Flights to Germany: the best tips from KAYAK users' own experiences

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew to Germany

Worth paying for the extra legroom in economy. The regular economy seating in UA is too cramped for a long haul flight
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Jul 2026
Download your boarding pass before getting to the airport.
RoyaFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2026
Give yourself enough time if you have connecting flight cause emigration takes about 1 hr by itself
Verified travelerFlew with Condor-Aug 2026
Allow extra time for connections in Franfurt. We barely made our connecting flight.
GabrielFlew with Condor-Jun 2026
Bring your own food, show up a couple hours early and be prepared.
Verified travelerFlew with Condor-Jun 2026
Frankfurt airport was very disappointing. We had a connecting flight and had to go through another round of security where every second bag was set aside for extra inspection. It took 20 minutes to get it done, we almost missed our flight and nobody cared. No air conditioning at the airport and the restrooms were out of toilet paper. Not enough seating at boarding considering the sizes of the planes flying out.
KarenFlew with Lufthansa-Jul 2026
I wish I'd know how big the airport was so I couldn't have booked assistance since I've got asthma. It was not good rushing through in the heat trying to get to the gate in an unformilliar airport.
RobertFlew with United Airlines-Jun 2026
Be prepared to pay for luggage when you buy your ticket and be charged again at the terminal.
KenFlew with Lufthansa-May 2026
Get a good blow up seat cushion if traveling in economy
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2026
Bring your own entertainment. Prepare for cramped seating.
ChristineFlew with Lufthansa-May 2026
The lines at Frankfurt were ridiculously long. Give yourself plenty of time.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Jan 2026
Sadly since I never could reschedule that flight I don’t know but maybe when possible allow more than a 2 hour layover if there is a possibility of bad weather.
PawanFlew with Lufthansa-Jan 2026
Food- be specific if you dont want to eat Meat. And the vegetarian choices are really bad. Pack exact 23 KG/ 50 LB or else you have to pay
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2025
Wearing comfortable clothing is really important. ( it’s a long flight)
MichaelFlew with Lufthansa-Mar 2025
Get seats in a back, more chances to get empty seat next to you
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2024
Lufthansa was an excellent experience, everything well organized and on time. If you desire healthy snacks, that I would advise bringing them with you. This is pretty much what happens everywhere.
Jean-LouisFlew with Lufthansa-Oct 2024
If flying business class look for seats towards the front of aircraft. Sleeper seats are comfortable but nothing like Deltas current Business Class configuration.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Sep 2024
Be prepared to wait in long line for boarder control. Allow enough time for your layover
SanjayFlew with Lufthansa-Sep 2024
Golden rule for connecting flights in & out of Europe. Minimum 3 hour layover.
AnastasiaFlew with Lufthansa-Sep 2024
Keep plenty of time for security searches, they are unpredictable.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Aug 2024
The 747-8 had a galley where you could order food and drinks outside the normal schedule. Very convenient if you have an aisle seat.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Aug 2024
Be early rather than on time for unexpected delays. The amount of travelers during the summer can be intense
keithFlew with United Airlines-Jul 2024
Regardless of Munich as a final destination or connection, you need to go through passport control, which was not organanized well. I had a connecting flight 90 min after landing, and I barely made it. The line for Passport control had about 500 people in front of me. Be prepared for this when booking if you have a connecting flight.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Jul 2024
Your airlines was convent to travel on but should try to go directly through your airlines to avoid extra extra fees and charges by third parties. Can you book flights directly at airport for future flights?
Verified travelerFlew with Iberia-Aug 2024
American boards the front of the airplane first so there wasn't very much room in the overhead bins by the time the people in the back of the airline boarded.
MedaFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2024
Make sure your passport isn’t expiring within 6 months of your flight. Check in online. And get an e visa
MichaelFlew with Condor-Jun 2024
Bring snacks, make sure you follow luggage guidelines,
CarolFlew with Lufthansa-Jul 2024
Get to airport at least 1.5 hr early.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Apr 2024
If you don't have checked luggage, no need to be in a rush to line up. There will be a spot for your little carry-on rollie bag, so relax until the line is down to board the plane.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2024
Pay extra for a little better seating. Definitely worth it
RobertFlew with Lufthansa-Apr 2024
Make sure luggage can make connecting flight. Bring small luggage of supplies in case your bags are lost or delayed.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Mar 2024
Don’t expect to sleep. Bring a sleeping pill and an eye shield.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2024
More than 60 minutes to change planes are better.
StefanieFlew with Lufthansa-Feb 2024
Try to find flights with layovers of two hours or more To prevent missing connecting flights.
HelenFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2023
Board the flight with everyone since they don’t seem to check and the boarding scanning is no longer a scan of your documents. You walk through the gate one person at a time, even the kiddos. Luggage bins were so full. Check it in and don’t forget air tags. That provided great comfort to know your luggage’s proximity.

