FAQs - booking Queensland flights

  • I want to travel from New York to Cairns. Which airports should I choose?

There are no nonstop flihgts from New York to Cairns, so you must account for at least two layovers. If you would prefer flights to Queensland using only one airline, don’t forget to remove the filter for multiple airlines on the KAYAK website. If you want the least number of layovers possible, then select the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as your travel’s starting point. Australian airline Qantas Airways operates nonstop flights from JFK to Sydney, from which point you can take a connecting flight, also on Qantas, to Cairns.

  • I’m booking a flight to Queensland to visit Fraser Island. Which airports do I choose?

The airport closest to Fraser Island is the Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY). However, this airport is only served by domestic flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and additionally flights from Auckland, New Zealand. If you’re traveling from the East Coast in the United States, Qantas Airways flies nonstop from JFK to Sydney, and from there, you can take a connecting flight to Sunshine Coast. From the US West Coast, Virgin Australia and Qantas Airways both fly from LAX to Brisbane, but you’ll need to account for one more layover in Melbourne or Sydney before reaching your final destination.

  • I’m visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Which airport is the closest?

The Great Barrier Reef Airport (HTI) on Hamilton Island is the closest, served only by domestic flights. If you want to book a flight to Queensland to an airport with more routes and airlines to choose from, then opt for the Brisbane Airport. QantasLink and Virgin Australia operate domestic flights from Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef Airport.

  • Which airport is closest to Port Douglas?

Cairns International Airport is the closest to Port Douglas, about 1h away by shuttle. Please keep in mind that this Queensland airport isn’t served by nonstop flights from the United States, and you’ll have to account for at least one layover.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from the United States to Queensland?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from the United States to Queensland.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from the United States to Queensland?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from the United States to Queensland is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from the United States to Queensland?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly from the United States to Queensland with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from the United States to Queensland?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from the United States to Queensland up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Sitting in an aisle seat equals getting hit by food cart and spilled on multiple times Food: gross and minimalistic Crew: frumpy and kurt Sound on multiple entertainment platforms poor Not an earplug problem, system soundboard poor

Major hassle with the weight of carryon luggage Having to repack bags at airport Not an issue in most of world Ridiculous issue considering the 400 pound gentleman sitting behind us

Overall experience was poor. In general crew was polite in speaking but that was all about it. I am vegetarian so I always carry a cup noodle box with me just in case. So I pressed "CALL" button for hot water for my cup noodle on my seat and waited for 10-15 minutes but nobody came. I personally took the box and went all the way to back of the plane. When I requested stewardess to put hot water in my cup noodle she refused as it was a "safety" hazard. I told her that you always serve coffee and tea these are also hot. But she still refused. I went back to my seat and from the seat I ordered hot water and it was brought to me without any problem. I poured THAT hot water in my cup noodle and ate. I was sitting in seat 36A, which was 2nd row in economy class. After eating my noodle I took the box and went 2 rows in the front where there was a kitchen to throw it. Again the stewardess there told me she didn't have a waste bin there and asked me to go back of the plane and throw it there. Tell me if above experiences are 'ok' for your airline??

Everything very good except the sofa couch not as comfortable as expected.

Liked the non-stop option, can always use more leg room!

Wonderful Airlines…our American Airlines could learn from ANZ. From boarding to landing everyone was professional and gracious. Kiwi’s really are the nicest of all people! Thank you

typical long haul economy flight. Food was mediocre, inflight service was average. Offered in flight snacks but in seat ordering didn't work. Entertainment was good.

Would have been nice to have decaf coffee as an option, and perhaps a scone

Overall, a great experience from food and crew. The only setback was that this was the Second flight from Air New Zealand within a week that was an hour late for boarding.

The old Plane had not been cleaned properly in a long time.

I got upgraded from economy to business, and the experience was outstanding

Boarding was over 3 hrs late and we didn’t land until almost 1:30am

I disliked the fact that they forced people to put up their seats during meal service

Headphone jacks worked poorly, seat recline was broken. Planes were rundown.

