the red eye one is perfect to sleep on plane and get there early morning
SharonFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
The flight from the Hu to Los Angeles is about 5 1/2 hours. We use the fly a red eye. This typically works for us. I also see people with young children. Also do the red eye. Period however, if you are traveling with children get them really tired before they fly out so they will actually sleep. Make sure you upload movies on your phone cause sometimes the Wi-Fi is not working and that’s a long flight but nothing to do. Bring your favorite book. Do some off-line work
TomFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jun 2026
It’s a mess checking in through TSA. Lots of travelers but only 2 machines open to get through. The same goes for car rentals. Lots of renters but only a few desk workers. Plan to arrive early by about 2.5 to 3 hours early in Lihue
TheoFlew with Alaska Airlines-Mar 2026
If you’re flying First Class from Honolulu to Seattle (especially on Alaska), you can access the Hawaiian Airlines Plumeria Lounge before your flight. It’s a nice perk with good food, drinks, and a comfortable place to relax before departure. Also recommend pre-ordering your meal and boarding early to get your preferred option.
Verified travelerFlew with Delta-Mar 2026
bring snacks with you in case the crew cancel the service.
GreggFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Dec 2025
Be sure to pack food for your flight of 5+ hours.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Feb 2026
I flew direct from Kona Airport. It's small, friendly . But on the obverse side loading did take a very long. Take a direct flight to San Francisco; connection is a terrible experience in Honolulu International Airport.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Dec 2025
Eat your fruits and veggies before you attempt to board. The USDA doesn't allow out of Hawaii.
Thrinadh KumarFlew with United Airlines-Dec 2025
Flight is conjusted. Difficult to sleep. Carry pillows and sleep well beforeyou travel
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Dec 2025
Make sure you check on your flight before going to the airport
VictorFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Jan 2026
These flights often delayed so plan at least one day extra. If you must be in Sacramento on time.

Check in 24 hours prior and pay for luggage in advance to help expedite process
KeithFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Jul 2025
Check your seating assignment thoroughly when you check in to ensure it's the seat you paid for. Flights number, planes, seat assignment, departure times can change at moment's notice, so make sure your confirmed flight assignment in 100% correct!!!

Airports in Hawaii easier than home - not as many late night food options so prepare.
DuaneFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jun 2025
Check flight info before leaving for airport Bring substantial snacks
LeoFlew with American Airlines-Jul 2025
Avoid LAX if you can fly into other CA airport. LAX is very confusing. Our gate was adjacent to another that was boarding at the same time. We could not hear our boarding announcements. Almost missed our boarding group. Terminal 4 has multiple floors, the signs were okay, but a 3-D map is needed to fully comprehend your path. Very limited food options and super expensive restaurants with mediocre food (CrownLAX). Avoid LAX if your want a pleasant layover/transfer process.
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-May 2025
Make sure you give yourself time, our gate was a long walk down but noticed there was a shuttle option? Because of timing I decided to walk it, I wouldve liked to take a shuttle.
RobinFlew with Alaska Airlines-May 2025
Get to the Lihue airport 3 hours before the flight because there are multiple security steps and extremely slow security processing. Even if you have TSA precheck/global entry.
OlgaFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-May 2025
Get to the airport 1 1/2 to 2 before your flight. Airport to confusing with the process especially if it your first time in Kahului.
JánosFlew with Alaska Airlines-Apr 2025
Self check in is not indicated well if you approach Terminal 1 from Terminal 2 Parking. Go to the other side of the checkin counters.
MichaelFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-May 2025
Budget extra time if you're flying Hawaiian Air to get from the main terminal to the remote Hawaiian Air terminal.
CHARLESFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2025
Allow plenty of time to pass through agriculture and TSA security screening.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Dec 2024
Get there a couple hours early. TSA is not the best organized. The security line took us about 50 minutes to an hour.
GeraldFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Feb 2025
There is an agricultural inspection of carryon bags at the gate. Don’t try and bring home any pineapples.
SaovikFlew with Southwest-Dec 2024
No vegetables and fruits are allowed. The restaurant in the Kona airport opens pretty early.
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Jan 2025
Wish I had known there was a shuttle bus all the way home becaues the trains were jam packed with no chance of sitting or even moving to a place to hang on.
RoyFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Feb 2025
Would never have booked Hawaiian if we’d known Hon-Auck only flew twice a week. If you must, get to Hon the day before a flight elsewhere.
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Oct 2024
The gate we were at did not have a designated boarding area. This caused passengers to congregate in the middle of a walkway. The gate agent was clear in telling people to sit until their zone was called, but many did not listen. Whole fruits and vegetables are also not allowed, so don't pack those back to California. Bags were also weighed -- carry-ons could be just 25 pounds or less. This was enforced.
teresaFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Oct 2024
The flight is so short ! The hardest parts were returning our rental cars and getting our bags checked -nothing opened until 5 and we had a 6 am flight -we all got aboard but it was a challenge
StaceyFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Oct 2024
Give yourself more time than you would expect on a Saturday to get through check in. Also, the airport is hot, so be prepared.

Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Jul 2024
Check in early, give yourself a bit of time, and enjoy the flight. Lihue has a super small airport, so not much going on there.
HeatherFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Aug 2024

That they willlet you check your carry ons the gate sometimes
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Aug 2024
Do self check in. Much simpler print boarding passes at outside kiosk. I don't have that precheck but obviously they are trying to make everyone go that route bx we had to walk to the other end of the terminal for security once we checked in, instead of the much closer security check that was exclusive to precheck folks. That is frustrating.
RogerFlew with United Airlines-Jun 2024
According to HNL gate agent arriving UA 1805 from Denver Is “infamously” late, so don’t take the redeye UA 1806 turn around flight unless your prepared to camp out in the airport and possibly miss connections on the US mainland
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-May 2024
Don't use a small water bottle. Get a big one and fill it prior to boarding so you can keep hydrated better.

If you have a person in your party with a temporary ID (i.e. they were just issued one by DMV or their permanent ID has not arrived yet) be sure to bring additional identification materials. In our case an insurance card with their name on it was sufficient.

Seated at front bulkhead for a smidge extra leg room away from home and on flight back home. Away crew was very proactive about assuring our carryons had space close behind us (because no seat in front of us our personal items had to be in a small bin overhead). They actively required passengers place overhead luggage on its side so more items could fit in bins. Home crew made no such efforts. I had to struggle back rows to get overhead bags upon landing, no crew help then either, and some disgruntled passengers as I and others retrieved our bags. There was a system that worked pretty well. The home bound crew just didn't feel like working.

Southwest has inacted unfriendly customer policies like other airlines. Watch the fine print very carefully if you are having to alter flight arrangements. Rules are now complicated and very stilted to travelers sacrificing travel funds (unlike before where the simple, straight forward flight change policy was worth the extra premium for ticket price.) On the positive side, SW Flight crews are still wonderfully helpful.

Flight left on time and was early landing. Seats not comfortable and not enough space…

Flight left on time. Seat spacing is way too small…

Boarding process, crew were good. But the seats were so uncomfortable that was all I could focus on. I literally had to sit forward so that all 3 of us could fit in row. I will try to avoid Southwest in the future for any flights over 60 minutes.

Much better than the.last. flight on SW on Thanksgiving day

Boarding was quick. The flight itself was good. However, no charging ports for cell phones. Also, the food provided was just a few snacks. For a 5-hr flight, I would expect at least a sandwich.

Boarding was well explained and smooth. The flight was short, so there was no time for snacks. They did offer water or juice, though.

The flight was very short, 45 mins, therefore no snacks/drinks were provided; there should be a NA option for food and entertainment survey questions. Also, there were no charging ports onboard for cell phones. My experience was overall positive.

I love the fact that Southwest airlines has a direct flight from Honolulu to Las Vegas and Las Vegas to Honolulu. The only downside was flying on Southwest is they do not provide meals even if they charged you they do not provide meals. They do provide a free snack that consists of chips pretzels cheese and a cookie. They do serve free drink and if you book the premium flight then you get your choice of an alcoholic beverage. The seats are small so if you are not traveling with three people plan on someone sitting next to you.

Your seats do not recline more than 2”. That’s a shame on a 5+ hours flight especially overnight flight. Garbage airline

Delayed flight caused us to abandon bags in hnl or miss our United flight home. Awful

Had small delay to replace a airplane tire but overall it. Went well.

Flight attendants were kind. Until the plane arrived and had a slow taxi. I was on the tail end of the plane and informed the attendants I had a connecting flight. They didn't do anything to help me get off in a more timely manner. Nor did they contact my connecting flight to let them know I was on my way. By the time it was our rows turn my connecting flight across the terminal D gate to C gate was already boarding. I had to run the whole way through the terminal and hope I caught a train inntime. They were calling my name last call by the time arrived at the gate. Then my connecting flight ticket would not work and a new ticket had to be issued requiring presenting my ID again

Part of the first class package is luggage. We checked our luggage in easily but our luggage should be one of the first bags off when we land. On both flights this was not the case. The lounge in Kauai is awful. Food and drinks were excellent on the flight. Service was attentive. On the flight over we arrived 45 minutes early. Like last time the same thing happened in a previous flight. The problem both times was waiting in the plane for 30 minutes so that a spot to unload could open.

