Good price and service
Pros: Staff was friendly and helpful. Vehicle was roomy enough for all of us and our stuff. Charges were just as promised...no surprises.
Cons: The interior was badly stained. My car doesn't look that bad after 13 years and 180k miles.

Pros: Interior was clean.
Cons: Didn't have the type of car I reserved in stock, key fob didn't work, I didn't fully understand the gas purchase I was talked into until I'd already paid for it, tire was low and seemed to have a leak.

Not a great experience
Cons: Pick up was outside, apart from the other rental cars, only 1 guy working there. We had reserved a full size car, my husband is very tall and we were doing a lot driving, they had no full size cars. They gave s a smaller car but didn't offer to give us a lower price. We inquired about this and they said it's only $10 difference. The car was clean on the outside but very dirty and stained inside and didn't smell great. They didn't ask ask for our insurance or go over the car with us to look for damage so we were a little nervous about that. The car drove fine but was small, uncomfortable and stinky. Wouldn't use them again even to save some money.

Don't rent here
Pros: Long line in a hot parking lot in the sun, no cars even with a valid reservation, helpless counter help, no customer service, arguing with clients, ultimately long wait with no rental. They should go out of business.

Way too busy, crazy long wait lines
Cons: Stood in line for almost an hour. Seemed like they had never taken a rental before because it took 10+ minutes per person. Ridiculous how long I waited, next time I'll pay the extra 3 dollars and go with someone else.

Hot and cold
Pros: This car was fine for the purposes we needed that week. The overworked clerk was friendly.
Cons: The pickup kiosk was a disaster, located in the parking lot rather than the Rental Car Center, with a long line, no chairs to sit down in 100 degree weather, and only one clerk for pickup, dropoff, and problem solving. Many delays.

Cons: When I got there we stood in a long line in the heat because they only had one man working the window... I had requested a midsize vehiicle but I was given a mercury lancer... super small and all dinged up. When I saw this vehicle I wasn't happy so I went back and told the guy I wanted a different car but he didn't have any so I asked him to void the 200.00 charge from my card. I asked for a receipt but the guy said the printer was broken... I was hot and frustrated and ran inside to rent a vehicle from Budget instead.. I decided to go back and get my receipt and again he said the printer didn't work so I had him write out a receipt .... The charge has not yet been removed from my checking account so I will call on Monday if nothing has changed... I shouldn't have to spend the time calling... I'll never use Payless again

Some people just don't travel well!
Pros: Once getting to the window, rapid process to get out the door. Despite being overloaded, attendant was polite.
Cons: While it was a longer than desirable wait, there was only one employee working the checkout. I'm sure other people were complaining. Not a big deal.

Pros: I was given a good, clean and almost brand new car. Overall, the experience was pretty good.
Cons: They were a bit disorganized with available cars when we arrived, but it got worked out.

Pros: The price and the free upgrade because there were no compact cars in the rental area.
Cons: The counter was hard to find, I had to ask another rental company where to find it. There was only one person at the counter, and it was hot and after being delayed and cancelled from flights, I was hoping to have a smooth transaction with the rental car , however there were no compact cars so after waiting for 20 minutes, the clerk just issued the midsized vehicle that he had.

worst car rental experience of my life
Cons: a few days after picking up my rental car in Sacramento, i had a need to change my drop off date and location. i called Payless corporate reservation services at least half a dozen times. twice, the associates said they just didnt understand how to do what i was asking. once i got put on-hold indefinitely. once i flat-out got hung up on when we were in the midst of trying to work through the details. another time i was told to call back in 30 minutes to talk to a supervisor named george. when i called back, there was no george. it was an outrageous, unbelievable MESS and incredibly unprofessional. the associates werent trying to help, and werent apologetic about the fact that they couldnt assist me. when i finally got someone who was able to change my drop-off dates, she told me there would be an $11 daily fee. i said fine, and so she made the change. however, after she confirmed it was complete, she told me about a $350 change fee AND that my daily rate would go up as well, but that she couldnt tell me exactly what that new daily rate was and i would have to call a local Payless office. and she got very defensive/aggressive in her delivery! accusing me of not listening to her when she explained the additional fees (which, again, she only told me about the $11/day). it felt like i was under attack when i was actually the victim of ridiculously bad customer service, disfunctional customer response teams and a horribly disorganized unprofessional organization. NEVERTHELESS, i followed her instructions and called a local office to talk to someone about a.) What my new daily rate was and b.) confirm the new dropoff location. While this person was able to successfully change the dropoff location AND tell me my new daily rate (it had gone up $20 + the $11/day fee), she gave me different numbers about the other fees incurred and ultimately it took us 30+ minutes to work it all out. I cant wait to get rid of this car, submit a massive complaint to Payless, and tell everyone I know LOUD AND CLEAR never to rent from this farce of a professional organization again.

