Flights from Florida to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Get there early so you can enjoy some of at the great restaurants at the airport before you board.
ChristinaFlew with Allegiant Air-Jun 2026
The “Allegiant air only” airports are bare bones. They are packed. There’s no lounge. You want all that stuff you better fly a major carrier and accept at least one connection and pick a different Florida airport. But you don’t have to arrive a million hours before your flight so it’s almost like your house is the lounge.
RasheshFlew with JetBlue-Jul 2026
Hafw the outlets at Ft Lauderdale Airport were not working, but the bag drop off and security line went without a hitch
TamaraFlew with Southwest-Jul 2026
Southwest fare restrictions have become much more strict. Make sure you read the fine print.
JeffreyFlew with JetBlue-Jul 2026
jet blue terminal is far from car rental center. southwest, delta are way more convenient
JoleneFlew with American Airlines-May 2026
It’s so convenient. I always check my carry on bag at the boarding desk. Saves me from having to schlep the suitcase through the connecting flight terminal
BrianFlew with Southwest-Mar 2026
1) Stay in Tampa if you can, October - March :-) Cold in Milwaukee 2) Get the Southwest Credit Card for earlier boarding and “free” checked bags.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-May 2026
Only bring small carry on it makes for an easy board
sondraFlew with Delta-May 2026
No need to arrive too early. TSA is a breeze.
raela marieFlew with Spirit Airlines-Mar 2026
Get to the airport two hours in advance!
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-May 2026
Don’t plan on using overhead bin space if you board after group 4 on any American flights using 737’s. They are frequently full by the time the 4th group boards. And, if your carry on bag has to be checked at the gate, be sure it has nothing breakable inside, as it may not survive that process.
IllaFlew with Frontier-Mar 2026
The TSA check lines are not all open 24 hours and you have to go thru a specific checkpoint depending on your Airline.
AlissaFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2026
Make sure you opt in for all notifications just in case you have multiple delays in your flight like I did.
LisaFlew with Breeze Airways-Mar 2026
Get to airport early and be polite to the TSA workers who still aren’t getting paid due to government shutdown.
LindaFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2026
You need to arrive extra early due to long lines checking bags and going through TSA.
mariaFlew with Spirit Airlines-Apr 2026
Give yourself several hours extra because flights did not run as scheduled
EricFlew with Allegiant Air-Mar 2026
Get to Fort Lauderdale airport early because security is a nightmare
SoosnataFlew with Delta-Feb 2026
I prepaid my baggage fee through the Delta App during web check-in; however, I was unable to locate the receipt afterward. It would be helpful if prepaid baggage receipts were clearly linked within the trip details section and/or accessible under the traveler profile for easy retrieval. This added visibility would enhance transparency and provide greater convenience for customers managing their travel documentation. Overall, a small enhancement that could further elevate the digital experience.
JamesFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2026
My advise is to pack lightly to avoid paying for the cost of one bag in the amount of 35 dollars. The amount isn't the worst I've paid, for my traveling bag but so many individuals used the overhead luggage rack as well as a back pack that didn't pay for transporting a large suitcase that I intend to do the same in the future.
BreannaFlew with Allegiant Air-Dec 2025
Layer up! It’s usually warm in Orlando but cold when you get to Grand Rapids . Wear those layers on the plane as it’s a little cold too. Then you will be well prepared when you arrived to Grand Rapids
JeffFlew with Delta-Dec 2025
Worth being a SkyMiles member for the free checked bag Plan extra time at Miami, the walk from the MIAMover to the check in was very far and the moving sidewalks were not functioning.
BrianFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2026
I would say bring a backup snack or pre-order food with Alaska. I love Alaska airlines' new food options.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Jan 2026
Night flights are less crowded and leave on time or even earlierike mine did. It was great.
NancyFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2026

American airlines is the best arrive early the airport can be confusing
BobFlew with Delta-Feb 2026
You need at least a 1 1/2 hrs between connecting flights if you’re going to connect to the west coast in the winter. And if you’re planning to connect to a regional airport after reaching the west or east coast it better be 2 hrs.
CindyFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2026
At Miami International, after check in at ticketing, be aware of the long walk to the American D Concourse. Signs are confusing, as there are several ways to go depending on your gate number. Stop and ask for clarification often.
CourtneyFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2026
Miami is a big airport with a lot of international flights, so give yourself enough time to get through TSA. Expect last minute gate change that is possibly 20 or more gates away from the initial gate provided.
SusieFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2026
Don’t go cheap and pay for better seats, not at the back of the plane.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Jan 2026
Spirit Airlines counter at Key West is not busy/ long and security line is moderate.
JoleneFlew with American Airlines-Dec 2025

Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2026
Watch for busy traffic going to the airport. Plan accordingly
JeffFlew with Delta-Dec 2025
Eat before boarding or bring your own snack on board.
MeghanFlew with Southwest-Feb 2026
MCO security doesn't have a mobile liquid container to drain your water bottles between the ID check and the luggage scan, you have to empty your bottles before you get in line (or drink it all before you make it to the luggage scan). Many other airports offer a space to empty your drink out, or warn you of that ahead of time, for MCO the warning didn't display until after you get through the ID check which was not helpful as there's no way to exit to find a sink once you're past that point.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2026
Do not pay for a seat when booking the flight if they show no free seats, because they make you buy one and then send you messages to select a seat and there are plenty of free seats
Verified travelerFlew with Breeze Airways-Feb 2026
There is no good service included with the ticket. You get one small cup of water. So bring your own.
MichaelFlew with United Airlines-Nov 2025
United refundable fare with bag check makes life easy for big trip. Otherwise, no bag check, moderate carry-on go cheap as possible. Grab food and beverage at airport to make flight enjoyable and kill time. It's really just a long cab ride
ChristineFlew with Alaska Airlines-Nov 2025
Getting to the airport early is a must. Have a plan and map for your airline's checking desk. If you ask someone for directions, make sure they are clear or that you understand, a lot of TSA and airport personnel spoke English with hard dialects and some didn't know where the Alaska Air terminal was.
ReginaFlew with GOL-Jun 2025
It is a good connection, it gives you enough time to go through passport control and luggage claim and drop off. Eat close to the boarding gate because the next flight lasts 6 hours and there is no food service on the plane.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Apr 2025
Chicago is a huge airport, wear comfortable shoes if you're looking to make a connection. It might be a 15 minute speed walk. Jacksonville is a little more compact and easier to navigate. Lots of food and beverage options in each.
PFlew with Spirit Airlines-Mar 2025
MCI in Kansas City, MO, is easy to navigate, and staff is friendly and ready to assist, if needed. I suggest that people arrive early and watch for updates. Having the app made it easy to keep up with gate changes.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Mar 2025
For budget travelers, this is a good airline. Stick to the luggage dimensions, bring a snack and a book or entertainment that does not require WiFi and you will get to you destination for a great price.
LeoFlew with Spirit Airlines-Apr 2025
Get to the airport a bit earlier to have a snack or meal prior to boarding. It’s a short flight, about 1.5 hours, so each airport has plenty of choices.
KalebFlew with Spirit Airlines-May 2025
Get to the airport early and read about what you can or can’t bring. Don’t be greedy on the bag situation.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Apr 2025
I like Alaska. If you need a screen attached in front of your seat, better to check your flights first.
KaoriFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2025
Be aware of the gate number and the time required to reach it, as the airport is vast.
BrittanyFlew with United Airlines-Dec 2024
Prepare for a long flight and always have back up entertainment options prepared in case a different plane gets subbed before your flight with no notice.
FrankFlew with Spirit Airlines-Jan 2025
Don’t get to the airport to early. The boarding is orderly so you don’t have to be there too soon
KeithFlew with Southwest-Jan 2025

Get there early. We arrived 2.5 hours prior to the flight and due to the Spirit check-in and bag drop process (or lack of a process), we almost missed our flight.
Verified travelerFlew with Frontier-Feb 2025
Do the check in always at the phone because they close the counter and the agents leave you without any solution

The car rental bus at KC airport is located at the 2nd drive from the exit doors of the luggage pickup area. Just walk through the doors, across the first driveway through to the pickup island. You should see the bus to your left. This is also the area the Uber drivers pickup.

Also, don't be even a minute late checking in, they will deny you checking in or boarding and you will have to buy another flight.
Debbie AFlew with Southwest-Jun 2024
Take a direct flight and if given the option to go ahead without your checked luggage , chose to wait at your final destination - your luggage just might make that connection after all.. I would still fly Southwest - your workers did everything they could to fix the problem.
HenryFlew with Breeze Airways-Aug 2024
For MCO arrive with plenty of time to make it through the TSA checkpoint. Stewart / Newburgh is a great smaller airport to fly in or out of.

New York JFK is massive and the signage there for connecting flights is not so good as you need to travel via AirTrain between the different terminals and the signage for this is missing in some places, making it confusing as to which way to go.

