Flights from Washington to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from Washington to the United States

Alaska Air is very efficient & on-time so allow enough time to get luggage, go thru Customs & Immigration, & long security lines. Terminals in SEA are readily accessible by trains but more signage is needed. Fortunately, Information booths are everywhere & are manned by very helpful staff.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-CLEMar 2025
If you have a rental car, give yourself time to catch the shuttle to the airport. Also be aware traffic is awful and will often be standstill on the way to the airport.
Verified travelerFlew with Korean AirSEA-PDXApr 2025
Alaska airlines is more convenient and better than Delta when flying from SEA to PDX. They have many more flights and great customer service.
AngelFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-ABQMar 2025
Fly into a different city with more options for departure times. Not to have a six hour layover.
ShuraFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-BURApr 2025
Don’t . Delta has all the gates together for easy transfers and much more food and beverage selection

Regardless of the shortage it has, yet Alaska Airlines is the best

Again snacks unless you want to eat prior or order ahead of time for flight. Wear layers as usually warm or as my case a little cool.
RobertFlew with United AirlinesSEA-SFOMar 2025
If you’re picking up a rental car it’s not very clear that you have to take the train. Signage can be improved at SFO.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-PSPDec 2024
Be courteous of your fellow travelers. Remember the carry on baggage rules. Keep your jackets out of the storage bin on full flights. Don't move other people's luggage from one bin to another. Step out of the isle as quickly as you can. Be sure you're in the seat(s) assigned to you.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesGEG-PDXFeb 2025
My advise to customers is to make sure there’s at least 1 hour during layover as delays and gates can add to stressful circumstances as you rush to meet your connecting flight

Paine Field is extremely convenient for my purposes. I wish Southwest flew there, because I have a lot of miles to use up.
TonyFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-ATLDec 2024
Delta, definitely Delta. Stop charging for checked baggage, when you ask people to check it for free at boarding.

I wish that I had known how to connect with the wi-fi; I had set up an acct almost two years ago. Not information that I remembered. Bring healthy snacks if diabetic. Wear compression socks if needed as it is a long flight. If older and wearing pull-up depends be aware that it will set off TSA alarms as will foil packs of medications in your luggage! If experiencing any difficulty with walking or shortness of breath...ask for a wheelchair ...it made a world of difference in Atlanta!
Verified travelerFlew with Qantas AirwaysSEA-LAXNov 2024
Alaska and Delta by far have the best service from Seattle to LA, with many flights a day. I honestly prefer Alaska in general, but they codeshare so much with American, whom I generally loathe, that I have been switching my flying to Delta simply to avoid American. American themselves run 2 CRJs a day via SkyWest to LA, and United runs one or two flights as well. The American service is what it is — I only took it due to a vastly lower price for a Qantas ticket to Australia.
ReidFlew with United AirlinesSEA-LAXOct 2024
SeaTac does not have a very good or equitable system for security lines. First class passengers don’t have a TSA precheck option, while there are only 2 TSA precheck lines on opposite sides of the terminal. Highly recommend getting TSA plus Clear, as the airport heavily favors this combination, with each section of the terminal having one of these options. I almost missed my flight because the only TSA precheck line was about 45 minutes long.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-MCIOct 2024
TSA lines in Seattle can get very long early in the day. Also, plan to return your rental car early since you have to take a shuttle bus to the terminal and those lines can get long early in the day, too. Currently there is construction in the North Terminal, so be prepared for moving around barriers. The day I flew out, the escalators were not working.
BarbFlew with DeltaSEA-MSPSep 2024
Try not to get to the airport too early. We came off of a cruise and had a 6 hour wait. Unlike MSP, SEATAC didn’t have free WiFi. But, McDonald’s did. And the three hours before the flight we used the Delta Lounge which is always amazing.
DanaFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-MKESep 2024
That was my first time flying Milwaukee to Seattle & vice versa. I think we choose a good airline. Seattle’s traffic & airport is busier than Milwaukee so get there at least 2 hours early. Download & keep an eye on the Alaska airline app for flight info updates.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-HNLSep 2024
Bring your own food or eat before boarding. Get to that airport 3 hours early for a domestic flight, the TSC screening line was 45 minutes long and if you have to walk to the other side of the terminal you might have to run.
BrandonFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-INDOct 2024
Arrive to the Seattle airport much earlier than you would the Indianapolis airport. This might be obvious, but the Seattle airport is much larger than the Indianapolis one.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-CVGSep 2024