Delayed and missed connection, was not re-booked like other travelers so ended up being stuck for several hours due to no one handling my booking.

same as previous comments. i hate being on a plane that long. no problems w/anything else.

It was very nice. I will try to fly with Qantas whenever I can.

Terrible. 6 hour delay with no explanations and only 15 dollars in food credits. A disaster. I'll just leave it at that.

Much better than I expected for such a long flight.

I liked all the informational texts. I always knew where to go and when .

Boarding is very confusing. They have Line 1 and Line 2 and many many Boarding groups. Everyone lines up under those two lines long before they call zones. If you have a higher zone 2 like I did due to a Premium Plus ticket, it’s very awkward having to ask each person which zone they have. Extremely chaotic process. On board the flight attendants had no charisma whatsoever, even to us paying extra for an upgraded cabin. I asked for a chamomile tea after dinner (as no coffee or tea was even offered) and the FÃ said they didn’t have even though listed on the drink menu. Also, the mid flight service was entirely skipped which was a soup and sandwich combo. Supposedly had a variety of snacks mid flight too but those never materialized either. A few times I walked Back there, not a single flight attendant acknowledged me as they were all deep into their iPhones. I simply Wanted a glass of water since ZERO water runs were made on this 9hr 30 min flight.

Liked the hospitality . The ight took us 6 hrs to get from fort myers to ewr.

Oh my gosh, I loved my experience with United! they made me want to travel more often.

Fight was delayed an hour due to operational issues ,then further delayed due to ground control for a total of about 1.30 hours. Salad was completely frozen and flatware was so cold you could barely handle it. Crew was friendly and professional and the flight was smooth. The aircraft was clean and well-serviced.

The flight attendants in First Class were mediocre at best. They did not take our tray away until we were about to land and only did so when I press the call button. The United person at the United Club was asked to get us our boarding pass since we missed the flight due in Chicago. She argued that we did not have seats on the flight given to us in Moline. Furthermore, she was adamant that we did not have a First Class ticket. After I spent much time with her trying to show we were correct, she reluctantly agreed. She was probably the most incompetent ticketing person I have ever met and I have traveled 3 million miles on United plus many additional miles with other carriers. United has definitely deteriorated in more than on way.

The plane was in Moline all night. Consequently, we assumed an on time departure at 8:15am. Unfortunately, and as is the normal case with United in Moline, we departed 2.5 hours late. When the crew came, it was discovered that there was very little heat in the plane. Seems this should have been checked hours before the crew arrived. Then when we boarded and the plane was to be de-iced, the United de-icing truck was not working! We awaited the American Airlines truck. All of this caused us to miss our connection in Chicago. My suggestion is never take United Airlines flight from Moline. We have been disappointed 80% of the time and have vowed to not take United again from Moline.

Flight was delayed two hours. No snacks and no tv screens. My bag got stuck in Chicago

Smooth flight. As always dinner could have been more generous. Breakfast was great.

AWFUL. I have had the experience of traveling with many airlines across the world, and hands down United Airlines is the worst. Not one flight was on time, and I don’t think I met one crew member or staff member who wasn’t rude.

Small plane, so no entertainment. Hour delay! Nobody explained wht the delay was all about.

I wasn’t happy with the hour delay from Dallas to McAllen, but that is the nature of travel. I don’t like to fly in general because of all of the problems all the time.

It went up and down at the right time and place. I’m happy with that outcome.

Staff at the gate were incredibly rude, hostile and threatening. Never fly American Airlines.

DO NOT BOOK THROUGH AMERICAN AIRLINES IF YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL NEEDS. Great flight, crew etc. it wasn’t full so had space to stretch out Only downside was there was no GF option for my partner. We booked through American and it was a Qantas flight so despite contacting both airlines to confirm, she didn’t have a gluten free meal for the 16 hour flight (nor the flight in the other direction). The flight attendants did their best to accommodate but it was not super substantial.

Would have been good to have a meal since it was a 5.5 hour flight

Same problems with delays in Dallas. This was weather related and due to the incoming flight being delayed. This was the flight that was delayed due to a missing flashlight which turned out not to be missing.