1. **Book Early**: Secure your tickets in advance to get better deals. 2. **Check for Deals**: Keep an eye out for promotions or discounts on flights. 3. **Pack Light**: Consider packing light to avoid extra baggage fees. 4. **Arrive Early**: Reach the airport with ample time for check-in and security. 5. **Stay Updated**: Monitor your flight status for any potential delays or changes. 6. **Comfort Items**: Bring essentials like snacks, a neck pillow, and entertainment for the flight. 7. **Stay Hydrated**: Remember to drink water during the flight to stay refreshed. 8. **Plan Transportation**: Arrange transportation from the airport in Newark to your final destination in advance.
JoeFlew with Frontier-Mar 2024
Only use Fort Myers Airport twice. Everything went smoothly. Smaller Airport super easy getting in and out. Thirfty and Dollar car rent were super busy and lines were very long. Your wait could be well over an hour to get through line. My advice use another provider. For your car rental. Lines were much smaller.
LauraFlew with Southwest-Apr 2024
Always go at least a couple hour prior to flight time. Keep an eye on gates they tend to change.
HollyFlew with Southwest-Mar 2024
Pay the extra for early checkin. It’s worth it if you’re flying with someone.
LorraineFlew with Alaska Airlines-Mar 2024
Do get there 2 hrs. ahead as security lines can be long.
RobFlew with Spirit Airlines-May 2024
If Fort Lauderdale to Pittsburgh is your connecting flight coming from the Bahamas, you better have at least five hours in between flights to have a chance to make your connecting flight.

It's a small airport that seems to always be overcrowded. Arrive at the airport an hour before your scheduled flight time and you'll be fine.

Get TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry which includes TSA Pre-Check. In Terminal 3, there really isn't any place to set up a laptop outside one of the restaurants.
AmyFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2024
Arrive 3-4 hours early if you have a flight leaving between 4-5am. TSA lines were very long and people were rushing to catch their flights. The trams to the terminal get crowded very quickly.
LeonardFlew with Delta-Dec 2023
Weekend is jammed pack with thousand of cruise passengers both coming and going at the same time. Terminal is full & traffic is jammed. Lots of people waiting for their flight hours in advance.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2024
Get a nonstop flight. The extra leg room is worth it for tall people. Did not get it for the return flight (already over budget), so we will see how that goes.
MattFlew with Frontier-Feb 2024
Always check the incoming flight to see if your plane is arriving on time. Frontier notoriously lags behind other airlines when it comes to updating their on-time/delayed departures.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Feb 2024
Check to see if the airport has the “Clear” TSA screening. Which is free when scheduled through the airport vs pay a fee if scheduled through Spirit Airlines, shocking…..

The shuttles from the rental car drop off to the various terminals was an insanely long wait. The guy working the shuttle lines told everyone we could walk, that it would only take "4 minutes" to get to our terminal, but it ended up taking about 30 minutes. So hoards of people slugging their luggage to various terminals on the sidewalk was painful. The security lines were LONG, probably would've taken 1 hour to get through, but we paid for the Clear and it ended up being maybe 45 minutes instead. The TSA process was not super efficient and they only had a 3 lanes open out of the maybe 10 possible. Not too many nice shops or eating places near our gate. Will do everything to avoid flying to/from Ft Lauderdale in the future.
LoriFlew with Sun Country Air-Feb 2024

Very quick and easy process from check in to deboarding and baggage claim. Crew was professional and friendly. Flight was smooth and on time. Very convenient for short flights.

I thought that I had pre-purchased carry-on luggage and was surprised when I tried to check in that I did not have it.

Overall good. Plenty of legroom and fairly comfortable seats. No issues with capacity and the overhead been even though most people brought several carry-ons on. I don’t think Breeze really enforces the pay for a carry-on rule.

Comfortable seating, adequate space available, nice to have USB port, polite crew.

This was my first experience with Breeze. The plane was cleaner and more comfortable than any other I've experienced. The process of boarding was streamlined. We boarded early and arrived at our destination 45 minutes early. The only hiccup was my ticket was rejected by TSA PreCheck and I got sent to the back of a very long line at Fort Myers. I entered my information when I bought my ticket, but it apparently didn't connect to my permanent profile. I'll correct that for next time. I was expecting an Allegiant experience, but Breeze was much more upscale. I really, really enjoyed it.

Great experience. Non stop is great in and of itself.

It was great except the other passengers who didnt have children complaining and not giving grace to the mommas with tiny babies who were trying to comfort their little ones during the decent. They were clearly trying and every child travels different.

