FAQs - booking Queensland flights

  • I want to travel from New York to Cairns. Which airports should I choose?

There are no nonstop flihgts from New York to Cairns, so you must account for at least two layovers. If you would prefer flights to Queensland using only one airline, don’t forget to remove the filter for multiple airlines on the KAYAK website. If you want the least number of layovers possible, then select the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as your travel’s starting point. Australian airline Qantas Airways operates nonstop flights from JFK to Sydney, from which point you can take a connecting flight, also on Qantas, to Cairns.

  • I’m booking a flight to Queensland to visit Fraser Island. Which airports do I choose?

The airport closest to Fraser Island is the Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY). However, this airport is only served by domestic flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and additionally flights from Auckland, New Zealand. If you’re traveling from the East Coast in the United States, Qantas Airways flies nonstop from JFK to Sydney, and from there, you can take a connecting flight to Sunshine Coast. From the US West Coast, Virgin Australia and Qantas Airways both fly from LAX to Brisbane, but you’ll need to account for one more layover in Melbourne or Sydney before reaching your final destination.

  • I’m visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Which airport is the closest?

The Great Barrier Reef Airport (HTI) on Hamilton Island is the closest, served only by domestic flights. If you want to book a flight to Queensland to an airport with more routes and airlines to choose from, then opt for the Brisbane Airport. QantasLink and Virgin Australia operate domestic flights from Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef Airport.

  • Which airport is closest to Port Douglas?

Cairns International Airport is the closest to Port Douglas, about 1h away by shuttle. Please keep in mind that this Queensland airport isn’t served by nonstop flights from the United States, and you’ll have to account for at least one layover.

  • How long is the flight to Queensland?

An average nonstop flight from the United States to Queensland takes 23h 54m, covering a distance of 8065 miles. The most popular route is Los Angeles - Brisbane with an average flight time of 14h 45m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Queensland?

The cheapest ticket to Queensland from the United States found in the last 72 hours was $862 one-way, and $463 round-trip. The most popular route is from Los Angeles to Brisbane and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was $844.

  • Which airlines fly to Queensland?

American Airlines, Alaska Airlines & WestJet fly the most frequently from the United States to Queensland.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Queensland?

The next most popular destinations are Cairns (10%) and Coolangatta (9%). Searches for flights to Maroochydore (4%), to Townsville (3%) and to Hervey Bay (0.7%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Queensland

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Queensland flight deals.
  • Eight major airports serve Queensland, but only Brisbane Airport (BNE) has nonstop connections to destinations in the United States. Hawaiian Airlines operates nonstop flights to Queensland from Honolulu, and Qantas and Virgin Australia fly to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
  • If you’re looking for flights to Queensland from the United States to visit Cairns, be aware that all flights land at Cairns International Airport (CNS), but you’ll have to account for at least one layover in Brisbane or Sydney.
  • If you’re planning a trip to southern Queensland, look for flights that land at the Gold Coast Airport (OOL). If you don’t mind the number of layovers but would prefer to stick to only one airline, this airport is used as a hub by Virgin Australia.
  • Even though not all major airports in Queensland receive nonstop flights from the United States, most are connected by regular flights operated by Australian low-cost airline Jetstar.
  • United States citizens need a visa to visit Australia. If you’re traveling as a tourist and are staying for fewer than 90 days, you can apply for an Electronic Travel Authority online. Keep in mind that you still need to have a valid passport to travel.

I loved the wifi, much better than Delta. Seats were old. and bathrooms dingy.

My tv was broken on the flight which is disappointing when you pay for a seat and expect a service

Always delays from Boston to Salt lake but this time was very long. Don’t understand while they board the passengers and then make them sit in the plane

The boarding and flight were ok, but there were several painful issues. The flight was 3:20 in the air and almost four hours door to door, but they only had snack packs on the plane. They really need to have food on longer flights or make it clear to everyone that they won’t have food. They also advertise free WiFi, but it did not work for 90% of this flight. Again, almost four hours door to door. If I had known I was flying spirit for JetBlue prices then I would have planned differently.