Most of the delay was due to weather which is not what was at issue here. One delay was due to a missing flashlight and in the end the flashlight was actually found on the plane. The entertainment system is very limited. Live TV options offer only a few channels that are not very appealing. Boarding and deplaning are always difficult. It just takes too much time to get on and off the plane. On the plus side, I missed my connecting flight, but was easily able to book a later flight from the app while enroute.

I had a horrible experience from the time I dropped off my bags until the time I landed. The staff taking the bags at the check-in counter prior to security, forced me to check my baby stroller, even though it weighed less than 20 pounds. their excuse was that the wheels were too big. I have never had an issue gate checking this exact same stroller in the past either on American or on any other airline. when I asked for the agent to show me the rule about the size of the wheels on strollers, they told me to look it up on the AA website. I did so, and did not find any indication that wheel size was a problem for gate checking strollers. The only limitation would be the weight of the stroller which mine was below. I was left with a one-year-old child and all of my carry-on luggage, diaper bag, and the like to walk around the airport without the assistance of a stroller and had the same issue when I exited the plane and had to go all the way to baggage claim without a stroller. In addition, while on the airplane, I was told I can only get one bag of cookies as a snack, even though I was with a child. Apparently my child and I were supposed to share a cookie. While this latter issue is a minor one, it is just another example of the absolutely horrible customer service that American Airlines provides. In addition, the 737 aircraft that I was on was extremely hot and the air vents above the seat were so far away from the aisle and middle seats that it was comical. I could barely reach the air vent to adjust it. I had to ask the person in the window seat to do it for me. The whole experience was just a nightmare.

We boarded after several delays due to mechanical failure and a gate change. The seat cushion in the exit row was very compressed and offered no cushion, making the four-hour journey reasonably uncomfortable. The WiFi worked for a few people, but for most, it did not, and you cannot get entertainment unless you can connect—American Airlines flights do not have seatback screens, and you must use your mobile phone.

Economy middle seat was so narrow that I could not sit back comfortably with passengers on either side of me. Over the 9-hour flight, with my body slightly twisted most of that time, my previously-healthy left knee became very painful, even though I got up to walk multiple times. The knee is still painful 3 weeks later. Otherwise, it was a nice flight, but I was crippled over my entire vacation.

Ok Did not like that the second leg of flight was moved earlier making it a rush to make

Ok Did not like that the second leg of flight was moved earlier making it a rush to make it

Overcharged by either United or Air Canada. Abuse of access to my credit/debit card.

Overall it was great! Seats were comfortable. We were offered snack and drink on the way to Florida but only a drink coming back. Free messaging for aero plan members was a great feature to have on board so we can connect with loved ones … entertainment like movies and shows was also a good selection!

On the Vancouver to NRT flight, The staff were condescending and withheld at times. There were times when they appeared to be more concerned with socializing with each other than appearing professional. I know it must be a hard job, but being chatty and handsy with each other in the public view only to be condescending to customers isn’t a good look.

The problem in part was with the airports, not really the fault of Air Canada. Confusing directions regarding the gate, in Seattle the recommended shuttle train entrance was not working. Simular problems in Toronto. Baggage arrived in good time. Marx Bros movie on entertainment from Seattle. I was told I was laughing too loudly, by the flight attendant. No lounge in Seattle. Lounge in Toronto excellent.

Made me check my carry on despite there being dozens of empty bins when I boarded which significantly inconvenienced me.

I arrived for my flight and was told I was now on standby as my assigned seat when I purchased my ticket was just deemed unusable 15 mins ago. My parents had to wait and hour and a half at the airport to see if I’d get in the plane. Finally when all passengers had boarded the plane I was finally told they did have another seat for me. When I boarded I saw someone else sitting in my originally assigned seat. It was in the emergency exit row and has extra leg room. I have sat in this row many times and am able to help in an emergency so no reason for me to have been kicked out of this seat. The new seat I was assigned had no padding and was extremely uncomfortable. Upon landing my back was very sore and I will probably need to see a massage therapist to help ease the tension. There was no tv or way to charge my phone on the plane. Worst flight I’ve taken in a while by far.