Nice aircraft but no in flight entertainment was disappointing. I felt nickel and dimed to death having to pay for my seat, my carry-on and then my soda!

Worst airline - on our flight down from MCO to EYW, there was a huuuuuge delay. We were supposed to take off 12p and it was pushed back to almost 2:30p. We boarded the plane and then sat on the tarmac forever because we were "over" weight and had to burn fuel. Rather than ask guests to volunteer and leave, they kept us on the plane. Finally a family decided to off board and take their luggage with them. Shortly after, we left the terminal but then the pilot told us we may have to sit at the end of the runway for 15-20mins to burn more fuel. Which we ended up doing and of course it started to rain. We finally took off 2:50p. We were supposed to land 1p and didn't land until 3:45p. Basically had time to scramble off the plane, grab our luggage, request transportation to our hotel, unpack, rinse off and hustle over to our 6:30p dinner ressy. It's a shame Breeze is the only non-stop airline from MCO to EYW. For this, not sure I'd ever go back to EYW - most def will not take Breeze again.

Flight was rescheduled from (originally) early Saturday departure to a late Sunday departure. Then the late Sunday departure was delayed again (weather) and got in very late. We’ve enjoyed Breeze a lot, but this particular experience was a little disappointing.

Eveeyrime I fly they are begging for bags due to cabin overhead space. What they should so ia take the bags that are clearly too big to fit wheels first on their side. And those of us who give up the bag should really get their bags first. When boarding, nobody wants stupid jokes about how hot it is on board. Give us some cool air. Im usually sick from the heat by the time we take off.

Friendly crew kept coming by to make sure all was ok, provide additional refreshments, etc.

SW can't get their wifi right. I upgrade to insure wifi service but the last two trips had intermittent service. Not worth the extra costs.

Kayak could’ve posted the correct gate number. Almost missed my flight.

Slow boarding, limited food and drink portions. Bad delays and turbulence

The checking experience in Orlando was terrible, almost missed the flight. Too many travelers and Southwest completely understaffed.

Truly terrible. Will never willingly fly southwest again. Seats are worse than before they switched to assigned seating. One flight attendant was the opposite of helpful (rude, unhelpful, dismissive, and as my stranger seatmate said unprompted: a total prick). This caused me, 15 minutes into the flight, to book an alternate return flight home on a competing airline (first class 1.2k purchase instead of my existing planned flight) just so I would not have to ever be on that aircraft, with that terrible service person, with those horrific seats ever again.

Communication about the delayed flight was poor. We were told to move gates three times but that was bad information. We went from gate 128 to gate 126 and then to gate 123 and back to gate 126. Communication about the delay was bad. Ended up being 1 1/2 hour late getting home.

Southwest continues to do less for more money. Flight attendants used to be fun and friendly. But now it’s like they don’t even see you. Such a shame.

I liked it better when you were truer to your roots Am paying more for less fun

Pushing back flight and ultimately cancelling it after multiple changes and hours of delays. Comm were terrible as to what was going on and what options were available.

Some of the passengers are coming on board with luggage so overstuffed and/or too large that have no business going into the overhead bins.

Boarding was quick and i made my connection early due to early arrival time

My flight was canceled, and instead of rebooking me on a non-stop first-class flight for the same day, which I originally had, Delta rebooked me on a one-stop flight for the following day. When I checked the Delta app, I noticed that there were available flights for both the same day and the next day. I believe this indicates poor management on their part.

My flight was delayed and I got back around 3.5 hours later than expected. I had to get a new connecting flight

I had only one problem. The temperature on the flight was too COLD. I froze throughout the flight. I thought it might be only my problem but when I went to the restroom during the flight, I saw several people huddling in their jackets. A couple had their winter coats on and I was jealous since I had only a very light jacket.

Five hour delays every hour, I wish it were all at once

Got rerouted from a straight flight from Orlando to Atlanta to Knoxville to a flight from Orlando to Detroit to Knoxville! Seriously!! Flight delay out of Detroit! Long day for what should have been a pretty easy travel day!

Left /arrived on time. Decent seat space. Like the wifi/plugs and entertainment. Windows and tray table were kinda gross. Attendants didn't start snack service til 40mins before landing. Two rows before us, captain came on to say there's turbulence and recalled staff to seats. So, no drink/snack. Later, attendants didn't stop to see if we had trash nor even look our way. Felt invisible! Almost all pilot announcements were not only unintelligible, but so quiet. We had no idea what she said.

Gate agent was unhelpful for handicapped boarding. Flight attendant seemed untrained.