Tight interline connection at LAX - barely made the flight. Directions from AS arrival gate to separate AA commuter terminal for AS codeshare flight connecting to TUS would have been nice.
JoanFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-JFKNov 2024
SeaTac should add sand to the painted floor from the terminal to the light rail. It is VARY slippery when wet and the northwest (Seattle) is known for rain.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-ELPOct 2024
It’s a long flight but very comfortable. Too: don’t ask for decaf coffee. Would have liked better choice of snacks. Otherwise it was a fine flight.

Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-CMHSep 2024
Seattle airport is a nightmare. Too much construction leading to confusion where to go and poor signage. Really crowded airport and waiting areas. Trying to get large fully loaded suitcases on escalators is ridiculous. Someone is going to get hurt. Columbus airport much easier to navigate and less crowded.
GregFlew with Alaska AirlinesBLI-SEANov 2024
Now that Southwest doesn't fly in and out of Bellingham Washington there are no good options to Seattle. You're best off driving or getting a shuttle, it's much more likely you'll get to Seattle near the time you think you will. Flying is just not a dependable option anymore.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesEAT-SEANov 2024
You are restricted to only flying Alaska from Wenatchee and the schedules of the flights to and from Seattle are few and far between. Either you leave super early or late afternoon.

I generally fly United or Delta out of South Bend, IN into Seattle or wherever I'm going. I have no issues with Alaska. I only use Alaska when flying with my family from the Seattle area back to Chicago O'Hare and then we drive to SW Michigan where I live. Alaska Airlines has a beautiful new terminal at SeaTac as well. A good airline. I do like planes that have screens on the back of the seats.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-BOSJul 2024
Generally Alaska Airlines have very friendly and helpful people in my experience. They don’t have TVs in all planes so make sure to download their app if you want entertainment on the plane.

When flying from Seattle to Denver, be ready to take our any electronics and put them in separate bins when going through security. You will also most likely have to take off your jacket as well. During our flight back the flight randomly changed so be on the lookout in case that happens to you! It was by chance that I checked my ticket and saw that the gate changed last minute.
ElaineFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-PHLMay 2024
If you have any metal in your body (e.g., spinal fusion screws) make sure you get in the line for the TSA security screening booth that makes you stand on the yellow marks with your arms over your head. I don’t know is it exist on Boise airport, but Lufthansa and United are good and even for a huge distances like to travel between continents, they fly smoothly. Alaskan hurry up to come faster, but faster it can not be safer, you can experience all the shaking and suddenly blood pressure from going suddenly fast to high altitude and who have a heart problem or pregnancy put himself under a big risk flying with Alaskan airlines.

I made a mistake. Read what I wrote in the flight from Dulles to SEA. The negative experience was from SEA to BOI. Total garbage. Wont do it again.

Need to get on train for second flight it’s much nicer when all the gates are together for obvious reasons

Cramped, crowded aircraft. Poorly organized boarding. Tasteless crackers to eat. 40 minutes late. A standard US air travel experience.

Made us check our carry on,even though there was plenty of room because they didn't check with the flight crew. Also boarding was 40min late, due to the plane being on the wrong side of the airport. Also their app didn't record my tsa precheck

Would not mind having movie options an available like Delta, but is not necessary. Did not have food, so cannot appropriately rate that section.

Three hour flight so snacks and basic drinks unless you pre buy as usual. Didn’t do my emtertainment as was tired after 23 hours of travel. You have to use your own device on US flights if travelers aren’t aware so if you only use your cell phone that can be small. Crew are great.

Awful. We got the last seats and they don't recline. We've been on this horrible journey since 6am and won't get to our destination almost a full day later. Oh and no food, either. Never again.

Flight was smooth, but the overhead bins were not deep enough to stow bags vertically and we ran out of room - even with 8 passengers voluntarily gate-checking their bags.

An uneventful flight is a good experience although one of the pilots gauges wasn’t working right so we had a half hour delay—no one can foresee that.

