what other hotels charge. The rooms up front next to the road are very noisy especially if you are a light sleeper. Some of the clientele and their behavior detracted from the positive aspects. Walls are very thin and you hear everything.
Good location to most of San Francisco's attactions. Continental Breakfast was very disappointing-packaged roll w/in-room coffee maker. What a joke!
We had a lovely view of the bridge (Bay?) late at night and in the early morning we could see twinkly lights underneath it. Pretty. Also close to a good restaurant and the Club Fugazi.
location location location, ample room for parking the car safely and friendly staff
Location is great - free parking is wonderful, hotel is nice & comfortable
Awesome location. Room was clean, staff was very friendly. Free parking is a major benefit. We had no issues with excessive noise. Balcony was shared with the room next door, but that was never an issue. Slept great. I will stay here again, no question about it. Wifi connection wasn't the best, but it was free so not a major drawback.
Location definetly. It's in Chinatown!!!! Chinese owners, it's in Chinatown....its China man!!!!! By the way...no breakfast although both booking.com and the hotel claims to have breakfast....
Npthing Disgusting and overprice. No extra blanquet no nothing
Was a convenient last minute booking. Shared bathrooms, smelly hallways, large roach in bathroom.
Cheap Horrible hotel, dirty, noisy, the sheets and all the room smelled bad. I don't recommend it.
location, staff supportivness it's a hostel rather than hotel, wifi didn't work
The hotel was among the cheapest we found in that area, which is in a great location ( SF hotels are very expansive ), so we didn't come with too high expectations. The entrace to the hotel has high stairs so it's hard to get in with luggage. The room was clean but didn't feel completly clean. The room didn't had an AC and it got really hot (we stayed during the "Summer" of SF) but we asked, and received, a fan. The staff were nice and as we were just looked for a place to sleep and rest ,with hot shower, we were satisfied with the result. It is important to notice that the area has a lot of night clubs. Our room was at the back and on the last floor so it didn't bother us, but maybe other rooms can get more noisee. The bed spring were a bit too noticeable
It was right downtown in a great location we could walk to a bunch of shops and restaurants around.
SF weather was warm. No A/C or fan in room. Was told by staff to buy my own electrical fan for room comfort.
nothing really. the only this is that is was close to bars/restaurants. it smell like someone was smoking the whole time. people live there! and you dont even have ur own bathroom!
I liked a peaceful atmosphere. No one bothered me during my staying. Everything was easy to do regarding checking in and out. Ohhh, for this amount of money , I think everything was great.
location was ok, loud, dirty, my credit card info was compromised , not sure how... and I am NOT going to ever stay there again!
Location! location! Couldn't ask for a better spot. Right on the corner of Columbus and Broadway. You can see right down China town! Excellent food in the area and lots of history too! It is right above a strip club, but it is the first nude club ever in the US! Your also only 20mins from fisherman's wharf. Its right in the heart of the jazz area as sell as little Italy so lots of great Italian food. The Stinking Rose restaurant is right across the street and serves every thing garlic flavored. Even ice cream! Over all for the price, great place to stay. I will be back. Shared bathrooms.... more like a hostel then a hotel. Really not that bad though. They are cleaned on a daily.
