Insights shared by verified travelers who flew to Heathrow

Take early morning flights to adjust to weather-related delays.
PamFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2026
Book premium economy. The extra comfort is worth it.
MichaelFlew with Delta-May 2026
We like Delta, Alaska and American. Be prepared for a bit of a trek from your arrival gate to Customs and outside services. Heathrow doesn't rank high on my list of major airports.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
Heathrow is too gigantic to have less than 2 hours of layover time.
TaniaFlew with British Airways-Apr 2026
Heathrow airport has become one of the worst airports. Way too massive, like Amsterdam's, way too much walking & navigating. Better have 3 hours for connections and prepare to walk for HALF OF THAT time. LHR was 1 of the best airports 60 yrs ago. Don't expect it to stay same but now its a nightmare. For older folks I suggest using a less massive airport in UK and for American Airlines to do same.
DarleneFlew with British Airways-Mar 2026
Plan on a crazy, crowded experience in terminal 3! Find a resturarant to camp in to remove yourself from the pandamonium
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Dec 2025
Jst take one cashing bag no checked luggage-so much easier
MarilynFlew with British Airways-Feb 2026
Meeting a friend at Heathrow was difficult as there are many terminals so far apart. Access to the train was great and an easy way to get to the downtown area.
Verified travelerFlew with Iberia-Jan 2026
Buy your flight directly from the airline because the cancellation process is purgatory
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Nov 2025
Sit at the back near the toilets and the food service, you’ll get served quicker lol x
GeraldFlew with Virgin Atlantic-Jun 2025
Virgin Atlantic uses terminal 3. Much faster clearing customs than terminal 5
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Jun 2025
Make sure you do not need the transit visa.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jun 2025
Get a wheel chair if you have difficulty walking
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jun 2025
Pay for your bags at time of arrival and not through a third party site, they will rip you off!
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-May 2025
Heathrow has good signage. There are lots of people going to the same terminal waiting for the train. Be patient and when you have connecting flights choose a 2-hour layover.
LisaFlew with British Airways-May 2025
Make sure you have enough time in London if you have a transfer flight. I would recommend at least 2 hours.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Apr 2025
Be ready for checking luggage and going through security. We did and sailed right through.
Verified travelerFlew with Iberia-May 2025
Get to the airport early so you’re relaxed. Con yourself into believing it’s bedtime and try to sleep so that you can keep going all day when you get there. If you can afford more comfy seats it might be worth it - though I always have the cheap ones so I can’t say for sure. Try very hard not to. sit in the middle. I’m small and the guy next to me played games all night and didn’t care that he continually ( with every move) jabbed me with his arm. This was my first flight with Cheap Flights and it was far less convenient than other times I’ve flown overseas.
RadicalFlew with American Airlines-May 2025
Don’t put everything in your gate check bags. Make sure you have clothes in your carry on
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Apr 2025
Make sure you have plenty of time between flights if you are delayed.
Verified travelerFlew with Iberia-May 2025
Take a pillow you can sleep on and rest.
JamesFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2025
Try to avoid Heathrow! Not the most convenient to get into London unless you have a driver. Also, Heathrow needs better signs on where to go to exit and better wifi for foreign travelers.
TressaFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2024
Make your layover longer because you will need it for all the walking at Heathrow
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Feb 2025
Don’t take a flight if you sick, or if you have no choice prepare to stay covered with mask throughout the flight
DinaFlew with United Airlines-Jan 2025
Anticipate delays, prepare for long walks through Heathrow to baggage claim or for connections.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Eat well before boarding if you’re a picky eater.
TapanFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Great baggage policy in BA.. The worst part was experience at London Heathrow airport. Security was slow, too many people. Almost lost connecting flight even with 2 hours layover.
EllenFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Do not check your bag if at all possible, especially if you have a connecting flight. Your bag will not make it.
RachelFlew with American Airlines-Nov 2024
London Heathrow is absolutely disorganized. You need 2 hours between flights at a minimum.
HashemFlew with United Airlines-Jul 2024
I don’t think any airline has the best boarding. Maybe American Airlines has the most comfortable and up-to-date airplanes. Always go super early to any airport leave an apple AirTag in your bag always ask Agent if your chair and or seat will be properly working
CraigFlew with United Airlines-Jun 2024
Get to beginning of boarding group early. Bring as little on board as possible due to small overhead bin space.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Mar 2024
Be prepared to not have WiFi. The plane itself was a nice comfortable plane. The service from the crew is excellent. I always bring my own headset during a flight, so I would suggest doing that.
JordanFlew with British Airways-May 2024
Connections can take some time to figure out at LHR. They often don’t assign connecting gate till just before boarding. So be ready for that.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Mar 2024
Pack your own food if you have dietary restrictions and fly other airlines if possible
MichelleFlew with British Airways-May 2024
Make sure you separate your luggage tags from your tickets
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Apr 2024
Bring a sack lunch -- airport food was very expensive.
VaitsaFlew with British Airways-Apr 2024
Be early and pay attention to gate changes.
KariFlew with British Airways-May 2024
Always check to confirm your assistance is in system. No wheelchair waiting for me in London. Had no clue about airport or how to get around. Got lost easy
leaniepenneFlew with British Airways-Jan 2024
Dress appropriate for the season and be comfortable, arrive early for checking in case there are unexpected changes or delays.
AaronFlew with American Airlines-Dec 2023
Find a flight where you are allowed to choose your seats before the day of boarding for anything international.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jan 2024
Leave plenty of time if connecting in London as most connecting flights are in a different terminal which requires a bus or tram ride. Also if you’re not at the gate 30 minutes ahead they will not let you on the plane. Apparently this is a Heathrow not airline rule.
ShaunaFlew with British Airways-Dec 2023
I would suggest calling the airline to make sure that their TV screens work on the back of the seats, and if they don’t work that the entertainment option would work on your cell phones.
CurtFlew with American Airlines-Dec 2023
If you are connecting especially in bad weather pack spare clothes / travel sized toiletries in your carry-on.