There was no wheelchair or wheelchair escort at the gate..unacceptable

Delayed 4 hours because of maintenance issue they knew about all day. Get another plane. Time is precious!

Surly, unhelpful ground staff at JFK. There was a complete lack of empathy—a flawed check-in ordeal caused us to miss our flight. All airlines that I have ever flown would have worked to help me solve the ticket problem. Instead, frontline employees shrugged their shoulders and pointed fingers at us for having made an error. I will do anything to avoid EVER flying on Jet Blue again. It well deserves its low rank among airlines.

no wifi and the aircraft was very old with tiny 4” screens.

Did not wait long for wheelchair and attendant to arrive after checking in. Wheeled down to plane Was greeted with a smile when entering the plane Choice of snacks was very limited to 2 items. Seats are uncomfortable. My butt was sore after the 1st hour of flying. Needs better cushioning at seats.

Did not wait long for wheelchair and attendant to arrive after checking in. Wheeled down to plane Was greeted with a smile when entering the plane Choice of snacks was very limited to 2 items.

Very uncomfortable seats and seat backs, and I am only 5’9”. Delayed due to crew issues, spent a long time with no ventilation. Teeny overhead bins. Wifi worked well. Arrived safely.

Boarding was friendly and quick. While the plane model was older with no live tv, the entertainment was full of movies and tv shows. All food was available. Pilots were very communicative with status of the flight. Flight landed on time.

Amazing comfortable chairs great snacks super friendly staff pilots did excellent job. Smooth sailing all the way. Definitely be flying United more.

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

I was delighted that we were able to get on the 4:40 pm flight rather than our original booking at 6:55 pm!! Other than that, the flight was comfortable and landed early😊

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

Missed this flight due to delays from my previous flight

We waited too long to get water while the plane was on the Tarmac awaiting de-icing.

The flight from Ottawa to Chicago took a lot longer due to DC in Ottawa. We got to Chicago and went to our gate to catch our flight. We only had nine minutes I found that very stressful.

Flight was delayed by over an hour and gate checked bags took 15 minutes to be delivered to the jet bridge.

I can say I will not be taking this airline again any time soon. Seat were uncomfortable and too tight. Lack of chair screen and little overhead space.

Well, flight times cause some wait, but there were not times available and we understood. I didn't check any luggage, because it has become too expensive. I was able to add any extra items to my co-travellers check bags. [Luckily, this trip wasn't international.] Last, I hadn't flown AA domestically for a while, but partners and coworkers had warned me in advance that not all planes have monitors at every seat. Luckily, I was mostly prepared to use the in-flight entertainment and happy I was. The great: AA staff is always kind and comfort is way better than the budget airlines that I sometimes have to fly. I know my points and vouchers all expired over the last couple of years, but I still enjoy AA when I do fly with them. I also appreciate all of the locations we can go directly from pur home airport. Since we are traveling more now, I hope to take advantage.

Poor on time performance. Flight was delayed due to a lightbulb. No updates from the pilot. Plane was dirty and hot, AC didn't work well.

Perfect flight. On time departure and early arrival. Smooth flight.

It was right on time and crew were very courteous

Charlotte airport is miserable. For American I always have to connect from the end of terminal E to the end of terminal B and the stupid moving walkways are always broken. And the flights to all seem of least importance so they never leave on time in either direction.

Cut off carry ons, had to check, got on and there was plenty of bin space. Disappointing.

Nice clean modern plane no issues with the b flight

Being back games on the in-flight entertainment. Also your flight attendants need a break, raise, or overall attitude adjustment.

Flight attendants used to be nice to people. And any flight over 5 hours should have some kind of food other than tiny pretzels and one drink comped.

A solid 5 stars. Could it have been better? Not for that price!! The crew was well humored and kind. The process was easy and efficient. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Check in easy, price very good, no frills flying tho! Pay for Every item once seat is paid for so do the math with baggage fees and carry on fees.

I was penalized for a mistake made by your team

comfortable flight. not fond of the idea to pay for every little detail. baggage checkin or carry ons, basic snack, or some sort of basic entertainment/wifi. would be nice to offer these as perks and stop with the penny pinching.