This is a no frills, get it done, efficient airline. The seat is a lawn chair. You better bring your own entertainment. If you want something other than water you need to pay for it. But they will get you to your destination quickly, on time, and then they will turn the flight around and go right back where they came from. Reliably. Couple times a week tops. If it fits into your schedule, you can’t get there cheaper or faster.

Allegiant actually impressed me, original inbound flight from PBG was so late they gave us a bird inbound from Des Moines and only left 1h late and gained 40 minutes back in the air. Comfortable flight with no frills but no complaints.

Flight was delayed. Crew was good but hot coffee was not available.

It was cold on the flight. The crew was very pleasant. I didn't order any food. We were delayed due to Captain waiting on maintenance log. He kept us informed though. The flight itself was smooth. I would definitely fly with Allegiant again!

Superb. Staff great. Great flight. As with other airlines, seating too tight and restrictive.

My 90 year old father flew with me. He needed wheel chair assistance and is nearly deaf. The staff was amazing with him.

It was fine. Nobody was outstandingly friendly but no one was rude and everything was smooth . The captain thanked us for flying but no one greeted me as I walked on the plane or as I exited which is the least they could do lol

Clean, friendly, roomy. But check-in from the phone link was terrible. Repeated attempts wouldn’t save at the final step. Just kept spinning! It was very frustrating. Finally, I used the app (vs website link) to check-in which worked very smoothly on the first attempt.

Excellent flight and even arrived 23 min early. No entertainment , or wi fi on board, but I downloaded a couple of movies beforehand which kept me entertained. Really like flying Allegiant airlines.

Tight! Seats are not designed for those of us who wear extra-large clothes.

There was a 6 hours delay in our departure. And yet, no compensation was offered. A company should be responsible for such a delay.

My flight was delayed several hours, which is to be expected (American never fails to disappoint me!), but the parts that really bothered me are as follows: 1) I was unable to add myself to the standby list for another flight in the app, nor could the gate agents figure out how to help me do so (the app is difficult to work with and simply did not allow me to perform the action of adding myself to the list) 2) When I asked the gate agents to add me to the standby list, the agent said that he had added me, but I was not able to confirm that I was on the list in the app; as it turns out, I had NOT been added to the list after all. He had lied to me and/or failed to add me to the list. 3) I figured out I had not been added to the standby list when I spoke to the (rather rude, snippy, and dismissive) other gate agent, who finally did add me to the list after giving me some pretty unnecessary attitude. I understand that gate agents experience the worst of stressed travelers every day, so I appreciate that I was eventually able to make it onto the standby flight with their help. However, the app needs some SERIOUS attention!

Nice ! I am gold member at United Airlnes probably I will shift at American Airlines and JAL ! Thank you ! Kindly maintain quality service I fly often! ❤️

The flight was delayed 4 hours, and when we finally boarded, they told us that the fuel was only just then checked. So, we waited even longer to take off.

Everything was done like clockwork and I find no fault with the airline.

Like all planes recently, entertainment is achieved by giving the patron free WiFi and letting them stream shows via the screen on a phone or tablet.

I thought American Airlines did well considering the adverse weather situation over July 21 and 22. I especially appreciated the consideration given to me when I got stuck in Miami on my way to Boston from Charleston, West Virginia. Thank you for providing a voucher for an overnight stay. Though it was only a few hours of sleep, it was very helpful. I was able to reschedule my medical appointment and got back to the Boston area on the 1st flight out of Miami as a standby passenger. It was very helpful that I was given number one priority on the standby list.

Quick flight. No time to stress over it. Over before it begins.

- flight was delayed several hours due to weather (understandable) - flight delayed further and we were told by attendants "we are not sure where the pilots are but they are on their way" as we have to find different pilots for the flight - announcements over the PA were somewhat unprofessional by the attendants, seems they need more training and were not reading off the script. They showed their young age and immaturity in their communications with the passengers. They were not clear and lacked professional communication language. - going from a hub to hub we were also parked at the tarmac at ohare for an additional hour and kept being told "few more minutes". Please just let the passengers know the real wait time instead of hiding the truth. We understand there is traffic and weather delays, but we just want transparency. There are several logistics of our lives that revolve around what the attendants and pilots are sharing with us but they are not being transparant.

Not great. I understand delays happen due to weather and crew issues, but it was unacceptable that no agents were available at the counters inside the airport for customer service or help getting on a standby list. The app was not helpful either. I stood in line for an hour waiting for someone to show up at the gate to help me get on a standby flight. Customer care does not seem to be a priority.