The crew were efficient. The pilots seemed professional. It was a bit chilly in our seats. The sheet provided weren’t very helpful.

The Boarding process was great. Particularly since my wife and I require assistance. The flight attendants were amazing. We travel frequently; they honestly were a cut above. 😀

Plenty of leg room, temperature was great and staff was excellent. Would do it more often.

Passengers need to check in big baggage instead of bringing on the plane. That cause inconvenience for everyone. Otherwise flight was good.

Great. Very smooth. Plenty of information. However, wish they would give out a menu in advance of making a dinner choice like other international airlines. The flight attendant says chicken or pasta and there are details about ingredients or spices requiring the passenger to ask which requires the flight attendant to answer many times. So easy to solve this problem. P

All fine save for the abominable catering. Really gone downhill. We found it all inedible.

Late flight caused a missed connection, had to be put on a later international flight without my requested vegan meal.

Half the bathrooms assigned to economy were out of action

The crew members were great. The food was good. Entertainment was average - Could use a wider and better selections of movies and series.

Flight was cancelled after 3 1/2 hours. Support for rebooking was overwhelmed. Lost first class tickets and to fly economy.

This flight has a history of leaving late, however, I was pleasantly surprised that it was not delayed this day. The flight went smooth, except I was in a window seat and the wall and my feet were freezing. I found it difficult to sleep due to being so cold, I also was using 2 provided UAL blankets and could not get my feet warm. This was annoying, but I still made it there on time and safe.

I was very disappointed with my experience at the United Airlines baggage check. The representative was rude and unhelpful. I was required to remove approximately 1.5 pounds from my two checked bags, even though it was a very small amount over the limit. The interaction was unnecessarily unpleasant, and I expected much better customer service. I hope United will review this incident and provide additional customer service training to its staff.

Cree was organized and pleasant. Plane had good seating but as it’s a shuttle toilets hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned (eg. bins too full)

Some flight attendants were great others were cranky. Seats were very tight and sitting on an aisle was very hard as the carts and people walking constantly bumped shoulder and arm.

Although the flight was delayed the crew and the flight itself were very good. Couldn't fault anything and after the disappointment of being abandoned in the US by BA it was a welcome relief to travel with United

Liked fold flat bed. Didn’t like having no window. Didn’t like poor choice of food and being served dinner very late, hours after take off of a 7:40pm flight. Servers not friendly. Food horrible in business class.

The flight was heavily booked so boarding was a lengthy process. The FA’s were rather abrupt during this process but became more gracious as the flight went on. Breakfast (puffed pastry and chewy sausage) was pretty horrible but there was fruit and yogurt which they didn’t mess up. Overall it was fine.

Fight was delayed an hour due to operational issues ,then further delayed due to ground control for a total of about 1.30 hours. Salad was completely frozen and flatware was so cold you could barely handle it. Crew was friendly and professional and the flight was smooth. The aircraft was clean and well-serviced.

Waited for our plane from HNL so we didn't miss connection. AMAZING Service for that, then really clean plane. Nice airline attendants.

Horrible! I paid for a straight flight from Chicago to London. A week before trip it changed and now I had a connecting flight. Our flight was delayed an hour and a half because our flight crew was still flying in from CA. Forty passengers ran from one plane to the next. The next United Airlines flight was delayed two to three hours because of mechanical difficulties. They had to ready another plane which took time. I missed my scheduled excursion in London. 😢

Great staff great experience, made a 2 hour delay very bearable

I was my pleasure to fly virgin on my birthday for my first solo trip ever 🫶🏼

Overall, flight was excellent but check in was very slow for Premium Economy. Economy queue was shorter but we weren't allowed to use it.

