Flights from Michigan to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

JenniferFlew with Delta-Aug 2026
The name of the game with Detroit AND Baltimore particularly in the summer is to keep a very very close eye on the weather and begin to anticipate delays. We are traveling to Detroit weekly for the next 5 months, and almost every week we encounter at least one delay. Realize that while Detroit airport has airline clubs etc. BWI does NOT. Passengers who want club access at both ends should fly out of IAD instead.
Verified travelerFlew with Delta-Jul 2026
Check a map and take the train between gates. Signage is terrible. Detroit has allowed restaurants and boarding to spill out into the concourse, so can be a recurring narrow struggle through crowds walking between gates. If you see food you want, get it. Not as many food options, and not many healthy food options, as it would appear along concourse A.
AndreaFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2026
I chose Spirit because it was a lot cheaper. Expect a very uncomfortable seat for basic economy. Bring something to do because there is no back of the seat entertainment screen.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2026
Bring your own food, drinks and entertainment (movies, books, crossword puzzles, etc)
AngeliqueFlew with Spirit Airlines-Nov 2025
Know there is a shuttle to exit or get baggage
Verified travelerFlew with Frontier-Jun 2025
Don't purchase vouchers with connections on the cheaper flights (such as frontier or Spirit), you're bound to have a delay. middle or more expensive airlines are more reliable, comfortable, and have consistent pleasant staff working.
LisaFlew with Frontier-Mar 2025
For short flights Frontier is okay but pay the extra money to be comfortable if your flight is longer.
MollieFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2025
You have to weigh your bags yourself, there is no assistant to help check bags like on delta, so it takes longer and is more of a pain. Long lines, count on an extra few minutes. Other than that, everything was fine.
FelipeFlew with Delta-Jun 2024
Make sure you know where you are going it’s a big airport… if you fly delta you can ride the tram inside to get to your gate if it is far away.
MichelleFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2024
Bring water on board and charge your devices in advance.

Show up extra early, especially if you are flying with kids. There are no employees around to assist you.

The trip to Harrisburg from Detroit was extremely uncomfortable because of heat

Great quik boarding, friendly gate agent and crew. Let early

We sat at the gate for over 30 minutes, with no indication as to why

All was fine. Small plane so no food or entertainment.

Very aggressive at the boarding area of only allowing one person passed a line/ sign

Delayed 7 hours Crew and employees were nice Extra long flight but at least we got in

I love how the flight crews are now saying what the weather will be like, when we can expect to be able to get up and use the restrooms etc. I have to say also that our flight crews this trip were incredible - fast and courteous - and somehow managed to do the service even on these short flights with a few bumps. The only reason for an ok rating on entertainment was because these short flights are on planes without seatback displays but that's ok because I just download shows on my iPhone beforehand.

Our flight from Detroit to LaGuardia on Thursday 8/20 was delayed from 555 to 910 due to storms and a ground stop at LGA. It’s never fun to be stuck at the airport but I thought the desk crew and captain handled it well and kept us informed. I especially liked how they referred to us as their “LaGuardia family.” I am a loyal delta customer and this is one of the reasons why.

The meal tray was not usable it was completely uneven

New Max 10, first class seats have been shrunk. End of a 20 hour journey, it was United not Lufthansa, just glad to get home

Worst boarding experience, flight extremely delayed causing super tight connect and deplaning was a disaster as ppl were pushing and shoving to get off. Then after flying over 8 hours had to get off a job to next flight. Limited beverage service in Business class (water or white wine) no food. The plane was very cold (temperature) so uncomfortable

Stored my cloth purse under seat in front off me as instructed. When I retrieved it, half of it was soaked, along with everything inside it. I don’t really know how that could have been prevented because the area did not look wet, but I was not happy about it.

This flight is a quick way to get to Chicago, but a bit expensive.

We got delayed three hours and nobody thought to have the bathroom fixed while we were sitting waiting to board? took a full hour to have maintenance come and check it off. Had to shut the bathroom down twice so that the pilots could go to the bathroom. Everyone missed their connections.

Not good - outbound flight was delayed and missed my connection even though I got to the gate after running through the airport - the agent would not let me on because the door was closed (flight had not left). There was no notification from United - overall experience was very disappointing. Additionally, I was downgraded from first class to coach on the alternative flight

I liked that the flight was nonstop from ORD to CIU for $200 round trip.

Some sort of compensation for missing work because of a cancelled flight that was United’s fault

I was told we'd have a hot breakfast option in first class, so I chose not get a hot breakfast. It was a very strange meal, but the fresh fruit was very good quality. Service was excellent from ORD to ELP. No service from MBS to ORD, not even water. However, when flying American from FNT to ORD, which is a shorter flight, they at least pass out snacks and offer water.

Staff friendly and app worked really well. Modest delays were frustrating

The flight from Chicago to Orlando was delayed inordinately. My whole journey from Lansing to MCO took 9.5 hours is just annoying and frustrating. We can understand the delays may be beyond their control, but overall the journey was so much waiting until reached to MCO. This is NOT the first time for me - but at least 80% of the time in this route. I barely remember reaching places on time.

I sat in seat 22D near the back right of the plane. My phone battery was getting low, so I plugged my charger into the power outlets below the seats in front of me. They did not work. When I asked the flight attendant whether this was the case for the whole plane he said, "No. It's only this one. It hasn't worked for months". This should be noted to whomever services this plane so that maintenance can fix this for future passengers. I was on Flight AA5614 from Grand Rapids to Philadelphia on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

The passenger in front of of me reclined their seat back all the way the entire flight. Their headrest was in my face the entire flight! I barely had room for the little plastic cup of water to fit on my tray table; can you make the seats and space between the rows any smaller??? You can’t even get up to use the restroom! Worst flight I’ve had in a very long time!

I was on a small regional flight from Detroit to Philadelphia. When we landed the outside cruise needed to turn something off with the engine, which took quite a long time. Then, when they allowed us to get off the plane it was outside. They took their time, unloading all the luggage and waited till they unloaded all the luggage before they brought it over to us. It was 9 o’clock at night freezing cold out, and there was no proactive hustle to try to get people their luggage. It was really one of the worst experiences I think I’ve ever had with American until a manager came over. I don’t think they were going to even consider pulling the luggage over to the people that had been waiting outside for at least 10 minutes in the freezing cold.

It was a good trip. Flight Attendants were friendly and responsive.

They should have allowed for extra time to de-ice the plane before boarding passengers. This delayed us about 10-15 mins after we boarded. Overall experience was fine. Crew was friendly and on top of everything. We didn’t have any issues during the flight.

The trip was very smooth and they provided great customer service

Everything was excellent. I loved my flight Thank you so much 😊

It was on time, which is always a good thing. There wasn’t any food hence my okay rating.

I wish the indicator on the side of each row was easier to decipher regarding which seat was the window, middle and row seat. Otherwise, no complains.