They announced a mechanical issue prior to boarding Said it was fixed, we boarded Waited Then learned it was not fixed Had to deplane and go to new gate Bought wifi on plane and it never worked

The plane was a rather tired 737-800, with old style small luggage bins. Poor air flow. USB charger in the infotainment system was not functioning. The flight was 2 hours late due to crew rest requirements (not their fault). On arrival in Seattle, waited on the tarmac for 30 minutes with very few updates from the crew.

Flight was delayed and we were on the runway after landing for 30 mins

The plane is old. There was water dripping fown from the air cooling system. The toilets were mot that clean

We were delayed so pilots can rest and had no WiFi the whole trip. First class seats are small compared to other planes

The experience was bad. Flight was delayed to handle maintenance (understandable) but still there was some dew forming and dropping as droplets on few seats. Internet at best was allowing some browsing but at a snail pace.

We were delayed 2 hours because of a broken seat. Other than that it was a very nice flight.

There needs to be better accommodations for waiting passengers. A a designated standing space that is separated and away from concourse traffic.

My seats are comfortable because I choose to fly in the exit rows and this time upgraded to first class with minimum sky miles. Otherwise, I would not be happy in regular seats or even middle comfort seats. Onboarding on the return flight from Nashville to Atlanta was hot and very uncomfortable for over 30 minutes due to extreme hot weather. However, Delta should provide some other air flow option as it was almost unbearable until 10 minutes after take-off. First class seats should be equipped with cup holders. Currently, the middle console is used and is flat and prone to spilling drinks.

Still room for improvement in food and beverage selection: bring back Cognac

Good flight. Mass boarding. Seats fairly comfortable. Food okay although may have upset my stomach a bit.

The crew were nice and courteous. Exonomy seats were worse than expected. Overhead bin space was non existent thanks to loose enforcement of the carryon size and letting passengers put up their purses jackets and backpacks up there leaving no space for others with a small conforming carry on. Food was not good at all. Perhaps worse chicken I ever had in my life. I had to have them take it after tasting how bad it was. Whoever made that should not be in food making business.

The crew was very helpful and friendly. Food was good. The only issue was the legroom -- not great. The seat in front is also too close to see the entertainment screen properly.

Everything was perfect. I would’ve liked better selections for entertainment, but I slept most of the time, so it wasn’t really an issue.

No crying babies the whole flight would be nice. Impossible to sleep. No free snacks , only the main meal

The crew was amazing. Our seats was not very clean and even that was not a full flight but our seats was right beside the WC which did not let us to have a moment of rest.

Excellent service, and came on time! Thank you for your dinner that was chicken with salat/, and 🍰 it was good quality food , the breakfast was very good with good cheese , butter, etc and the tea was very good quality. The space where I was seat was nice so I could stretch my legs. I dit not have the bread as I am in a keto died. Have great time everyone in Scandinavia airline.

You cancelled my flight and didn't arrange another. Sent no info except YOUR FLIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. HERES WHAT TO DO NEXT. and the rest of the email was blank???

They lost my luggage and there is no update, no luggage and no hope that they will find it. It has been 26 hours since we landed

A Lufthansa flight operated by SAS with a jettime plane. Fight was nice, no food but free tea and coffee.

Staff and flight attendants were very polite. Flight was smooth. My seat on the plane was a bit broken so it would not stay in upright position but it was fine for the most part.

Agents at gate were not immediately available to solve problems and once they did they didn’t fix all the fight connections

We used Kayak to reserve our tickets and specifically checked the luggage option which was a more expensive option. When we arrived at the terminal we had to pay an extra $90 per suitcase for the three passengers. This has been a pattern for the past 3 years. Why charge for a more expensive luggage option, and the ticket price not include luggage?

Flight cancelled instead of leaving Friday am now, maybe, leaving Sunday

one of the flight attendants on the Dallas to frankfurt leg was somewhat rude..

United has maintenance issues and can then never recover. No operations ability and simple issues always turn into multiple hours long cascading delays. Worst airline on earth.

Check in was chaotic with only one counter for business class and first class. The luggage conveyor belt at JFK airport was broken so the flight departure was delayed which made the flight stressful as I had a tight connection. Although the captain said they could make up the delay, they didn’t do so.

Our flight was canceled same day and we were never informed. Had to pay more and worse seating on another airline.