Flew first class. No headrest screens on either flight and the one flight had no foot rests either.

Good flight overall. Lots of bumps during flight but pilot kept searching for smooth air

We tried for days to use online Alaska Airline app we needed to know what Gate to depart from . When we got there we were given a paper boarding ticket with the wrong gate on it . We almost missed this flight . It caused great stress and caused a health side effect. The previous flights April 24 started hour late mechanical issues . We were not allowed to depart plane in time to get correct gate and missed our flight .

Couldn’t order food for the family because all the good food was unavailable. We opted for bringing something on with us. I also didn’t like that I had to have T-mobile for online movies. Stupid.

Had to buy a snack box as I am gluten free. They should be free in extra comfort. Food they provided was awful. Not enough water stops.

Flight delayed two hours , missed connection flight then connection cancelled- horrible experience with hotel

Omg the disaster at the security was on another level! “Go to this end, sorry closed now, go to that end”. Ridiculous! This took over an hour! As far as the airline was concerned although I booked nearly a year ago I couldn’t get my bag tag - stand in another 15 minute line or my seat on Hawaiian Airlines- 5 more minutes! Then my TSA status was denied. Like what the heck! Makes a person not want to travel with this amount of incompetence

The Honolulu Hub needs 2 to 3 times the amount of things to do as well as shuttles that transport to/from gates and terminals. Arriving from OCONUS locations; transferring to CONUS locations its a miserable experience. Fetching and re-checking bags, then returning to a gate across the airport take longer than any other large airport. If youre confused by what I mean, the process goes like this: Disembark plane Walk a mile to the main terminal Walk half a mile to baggage claim Wait 40 minutes for baggage Walk a mile to re-check-in baggage Wait 20 minutes for checking in those bags Fo back through the wrong TSA line because the signage is poor Almost miss the connecting flight because your gate is across the airport.

The checking was disaster, the crew wasn't behave well. It took us two hours to check in, after that thr line at the TSA was long, we barely make the flight. Bad airline

The crew were exceptionally nice and accommodating. My wife was tired after the flight from Haneda, Tokyo. They let her sleep and served her dinner later after she woke up, before we landed in PDX.

Horrible food and crew. Crew were laughing and talking loud while people were trying to sleep

I liked the Starlink WiFi but didn't like how they said they were the only airline to offer a free meal and it turns out to be just a standalone sandwich and then charge for snacks to go with it. Rather have the free snacks like Southwest, but have the option to purchase a decent meal for a 5+ hour flight.

Delayed and cancelled flights were hard and very stressful, both ways!

Canceled my flight within 24 hours, causing me arriving home midnight. Will never book Hawaiian airlines anymore

I like Hawaiian, it was great that they had good internet connection across the Pacific Ocean, thanks to Star Link satellites. The seating was comfortable, ( I was in economy ). Maybe I missed it, but I only got offered a beverage once. It was a nonstop flight KOA to SMF. I would take it again next time I go that way.

Both were great flights with wonderful pilots! It was not fancy, very simple. But boarding was super easy and the flight was smooth. Pick up in DFW was at corporate terminal which was the only confusing part for uber but if you call the uber driver and drop a pin they come right to it.

Totally great experience. Would definitely travel with them again. Thanks.

Both my fights got cancelled. Said mechanical issues but on flight tracker the flights came in and left! We were lied to!!

Was very impressed they called to confirm he would be on the flight. Great customer service!

We had a wonderful flight due to the care of our experienced pilot and copilot and the magnificent air views from our comfortable seats. What excitement to be in such a small plane with such magnificent around us.

Multiple time changes, then we left earlier than we were told.

Communication could be better but the staff and crew were over the top friendly and helpful, The flight itself was smooth.

flight was cancelled literally at 10pm the night before an early morning flight with hardly any time to reschedule. Will never book with kayak again.

Flight was cancelled twice. Moved four more times. Probably the least timely and poorly run airline I have ever experienced in my life. I have traveled hundreds of times to dozens of countries and this one takes the cake.

Excellent crew, good flight. Flight was delayed about 1 1/2 hours though.
