Convenient location at SJC. Good car and good price
Pros: Good price! and located right at the airport made it easy for pickup and return. no line and very helpful staff. Exact car we reserved was ready and clean. I would rent there again

Pros: Jason, the desk agent was very positive and helpful.
Cons: I was unable to pick up the car due to computers being down. Jason said they'd be up at 10 PM so I waited. After waitig 30 minutes, at 10 PM they still were not up so I decided to rent from another company. I think Payless should have a paper workaround so if their primary computers are down they can still rent cars.

Cons: The car type I reserved wasn't available upon my arrival. I was told that they didn't have the any of the small sedans available. There were only a SUV or a pick up truck. Very disappointing

No point in making a reservation
Pros: the guy at the desk was very nice and pleasant
Cons: they didn't have a car. I ended up renting from another outfit. I was never called in the end even though I left my number to be called when a car was available.

Pros: All good, wiper had to be fixed garage said they were not the right size.
Cons: No floor mats except front sit, had to have tires looked at were low pressure and tires looked worn out so we were a little afraid when it rained , did not want the car to skid.

Car was a little beat up
Pros: Fairly easy process
Cons: Car had a lot of scratches, dings, and chipped paint, so I had to carefully document everything.

Shortchanged on the Car Type Promised
Pros: The pick-up and drop-off were fine, though slow and "low-tech" compared to other rental companies.
Cons: The web-booking promised a Hyundai and the actual car (the only one available) was a Ford Fiesta. Sure, there must be some kind of "equivalence" in some database, but the car was far, far, far inferior to the one I had expected, based on the web-booking.

Worst rental car experience
Pros: The guy was nice. Just explained that they did not have cars. None of the companies had cars. First time
Cons: They did not have a car for me. Took a Lyft ride to the hotel. I was able to get a car the next day

Reservation not honored
Cons: Reserved a car at Payless car rental at San Jose International Airport (SJC). Arrived to pick up car and was told the car I reserved was not available. The only available car, I was told, would be an upgrade, one step up from what i had reserved, and I would have to pay for the upgrade. Ridiculous! I asked to speak to a manager and was told a manager was not available. I called the Payless 1800 number and when I was finally able to speak to a live person, I was told to speak to someone at the Avis counter because they own Payless. I spoke to someone at the Avis counter who went to speak to the agent at the Payless counter (not sure what she said). When the Avis agent returned, she told me that a Pyaless manager would come out and help me. I waited and no one ever showed. I ended just renting from a competitor. I have never experienced this problem from any other car rental agency. If the class of car I rent is not available, I'm given an upgrade without issue and at no extra cost.

Pros: Everyone was very nice and helpful. The Prius was great, loved driving it. Pick up and return were very easy and quick. Only issue was the large number of added fees causing the price to be $140 more than quoted originally.

Cons: Be cautious if you will cross toll bridge. They did not disclose to me what would be a $40 charge for using the toll payment device in the car. Nor did they provide me with the info card explaining how I could prepay the toll and avoid using their device. I am one of those scrupulously honest decent people and felt very poorly treated by the manager. Also, it appears they may have added on about 20% in additional charges above the quote I signed up for. Have never had problems with a rental before but have never used Payless before. 'Suggest you pay more and have a more satisfactory experience.

Worst car rental experience ever. Worst Rental car
Pros: NOTHING. One star is too many. I would rate them less than 0 if it were possible.
Cons: I didn't get to rent the car. I wanted to try a credit card I thought might not work first then use another if not. When it declined, I was informed that I was then locked out of the system for 12 hours and could not rent from them. Having made the reservation in advance when rates were low, it ended up costing me more than double and a delay of nearly 2 hours. I will never rent from Fox, and will tell every person and social media site I know of not to as well.

Pros: It was clean and comfortable.
Cons: When I got to the counter they had me sign for an amount that was WAY MORE than what was quoted to me on my reservation.

Cons: In checking the paper work, you are not sure what they will charge. I think I ended up paying more than what they offered. The car was dirty inside. The person who received the car seemed to need more training as he looked insecure and couldn't give guidance about much.

Pros: It was clean and easy to drop off.
Cons: The price that I was quoted with my reservation confirmation was MUCH LOWER than the price they actually charged me. If you send someone a confirmation number with a price, you need to stick to that price.

Customer service is a 100% bust at this company.
Pros: The vehicle itself drove well. More trunk space than expected.
Cons: The car was dirty - I had to meet customers in a filthy looking vehicle. I know the inside was not cleaned out very well because there was 2 - $1 dollar bills on the floor between the drivers seat and the door. Had the car been looked over for even 30 seconds, some lucky associate would have gotten $2. Getting the car was a pain also - when picking up, there was nobody at the booth. I had to got to a competitors booth to find out where to get my car. They pointed out these signs telling us to go down the hall - there was no contruction, just a need to confuse the patrons. From my first interaction with Payless to dropping off the car, I at most spoke 5 sentences to the staff - customer service and overall rudeness was pretty terrible. I travel regularly, and will avoid Payless moving forward.

Best customer service!
Pros: I messed up with the date of reservation and the guy in the office went beyond and above to help me out!
Cons: Maybe just try to clean the mirrors after you wash cars. Had to stop to clean them.

No Car Available
Pros: Nothing overall. Did not end up renting from them because they did not have the care available and did not honor the reservation.
Cons: When they did not have the car I reserved available, they said wait and maybe a car will show up. Sitting in the rental car terminal waiting for two hours I was not offered anything upfront by them. After an intense conversation, they offered a meaningless token credit of a few dollars which would not come close to making up for my loss. Seemed disingenuous in their attempt to solve the problem and offered meaningless platitudes. They even tried to say that since Payless is a cheaper option that I should have expected and planned for them not honoring the reservation. That was perhaps the worst part.

New car fleet needed
Pros: Customer service agent and car attendant were courteous and price of rental was great.
Cons: Rental cars smelled like smokers had driven them. After swapping one car for another I came to the conclusion that all their cars are this way. When I went to the location to pick up my car, most of them had the driver side window rolled down.

easy rental in San Jose
Pros: There was no line when I got there. The car was clean. Had a backup camera and side mirror warning indicators. A basic car with those 2 extra features made it nice.

Pros: Loved the features in the car-- especially the syncing of my phone and contacts with the monitor in the car. Very cool and tres convenient to scroll through my music using a dial on the center consul. I got into another car the next week and went reaching for the dial when I realized it wasn't there.
Cons: I think the person who was in the car before me smoked in the vehicle. There was a hint of smoke odor in the car. I have a very sensitive nose to cigarette smoke, most would never have noticed it.
