Flights from Texas to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from Texas to the United States

American Airlines was pretty convenient and efficient. My recommendation would be to get a good amount of time to get situated at your terminal in case of any last-minute issues.
MaxeyFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
AUS is small enough to be handled easily. If your schedule works, it's better to start and end there than DFW or IAH.
RicardoFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
Enjoy the Dallas airport with its variety of restaurants and stores if you have to wait for long layovers.
LaneFlew with Delta-Jul 2026
When you are booking with Delta make sure you look at the features of each aircraft. Most Delta mainline planes have seatback screens and free WiFi, but they do have a couple aircraft you want to avoid if you would like these things. The smaller regional aircraft EMB-170/175 the CRJ 200, CRJ700, and CRJ900 do not have screens and sometimes they are not internet equipped. The only Delta mainline aircraft that doesn’t have seatback screens is the Boeing 717-200, but they usually have internet unless it’s not working. They also don’t have consistency in their first/business class product. It varies greatly, even among some of the same aircraft types so make sure you do your research before committing.’ To specific flights.
JosephFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
Pay attention and look out for last minute gate and terminal changes. I got stung by that, today’s flight changed gates and terminals four times.
BillFlew with United Airlines-Jun 2026
Usually, bags come out at LAX on baggage carousel #1 but it has happened several times they switch at the last minute to another.
MercyFlew with American Airlines-Jun 2026
People flying from Dallas to Champaign should always prepare their mindset to expect flights delays and adjustments due to weather or other technical emergencies.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
Be aware that it may take you an hour after you land before you arrive at your gate at ORD.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jun 2026
Keep checking on AA flight status frequently. Do not leave home till the flight status is confirmed.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Jul 2026
Make sure and have food with you for this long flight as the airline provides just snacks.
RicardoFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
It's a small airport so be ready for things to move much slower than bigger ones.
mizueFlew with ANA-Jun 2026
Give yourself 4-5 hours of wiggle room because this route is frequently understaffed and the gates are far enough apart to make 1 hour very difficult if any issue should occur such as staffing or weather delays. As soon as a flight boards the airline staff are MiA.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2026
Rebook before boarding or you may get stuck on plane and overnight in airport
DeepaFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
The TSA precheck feature is useful, and the security checkpoint to gate walk is around 20 mins, not too bad.
JoseFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
Try to get an early flight time because you never know what’s gonna change.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
Be sure to wear compression socks and stay active on long haul flights
RobertFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2026
Southwest boards more efficiently than the rest in my opinion. Boarding should start at the opposite end of the plane from the door and preferably window to door but instead it's front to back and takes forever when each passenger stows a bag and blocks the rest. I have seen the back to front work well in other countries.
MichelleFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2026
Lots of construction going on so plan accordingly and don't get too comfortable in one spot. All the times I've departed from Dallas, I had several gate changes prior to departure. And they aren't close by. :)
JonathanFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2026
There's a lot of construction. American Airlines flies out out of all the terminals so make sure you get dropped off at the right one and check to make sure your gate has not switched.
StephanieFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
download what you can work on in advance, don't rely on WiFi, download music, videos, etc and know that you'll wait over an hour before they start the beverage service
JaneFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
If you are a guest with disabilities ensure your travel agents know to do their job to handle your specials requests.

Check everything that you can ahead of time and then check again. Get confirmation for your add ons
JanaFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
Get there early. It is a long walk to the D1 gate.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Feb 2026
Depending on where one is staying, check SAT in addition to Austin for fares and schedules. It cost about $50 more to fly into SAT but it saved us an hour driving, and we didn't deal with Austin traffic.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Jan 2026
Always. Get there 2 hours before you fly and everything will go smooth. You won't be Russian. You can just take your time if you have any questions, you can get them answered at Agent. desk.
AgustinFlew with United Airlines-Feb 2026
Arrive early for your flight so you’re not rushing. And have plenty of patience with other people that are impatient.
MatthewFlew with Southwest-Jan 2026
If you have Pre-Check don't even worry about getting to the airport early.
WilliamFlew with Delta-Dec 2025
Make sure to confirm with the transport service which of the airports is indicated on the flight logs. I had booked my travel with a group, and assumed we were the same because of the overlapping takeoff times, but clearly this was a coincidence.
La-MekkaFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2026
Wish I would’ve know at DFW terminal D, use D30 to check your bags but D18!for regular TSA
DavidFlew with Air New Zealand-Jan 2026
Very limited space for carry on bags. Most had to be put with checked bags. Be ready for that
LouesaFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2026
The airport is large so allow plenty of time even if you have TSA pre-check.
JohnFlew with Delta-Jan 2026
Choose DFW instead of DAL if looking for a plane that is better equipped.
WaleFlew with United Airlines-Dec 2025
Make sure your electronics are charged before boarding, the plane doesn’t have power outlets
FraxysFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2026
Bring your own snacks or sandwich for dinner in the plane.
DionFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2026
Make sure you eat a heavy meal before boarding the flight.