Good overall. Cannot fault the airlines. I have had better entertainment systems before ie ice in Emirates but it was not too bad. Food was decent and staff were friendly.

Miami airport needs more thorough signage. It was a long walk from my transport point to the check in desk,

Flight took off an hour late. Had to stay on the tarmac for half an hour after landing. Both annoying.

The crew was very good. However, the equipment was a bit dated. Some of the electronics were not working. To top it, three bags didn’t arrive with me. Two of them were delivered a day later. I’m still waiting for the third bag, I was so looking forward to this virgin Atlantic flight, but, I am disappointed.

My only complaint is that the pocket in front of me was ripped and my things, like iPad and airline magazines, kept slipping to the floor.

Flight delayed yet again. Crew apathetic and unhelpful re affect on connecting flight.

I think Virgin is one of the best flying experiences, especially from/to the UK. The staff are so helpful and fun, the food is good, seats comfortable, goof entertainment and great value. Check in and boarding is pretty pain free. I also find that the other passengers are generally so kind and considerate than when I've flown other airlines.

Comfort in premium economy is worth it for long hauls especially on the 787-9P Dreamliner with the modern updates. The food was okay. All 4 of us selected the same meal, 2 of us had very dry hard to cut chicken, the other 2 were tender and good. The sides/salad/dessert all very good as far as airline food goes. Crew were very attentive. Will be hard to ever go back to regular economy!

Crew was great! Food sub-bar, tepid & flavorless. No snack options on trans-atlantic flight. Premium Economy seats ok, leg rest wouldn’t stay in place.

Entertainment system did not function. USB ports did not function. Wi-Fi did not function. Terrible trifecta…

Luggage did not make it onto my plane. Business seats were economy with empty row seat. Just horrible experience. Why would the company allow for transfers that don’t give employees enough time to transfer luggages??

For an long range economy flight I feel more space and more meal options need to be offered for flights over 5 hours

The check in agents in PHL and gate agents had to have been the rudest women that I have ever encountered; the agent weighing the bags at check in screamed continuously at all of the guests as did the woman at the gate.I have Executive Platinum status with AA and fly a lot with AA but these ladies were the absolute worst I had the displeasure to encounter!

B-class on an old plane with antiquated amenities and poor service. Landed in Rome w/o bag that didn’t make the connection (plenty of time in London). Bag will come to hotel NOT the day it lands but the following night!! Still waiting for bag…BA had nothing to offer in support and couldn’t even tell me their comp, told to submit receipts and then I’ll learn what is or isn’t covered.

It's a long flight and that is always difficult. I was comfortable and well. The movies available were great and the crew was good.

Premium Economy Good crew, good service, excellent food. Seat back screen just not bright enough.

Flight was delayed an no one cares, or try to help passengers to get the conexión.

Boarding from the SFO lounge is a big improvement. Although the first class dining room inside the lounge is becoming very crowded.

we originally had premium economy seats when we booked, but because we were forced to re-book because the first leg of our journey was delayed for several hours, we had to fly economy. Less room, less comfortable.

Flight was fine. We were in business class, so lie-flat seats were appreciated. Kids were in premium and said it was nice. Flight was delayed by 3 hours, so we missed everything we had planned in London the first day.

Spent unnecessary hours on phone calls to resolve small error on one of the passengers name... It was extremely stressful and time consuming... Not great... Also all 4 members of the family: 2 parents/ 2 teenagers were allocated separate seats (even separate floors... Not great...

Comfortable seats, good service overall. The food could’ve been a little bit better. The boarding process was slightly chaotic and in fairness, not all of that is related to the performance of British Airways.

The chairs were a bit tight even though I had extra feet space…2nd plane didn’t have entertainment and even though they said there was free WiFi-I believe the free WiFi wasn’t accessible unless u had some account set up….which I didn’t figure out

As I remember my last BA flight - mediocre at best. Uncomfortable with poor and minimal food and drinks. Screen broke shortly into flight so didn’t have access to entertainment either.

They gave away my business class seat. No explanation and no apology. Told me I had to take the downgrade if I wanted to get to India. Then no WiFi for 10 hours. Just ridiculous. We should not work with this company at Deloitte. They don’t know how to run a business.

Work being done at DIA made it difficult to find BA desk.

The airplane was refreshingly silent in flight than Airbuses, landing was very soft and secure. Food was also warm and light , not a big fan of curry though. Staff was polite, discrete, professional and helpful.