Plane was delayed and got me in past bedtime. But more importantly, my tsa precheck number wasn’t on my ticket so had to deal with the general line. Oh well, guess the delay helped that situation.

Delta is my preferred airline. I've traveled with them for years. On time in most cases, good communication, easy to use app. Most planes are pretty nice. I was on a CRJ 700/900 however, which was pretty badly aged inside and needed a refresh. No infotainment, unreliable wifi, best to download before boarding or bring a book. Food choices are really just snacks on this flight, nice variety but about what you'd expect. Great staff and prompt in departure and early arrival too. Overall quite satisfied.

Crew was friendly Love the entertainment in the seat head rest.

Delta flight was on time, seats were comfortable, and crew was nice.

This had nothing to do with Delta… The flights were on time and flawless. The service was excellent. We purchased seats in (aisle/middle) comfort plus since this was a cross country flight. Unfortunately, the woman seated at the window was 300+ pounds and, as might be expected, covered up about a third of the middle seat also. there was absolutely nothing that Delta could have done about that… I just don’t know what the answer should be. If you purchase a seat, you should should be able to use the entire seat and not just the portion that someone else is not sitting/oozing in. Disappointing…there should be something that could be done….I'm just not sure what solution could be.

Delayed take-off. Very small plane so very scary with lots of bumps during the flight. Would never fly Delta on short flights in small 80 seaters plane again! Felt relieved when landed.

The worst part was I was NOT allowed in the lounge even though I was holding a first class ticket and have a premium American Express card. I have flown Business or First Class with many airlines. Delta is the ONLY one who does not extend this courtesy to anyone except people who hold the very expensive American Express card. As a result, I won’t fly Delta if I have any other choice.

A little bumpy ride . No food was being provided due the the turbulence. That was ok it was a short flight to my standards.

Simply outstanding. Their new lounge for Delta One customers is a cut above the rest.

The Dekta Rep that checked us in was great. She's very personable, pleasant, and can tell she enjoys her job.

The plane was old with small storage areas that had problems closing/latching and not enough storage for everyone, and worn, damaged seats. Service was great but feel a little unsafe on such well used planes.

The departure gate was changed from C1 to B18 but it was never announced at the C1 gate nor did I receive any email or text message or phone call about the gate change. I was in a window seat. In the other two seats next to me were Mr. Rotund and Ms. Rotunda, a youngish couple. Just the two of them should have booked three seats. I was smashed up against the wall and window for five hours. Overall, I'd say my flight sucked. Wouldn't you?

I couldn't get checked in 24 hours before either leg of my flight. I tried both my Alaska and Hawaiian codes on both apps.

We moved from the international terminal to a new location. I think there are still some bugs to work out . We didn’t receive check in notification and had to scramble to find it but i think it will work out

I'm was impressed with their service. Everything was great

All in All a great experience. Cost of luggage sucks … first time I ever had to pay for luggage. Otherwise the check in counter was awesome, the gate clerks were great and the Stewards & Esses were the best.

As my daughter was boarding the flight they pulled her from the line and told her, after she had checked in and checked a bag, that she could not board the flight due to a fraud flag on the debit card used for the ticket purchase. The personnel would not allow me to speak to them, saying I had to take it up with customer service that was not present. They tried to get my daughter to purchase another ticket on the spot or get out. The customer service personnel were insistant that the personnel at the gate be on the phone which they would not allow. Would not accept payment from three different accounts and did not resolve the issue. Many conflicting reports about the source of the problem, the fraud department is uncontactable. The only good thing to come of it was checked bag arrived. Our family will not be using Hawaiian Airlines. Ever.

Great staffing. Terrible food. Please do cold sandwiches or salads. the "hot pickets" are terrible.

Love Hawaiian you can’t go wrong, still provides you good drinks and little snack at the end

No tv’s. Had to walk 45 minutes to connect to next flight. Couldn’t get dinner as a result. Ended up eating pretzels until I felt sick.

Not so good. The takeoff was aborted after reaching 100 knots due to a problem with the front tires. I do commend the pilot for a quick decision and preventing a potential disaster. We returned to the gate to put fresh tires on the front. Our flight was delayed for over 3 hours. The rest of the flight was okay. We were reimbursed by Hawaiian Airlines for only $50. Not too generous