Arrive early to the gate. Seems boarding is early.
JulieFlew with British Airways-Nov 2025
Be sure to make sure you give yourself plenty of time if you are connecting through Dallas airport - there are sky trains that take a couple of minutes to get to the right terminal, and it's a large airport.
ConnieFlew with Delta-Nov 2025
Delta has an incredibly long walk to connecting flight from MSP to RST.
MikeFlew with American Airlines-Jul 2025
If you are connecting through Dallas from International flight expect a long transfer to go through security a second time.

Check in weight limit is 40lbs, not 50lbs
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-May 2025
In Austin, be prepared for long TSA lines. A lot of construction going on. It’s a busy, busy airport. Portland is one of the most beautiful airports. Very up-to-date new look and equipment. There’s still some construction going on but overall a pleasant experience.
Chao-HsiangFlew with Frontier-Mar 2025
The south terminal is under construction. Get to the airport earlier.
LaneFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2025
Fly out of Houston Hobby right now. All the construction going on at Houston Bush makes arrival and checkin a nightmare. Almost every flight must checkin at Terminal C regardless of what gate/terminal you actually depart out of. I missed this note on the United app and took 2 elderly people traveling with me to terminal A to checkin and had to lug them around the subway underground to get back to C and that took forever.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-May 2025
The Dallas airport is very confusing. Be careful what shuttle bus you get on and leave super early because the traffic is awful in
PiperFlew with American Airlines-Dec 2024
Dress according to comfort on plane rather than either destination! Know that Palm Springs airport is outdoors (and NOT cold) so prepare for that too
DavidFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2025
Southwest boards a bit better. Also you get checked bags free.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Dec 2024
Bring a neck pillow and if your over 6 ft tall spend the money for exit row. Other customers are not curteous
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2025
Dallas is huge and has gate changes quite frequently so be sure to set alerts and notifications for your flight.
Verified travelerFlew with Southwest-Dec 2024
Get to a VERY crowded airport early. TSA Pre doesn’t help much, as everyone has it.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2025
If you have a connection flight check the monitors, the gate will more then likely change.
RobertoFlew with Frontier-Dec 2024
If making connections, study the Orlando airport layout. The airport design is a mess.
AlcideFlew with United Airlines-Nov 2024
Lafayette has received a big update so the airport is great now. Just prepare for weather related delays.
SamFlew with Southwest-Sep 2024
Easy flying with Southwest, Hobby (HOU) and San Antonio (SAT) airports are small and easy to navigate.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Sep 2024
Tru and get a direct flight through United or Alaska so you have no transfers!!!
SundereshFlew with American Airlines-Sep 2024
Check standby options on earlier flights. There are many between the two destinations.
HaleyFlew with Alaska Airlines-Sep 2024
Check in early so you don’t have to sit in the last row.
SundereshFlew with Delta-Nov 2024
Take advantage of the lounge if you can
KimFlew with Frontier-Nov 2024
Bring water, snacks, and pack serious phone chargers w preloaded movies to your phone. You will have to hold your device up to your face because there is nowhere to put your devices for watching. Also bring back and butt padding because there is no padding in the seats. If you’re flying out of Austin’s South Terminal older ones will need to be individually wheeled up the ramp by a crew member so be prepared for that. It holds up the entire line because the empty wheelchair then has to come back down the ramp to make way for the line again.
JoseFlew with United Airlines-Sep 2024
Make sure you have enough time before your next connection. Houston airport is big.
RolandoFlew with British Airways-Jun 2024
Pay for the upgrade to be bumped up in an earlier group. Makes finding a spot for your carryon bag much easier. Also, please make sure any purse is packed into your personal bag. When they say a carryon and 1 personal item they mean it. Save yourself stress and holding others up by sticking to it.
SoniaFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2024
Leave at least 1.5 hours between flights as Dallas is HUGE!
PiperFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jul 2024
Best to fly direct. The boarding process was extremely smooth
TJFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2024
I can be quite cool onboard, so just because you are traveling from heat to more heat be aware that the aircraft can be chilly.
kabirFlew with American Airlines-Aug 2024
Dallas Fort Worth is a large airport. Be sure to go your terminal if you have as connecting flight.