Excellent! I got to Munich and was transferred to my Lufthansa flight quickly, in 15 to 20 minutes, so I did not miss my flight. However, I had checked my overhead bag at the boarding gate in Tampa. That got to Tunis the next day. That is to be expected.

Friendliest Flight Attendant I’ve seen since I flew on Southwest Airlines. The whole trip was outstanding…and arrived Early!

The crew could deploy more customer focus and not frown when asked a question. I’m speaking of one lady in particular who raised a hand in my face for me to wait whe I tried to ask a question and never came back to me. Very unprofessional and rude.

They set someone on our assigned seats and we ended up finding seats for ourselves to ensure the family sits together.

Very efficient and excellent service. Nice amenities and beautiful plane. Elevated meals. Boarding could have been more organized. We missed our connecting flight due to EU entry but Lufthansa was extremely quick to rebook us.

Aircraft had fairly roomy seats on economy. Food was good (beef dinner).

Broken seat did not recline fully, broken footrest, no air vents, no electricity for charging devices, outlets for headphones or isb did not work. Rude crew. Horrible experience. Would never fly Lufthansa again

The Discover flight from TPA to FRA was exceptionally unprofessional and incompetent in organization. First the entertainment system was completely nonfunctional for the entire plane and no competent IT support to fix. Than they could not serve any coffee or tea because they ran out of water - reflecting the exceptionally incompetent management at Discovery and most embarrassing for Lufthansa and a German airline, more like a third world country. The food was mediocre at best and minimalistic for Discover, particularly with the much higher standards at Lufthansa.

Lufthansa's Miami International counter folks are very strict on carry-on weight. Can't be greater than 8 kg otherwise they force you to check it for a fee. Bags came out at baggage claim as soon as we arrived to that location (it is a far walk from arrival gate to bag pickup). We do travel with Lufthansa domestically and enjoy every trip.

It started well but flight was cancelled and they created a nightmare rebooking. It is two days later and we still haven’t reached our destination. I am in Amsterdam waiting on transfer desk to open (later than other airlines) to hopefully get a boarding pass. Once that problem is solved we will just pray this flight isn’t cancelled too.

The flight was cancelled, so why are you asking me how the flight was?

We sat in our seats on the tarmac for almost 3 hours due to storms. They would not give us water or a snack. We were to depart at 7.30 pm and it was about 10.30 when we took off. No dinner until much after that. Beef type noodle dish was terrible with about a teaspoon of beef in it. The breakfast sweet waffle with egg and sausage inside was horrible. An English muffin sandwich would have been much better. Food was the worst in all of our years of traveling the world.

The flight left 1.5 hours late but there was no information about the delay. My business class cabinet had two small children who cried much of the trip. Service seemed rushed.

I didn't like breakfast, I prefer plain rolls with butter.

Part of our luggage was lost and we had to wait 48 hours before receiving it. Also someone had to wait in the hotel to get it!!! Frustrating & disappointing

Could have a friendlier crew. The entertainment should be updated to be more current

One of the bathrooms was out of order, I paid $20 for the WiFi and it worked 20% of the time. And when it worked., it didn’t work well. The seats were tight, but that is something that cannot change. The flight was smooth but to know fault of the crew, the flight was delayed an hour leaving sfo. The crew was polite yet efficient.

Loved the staff in business class. Very attentive. Movie selection could have been better (updated)

Condor is a very good airline. If you’re transferring in Frankfurt, make sure to allow at least two hours in case your flight is delayed. You’ll also need to go through passport control and then go back through security to get on your next flight, so a window of 2+ hours is needed just in case.

The attendants were nice, but I was freezing the entire nine hours and so cramped. Please provide more blankets or make it known how to borrow a blanket for such a long flight. Even in already expensive economy class, people really need a bit more leg room and two more inches between seats to comfortably fly for 9 hours. Our family works very hard, but the extra expense of economy plus is just not in a lot of customer's budgets, and we still want to fly in equal peace and comfort. Please create future aircrafts that reveal reasonable care for us, the cramped- to- death customers more than the question of "how can we jam a few more human beings into this already cramped flight to impress our higher ups making a few more dollars. It's just Wrong. People need a reasonable amount of leg room and a blanket when the airline attendant said the extreme air conditioning could not be turned off. The food was tasty, but a bit more protein and less fluff would be appreciated. Thank you.

It was very good! Crew was very friendly, food was very good. I was on economy so the comfort was ok. Other than that, I would fly Condor again!

We had premium economy seats and the only difference from economy was legroom. Only one restroom for about 50 passengers was a little uncomfortable. Dinner was rather unpleasant but breakfast was good. Entertainment selection pretty good and you can use Bluetooth headphones. Flight attendants were okay.