Stale Cigarette Smell
Cons: Worst car rental experience ever. If you need to rent a car ar Sacramento International Airport, dont choose Payless. When we picked up the car there was a long slow line of customers and only one employee in site. Employee did not walk with us out to the car to do visual inspection of vehicle like most companies do. Overwhelming cigarette smell even though the sticker on window indicated $250 fee for smoking in vehicle. Stood in line AGAIN to notify them of the smell so that I wouldnt be charged and to request a new vehicle. I was told too bad we dont have another midsize suv and was told I would have to downgrade. I reserved that size vehicle for a reason so I couldnt change to a car.

Quick and easy
Pros: We got a upgrade at no additional cost, nor asking for it. Service was great going in and out. Vehicle wasn't clean outside so they gave us 10% off without asking and offered another vehicle to exchange if o didn't like how dirty the vehicle was. I knew it was going to rain within 24 hours so I knew the vehicle was going to be washed by Mother Nature

Pros: The car was clean and in good shape.
Cons: It had a very strong odor of gasoline and it made me feel very tired. I had to have the windows down to reduce odor, but it was very cold outside. Passengers refused to ride in my car.

Horrible experience at Payless Car Rental!
Cons: Car wasn't ready, they kept telling customers 20-30 minutes before car would be ready(washed). Had a doctors appt and had to get a ride to Sacramento because car wasn't ready. Had to get a ride back to SMF to get car three hours later. 800 customer service was absolutely useless!! Never again! Gas was 1/4 tank, contract said full. The staff was horrible finally they told guests "we won't even give you a guess of when you might get your car, go see if you can rent from someone else."

Great for what your paying
Pros: Even though the vehicle we rented wasn't it, they were able to give us another rental car that was even better for the same price. Smooth service and I love it that it was fast. Great customer service as well.
Cons: I had to wait in line for a while. The vehicle windows was very dirty. Car wash needed.

RAN OUT OF CARS????
Pros: Did not like any part of their service.
Cons: I flew into Sacramento and arrived at their booth to a darkness. An attendant was there in the dark and instructed me that they were closed. When I told them that I had a reservation they said sorry but we are sold out. They also told me that this was terrible management so apparently their own staff thought it was ridiculous. I will never rent from them again. Brutal!

Pros: The car was wonderful. Roomy and comfortable while not overly large.
Cons: My mother, who doesn't drive, wanted to pay for the rental. When we picked up the car, we were told that this would not be a problem. When we picked up the car, we were told that since I would be doing the driving, they had to have my credit card on record since they required that the credit card match the driver's license they had on file. We were told that this could be changed when we returned the car and that they would have no problem with putting the charge on her card. When we returned the car, their story changed. Now, while they could put the charge on any of MY cards that I liked, the charge had to go on my card. They would not accept her card as payment AT ALL. Plus, while the reservation clearly said that this location was in the rental car terminal, they really are not. They are outside, in the parking lot of the rental car terminal and do not have any counter space in the terminal itself. When we returned the car, the only employee at the counter was on the phone taking a reservation and no one would even acknowledge our presence. This was in pouring rain.

Cons: There were three people in front of me, and after 15 minutes there still was one person before me. I left to another car rental and when I drove away I saw the person that was in front of me finally getting their car. Unacceptable.

Adds Insurance and Roadside without consent to ear
Pros: Car was somewhat affordable but could have been cleaned up better.
Cons: The lady whom was helping us made a big deal at the fact that I called her out on adding roadside assistance and insurance without my permission. When I said my insurance covers me and that I already checked, she proceeded to tell me that it doesn't matter and that it's a law to have insurance on the car. First off, in CA, you as a car rental company are required to have liability on the car. Stop trying to cheat people and make extra money off them. Times are rough and its people like you and your company that make it harder to survive. Be honest, help people and make money at the same time. It will get you much farther and keep you in business. Also, during pick up and drop off other customers were arguing about mis quotes and add ons without their consent. I won't rent from Payless again, it's not worth the headache.

Pros: The car wasn't very clean upon pick up, but we were in a rush to leave. The driver side didn't have a mat under the feet, which made cleaning difficult for customer. The USB didn't function with ipod and other media products. Overall I've rented for the same price with a better value. Paylesscar.com can do more to provide customers with a clean car.

Payless = Get Less
Pros: Price was fairly attractive but don't be fooled.
Cons: It's the one rental agency relegated to an outdoor shack at the Sacramento airport. The line was so long it was out the door - only one poor agent to handle the crowd. We reserved an SUV but when we arrived no SUV was available. Her recompense was to take five dollars off the daily rate. Wow. We ended up driving back two days later to return the car and go with another company. Complaints to the counter were refered to corporate. When we called corporate they said we had to deal with the counter. Do. Not. Use.

Awful, awful experience—greedy, deceitful company
Pros: There was nothing positive about this experience.
Cons: The Payless clerk tried to charge me $100 more than the agreed price by adding to the contract without my approval the prepaid gas option and roadside assistance. I had to argue to get her to remove the gas option, and when I told her I already have roadside assistance through AAA, she told me that Payless cars don't have spare tires so AAA can't help me if I get a flat. When asked why their cars don't have a spare, she explained that no new car comes with a spare. It wasn't until I took her out to the car and showed her the spare tire that she agreed to remove the roadside assistance charge. By then I'd had enough and declined the rental altogether.