Dallas is a very spread out airport, jus make sure that you have enough time to transfer during layovers. Also all the restaurants close fairly early

At HOU airport, gates 1-4 are to the right of security which is separate from the rest of the gates.

AdamFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2024
My ride dropped me off at the time my flight was boarding and I had to check a bag. I thought there was no way, but I was able to check my bag and get through security super fast because they were both just a few steps away from my drop off. Made my flight with time to spare. Just don’t get stuck in traffic.

No wifi, seems to be very common with Southwest currently. Everything else was normal.

Flight was delayed by 2 hours, meaning that a flight to Dwnver which should have arrived at 11pm came into the airport at 1 am. Made for a very long day.

Great job! My family doesnt fly often but we felt safe 100%

Flight was constantly delayed with significant changes in time, it was supposed to get to Colorado Springs at 8:30 PM but it got there after midnight.

I don't know why flying out of Sarasota requires two plane changes.

First time I've had to use the disabled accommodations. And I could not have had a better experience with Southwest, i was having trouble getting from one terminal to another due to my heart failure. And the next thing I know a Southwest agent had made sure. I had a wheelchair at all my flights. Can't thank them enough.

The new seat assignment thing is wierd. If you don’t pay for a seat they always assign you a middle seat regardless of how many people are on the flight. Idk… the new company that bought Southwest is trying to make it more profitable, but I’m just not seeing it. The flight attendants aren’t having as much fun anymore. It just feels like the airline is slowly dying. IMO. We shall see if Southwest is the next Toy’s R Us.

The Air hostess were very rude on my flight from Houston to Austin . Their regular communication itself felt a they are shouting at people.

Plane was late. Zero service for 2+ hour flight and it was not that bumpy.

I have roller bag with food and medication told me I couldn't bring on my 2nd flight today. 15 years flying with SW never an issue with that bag.

overall the crew onboarding and providing service during our flight was great; they were friendly and helpful. I said ok to the entertainment because there was none, but the crew explained why which was very helpful. I am a diabetic and the type of snacks are not diabetic friendly (full of carbs and sugar). However, I am always prepared because I know the catering is for the larger population.

No tv. No free wifi. They need to ipgrade these planes - especially on a 2 hour flight.

delta wifi wouldn’t work boarding was not in sequence flight crew spent most of their time on the phone with the lights off pretending no one wanted or needed anything

Flight was 2 hr. delay, making me miss my connection to my final flight home to Roanoke. Now 12:38am in the morning and I just got the first available ticket at 5:30 pm tomorrow evening. Sleeping in the airport.

I am a die hard Delta flyer, but they missed it on this flight. It was on their very dated 717-200 aircraft, which I knew when I booked it so I knew it wouldn’t have seatback screens. However, the internet was awful and it wouldn’t even send texts a lot of the time, much less even connect to the delta app. It was also very hot while in the air, which never happens. What was even more disappointing is that the crew only gave me cheezits and a beverage, even though I was in Delta Comfort. The main cabin fare gets these items. I didn’t get any kind of improved snacks and that was unacceptable. The crew wasn’t very visible at all either. If this was my first delta flight, it would be my last. I am just going to assume it was a one-off flight.

flight was delayed 4+ hours. there was really no understanding of why? weather? the last hour of delay was post boarding. pilot seat was broken. was that the real reason? nonetheless, long day of inconveniences.

Flight got canceled 4 times, missed my connecting flight due to delays, have to wait to go home tomorrow

We departed and landed early which was a nice surprise. The boarding process was slow.

Arlene was a great flight attendant. I also liked how one of the other flight attendants gave us a heads up about snacks and asked everyone to remove their headphones when it was their turn to order. Good idea.

The WiFi was not working. That made for a long flight.

Really old place. Not as clean as it should be, tray tables needed better cleaning. The items, trays and some other items need to b6 engineered. Anything task you or crew may do is incredibly load, seriously engineer for quiet smooth, easy. Just opening and closing the tray table is actually dangerous and can easily injure a finger. I'm sure it happens as it happened to me! First time I used United and likely will be the last!

I’m an EP on AA every year for more than a decade but this was a very pleasant and surprising experience. Clean and sizable plane for HOU to CHI. 5 row first class. And excellent food in first class the steak option was really good. Your flight attendants even better. Seat 5A

The experience with United Airlines was excellent; however, the experience with Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH) was horrible. Although our flight departed from Terminal B, we had to go through security in Terminal C and then get on a train for travel to Terminal B. Additionally, there was significant walking required to get to the boarding location.