They changed our gate 30 minutes before boarding began. We noticed about 20 people missed their flight due to doors closing early.

It would have been no e to have the option of a mid day flight and not super early or super late in the day.

Flight was delayed 2+ hours missed a concert because of it…

Smooth flight flight attendants were extremely helpful kind friendly. I had Glenn he was by far the most outgoing

Flight was late taking off. I think the crew and pilots did a good job. It definitely worked for me. I would fly spirit again thank you.

Never made it to Atlanta due to the horrible policy of having to be at the gate 1 hour prior to departure. I was at the airport and the plane had not left Baltimore, but was not allowed to board.

The check in at the airport was awful. Told I need to pay for a bag. The item was taken at screening. I went back to get my $ back and they gave me a coupon with a QR code that doesn’t work. Worst costumer service ever!!!!!

Our flight was on time and unremarkable which I'm grateful for, as it is not the norm traveling these days. Frontier is a low-cost carrier and it really shows when compared to other "normal" carriers. They don't even give you water during the flight. The coach seats are decent, however it was not as clean as it should be. We had crumbs all over the floor by our seats.

Flying frontier reminded me of flying with my family in the 80’s in all of the worst ways possible. From poor customer service to little to no technology. The plane was dirty old and also stuck in the 80’s. From their seatbelts to not having anywhere to charge our phones the seats and the equipment I wasn’t sure if I was being punked or thrown back in time. Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again.

4 hour delay because they used our aircraft to fly a different segment (per the captain)

Lost baggage on my connecting flight. 24 hours later, still no update on my bags.

They lost my baggage on my connection flight, it’s been 24 hours since I put my claim in and still no update on my bags.

As per ultra-low-cost-carrier model, you must adjust to a minimalist approach (or, pay-as-you-go mentality) when evaluating Frontier. That said, here's the pro/con of this trip. PROs Pricing. Incredibly cheap: $30 roundtrip(!!) PDX-PHX. Hard to complain. Schedule: Direct both ways. Pilot made up time and we got in 15-20 mins early each way. Aircraft. Frontier flies Airbus metal, and the aircraft are pretty new. Seating. Airline status-match got me upgraded 'Stretch' seating (their premium economy). *Excellent* legroom. The leather trimmed seats were adequately comfortable. Some of these upgraded seats have recline (this flight did not), and larger tray tables. Compared to standard Frontier economy, which has very tight seating, and ridiculously small tray tables, it was quite nice. Aircrew: The flight attendants on both legs were top tier. Experience, confidence, and customer service skills exceeded what I have seen on the legacy carriers. This is not always true with Frontier, but this team was exemplary. Food-for-sale. Frontier offers no complimentary snacks/bevs except ice water. Purchased a cheese pack and it was adequate and about as expensive as you'd see on a legacy carrier. CONs No power at seats. True on all Frontier flights, but a bummer nonetheless. Bring a battery. No inflight entertainment. Load your own offline before flying. No wifi available. Honestly, with Frontier's upsell model, it still surprises me they don't equip their planes for this and use it as a revenue stream. Heck, for a $30 rt flight, I'd probably have paid $10-15 each way for wifi + movies. Overall, you know going in about the CONs of the carrier model, so really the complaints are minor. I had a day trip to Phoenix for a $30 flight. Great value.

I have come to accept Frontier as an absolute no-frills airline, paying for everything I want. A 4.5-hour flight should provide me with a complimentary beverage—rather, $4.9x for a soda. Or a bottle of water ought to be extended at no cost. 4 beers are on the menu, but only 1 type of beer is available (at $9.95). Also, so many restrictions to using a voucher from Barclay‘s Credit Card. Finally, try to reach a live agent for Frontier- impossible!

I had to cancel within 1hour of the reservation an they put you through hell to . no live customer service desk. I'm handy caped and they make it almost impossible to cancel. They are steeling my money. You should not have that airline on your site. Contact me and I will give you all info. Of what the are doing to me just notable treatment they are set up like that to take people

The flight was delayed and I had to cancel because I would have missed my connection and there were no other flights for the next two days. They also lost my bag!!