Unbelievably smooth boarding at IAH and the flight attendants were top notch.

We flew business fares. Was amazing. However, the check in didn't offer business fares preboarding which is less hectic. 8/10 due to this. Staff compared to Canadian carriers go above and beyond. Would gladly fly United again.

Comfortable seating POS to IAH. Food options were satisfactory. Good seat from IAH to ANC. Food options could be better.

Always pretty good as far as I see it. Staff was friendly and process was quick to get on and off.

There could have been better food options in economy on the long 7hr trip from IAH to AM.

It was terribly delayed with zero support from united airlines. I reached at 1 am in the night. They did not provide any option to change the flights.

Awful. Delayed flights, missed connection to Toronto. Hotel vouchers were for already booked hotels x3. Giant waste of my time

The first leg of my trip from Dallas to CLT was smooth from check-in to landing. The snack, biscott cookie really needs an upgrade. Even if the upgrade is a choice of the cookie or pretzels.

Great for a small Commuter. Quiet and relaxing. Seats were better than most.

The plane was late getting to Ontario by half an hour which makes it inconvenient when you have people waiting for you.

I paid extra for what I thought was leg room and it certainly was not. I had a very cramped experience on my flight from Dallas to Detroit and it was the section right behind first class section. I did however have an amazing flight from Atlanta to Dallas on the initial outbound flight.

The plane left late and there were four gate changes. Fortunately they were all in the same terminal. The crew was truly outstanding. There were only nuts to eat due to the very short flight time. Beverages were as expected.

Flight was delayed 2.5 hours at the start. They kept saying mechanical issues and changed gates several times. Then when we landed, they kept us on the tarmac for 1 hr because they didnt have gate staff to pull out a bridge. Its insane that they cannot have 2-3 people to operate a bridge for a flight with 100 people? Then the baggage claim, bags took over 45 minutes to arrive. All in all, I was scheduled to arrive at 6:30 PM local time and I didn't leave the airport till 10:40 PM local time. Its a shame and makes me never want to fly American again.

We landed slightly early but then sat in holding area waiting for our gate to clear out for about an hour, so technically we arrived one hour late at the gate at ORD. The airport may be partially responsible here, but regardless of who is responsible, it was a bad experience to be so close yet unable to get off the plane.

Terrific flight, had a good seat. Flight crew was wonderful, boarding was drama free. And we arrived early.

Delayed because of waiting for some passengers who were delayed from their original time, they never made it to our flight. Late arrival causing logistic issues. Terrible all cause by waiting for someone who was not on time when waiting only benefits the airline

I understand that the plane is a regional jet, but American Airlines can do better! They have been operating these planes for 25 years by now. The seats are uncomfortable, and both boarding and deplaning are painful and waste a lot of time due to carry-on baggage.

There weren't enough employees at check in took awhile to get bags checked. There wasn't a wheel chair for me, I was sent to someone who turns out to work for a different airline, if My flight hadn't been delayed I probably would have missed my flight as it was, by the time I arrived at my gate, they started boarding in about 15 minutes. I don't know who took me to my gate, definitely was not the normal people who take passengers to the gate. I'm guessing she may have been in a management position. I wish I knew her name, she went beyond to help me. With that said everyone was kind, and were doing the best they could. So, I choose to say it was an Adventure, stressful start, but good. In the end went well. The situation was not only difficult for passengers but the employee's.

My flight was originally from SAT to MCO connecting from MCO to ORD. We got diverted to ATL and than Frontier staff there was sooo un helpful first they said they couldn’t give us any accommodation since our flight first got delayed that cancelled and now it’s 221am and I am still in ATL since they said they need to create a new flight my final destination is ORD and I have been delayed twice and cancelled. With no real help the frontier app didn’t work no email updates over all such a horrible experience

Gate not determined until I got to the airport - hard to plan the trip to the airport.

Very well recently! Frontier is improving and less harrassing customer on luggages! Positive!

Terrible. The canceled my entire flight when I requested a refund for a trip frontier canceled trip one way.

i was unable to check in the flight. refund requested

We were delayed three times ,and that destroyed my plans, and reservations

Book with frontier airlines with the mentality that they'll cancel your flight, kick you off and lose your luggage. Anything besides that is a win. Compare prices with other airlines (to include luggage) and if frontier is still worth it, book it but know all of their policies.

The reps working at the airport counter were dumber than a second coat of paint.

Landing in terminal 2, but my luggage is terminal 3. We (and others) were looking for it in terminal 1. We probably missed the crew broadcast, but the communication could have been clearer for non native (or elderly) passengers.
