Flights from California to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from California to the United States

Oakland is a nice small airport. Getting through security was a breeze with TSA precheck. We did have to stand in line for about 20minutes to drop bags as there were no agents at the counter. I had the most delicious crispy Al pastore taco near face 14
FraxysFlew with American AirlinesONT-DFWJun 2025
Bring an empty refillable water bottle/container through TSA and fill it up as soon as you pass the security check. The water station is available to the left and to the right of it.

Arrive at Burbank an hour before your flight and you will be just fine.

Pay the additional to get your seat in advance and bring a carryon.
CarlosFlew with Alaska AirlinesSAN-AUSJun 2025
Get to the San Diego airport early. The security line will be long. Also, if you're flying Alaska Airlines and don't check in online, go to the Alaska Airlines "Agent Assit" counter first. Don't be like me and go to the Alaska Airlines "Bag Drop" line. That was a bit confusing. If you're flying Alaska Airlines.
ElenaFlew with United AirlinesSFO-EWRJun 2025
Construction in the terminal so allow for extra time in SFO. Very easy finding luggage and getting outside at Newark. Also, this time, took the Express Bus into Manhattan - $25 is a good price, though the bus arrived 20 minutes after the scheduled time.
TorieFlew with Spirit AirlinesBUR-LASJun 2025
Be aware that you pay extra for even a carry-on suitcase, but you can bring a personal item at no extra charge (purse, computer bag, etc). There is typically turbulence going into and out of Las Vegas during the warm season.
MaryFlew with DeltaSAN-ATLJun 2025
San Diego is great airport at terminal 2. Not so great for Uber pick up past terminal 1 diversion When busy.

Avoid LAX. Personal experience. I have had less chaotic process in Ontario, CA airport. If transferring through another AA flight, consider Phoenix airport.
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian AirlinesSMF-HNLMar 2025
Bring a blanket for the flight and your own snacks. WiFi on the plane was great and the leg room in our seats was good also
MaryannFlew with United AirlinesSFO-EWRMar 2025
Bring your own food with you. Airport and airline food is expensive and you WILL need something to eat on such a long flight.
EricFlew with Alaska AirlinesSBP-SANMay 2025
SBP gets busy in the early morning with several flights departing between 6am and 7am. Arriving early will avoid stress.

It’s an easy short flight, so a quick recharge nap is nice. A neck pillow is recommended.

GeraldFlew with American AirlinesSJC-PHXMay 2025
SJC is physically a smaller airport. The gates are closer and TSA has shorter lines, They are not subject to weather delays as much as SFO. On the other hand SFO offers more flight options, both in the number of flights each airlines flies and the number of airlines serving the airport.
HFlew with American AirlinesLAX-TUSMar 2025
It’s really easy. The only complaint might be the tram back to the last terminal to Tucson. It runs about once an hour and there is only one food option when you get there. Just give yourself plenty of time..
John William MichaelFlew with American AirlinesLAX-SATMar 2025
Watch the departure gate. Some are distant requiring shuttle service and there is minimal to non existent food, beverage, and usual shopping at these gates. Take food with you before boarding the shuttle.
RonaldFlew with Alaska AirlinesSNA-SFOApr 2025
The airport security can take a long time, the bathrooms are not always available near the gates due to construction, repairs, remodels.

Better concession options on other terminals than 3, if you’re flying Delta. Explore if you have time.

LawrenceFlew with United AirlinesSFO-HNLMay 2025
Get to your gate early!!! Very little seating at/near gates 19, 20, 21 and 22. The last couple of flights, American boarding (very different gates) has been very straightforward. The last time on United, boarding at gate 19 was bedlam. Really going to look hard before scheduling on United next time!!!
MargaretFlew with Hawaiian AirlinesBUR-SEAMay 2025
The delays we experienced on both flights to and from were cancelled or delayed which made for a very stressful trip. I would suggest monitoring the flight status continuously before arriving at the airport.
William DrewFlew with SouthwestSJC-HNLDec 2024
If you're flying from San Jose, arrive at the airport early. You never know how long the line at TSA will be. If you have time, the airport has well-designed facilities and reasonable priced restaurants. The Southwest ground staff is professional and will help you through the check-in and cattle call boarding process
KateFlew with FrontierLAX-PHXDec 2024
Pack a snack food and airport is very expensive. Bring an empty water bottle. There are lots of filling stations. Delays seem to happen frequently be flexible and kind. You’ll get to where you’re going.

Make sure to arrive at the airport early. On my recent flight from LAX to San Jose, the plane departed 20 minutes ahead of schedule. It seemed like all passengers were on board, and the aircraft was ready for takeoff.

I prefer this airport over LAX. It is manageable, and one only needs one to one and a half hours of preflight arrival.

Easy check in and less crowd. Short walk to boarding gate.
LeoFlew with American AirlinesONT-CLTSep 2024
Have plenty of patience for the casual travelers! They are oblivious of rules and etiquettes that slows down the process for everyone. Case in point, a guy held up the line trying to place both his personal item (should be UNDER the seat in front of you) and his carry on case horizontally. Obviously not aware of the big poster right in front of his displaying the proper way of placing his case on it's side. Slowed the whole line of people behind him. Also be mindful the agents in Ontario airport (or any smaller airports) might not be the most knowledgeable on the rules and regulations of air travel, luggage specification allowances etc. Stay patient!! Also the seats do not recline that well anymore on AA flights. So if you have back problems, be sure to bring some back supports.

It’s pretty simple there. It’s one of the better airports.TSA has never been a problem for me there it moves and is mostly efficient… I was happy that we didn’t have to takeoff our shoes, which surprised me. They’re always seems to be long walk to the gates coming and going not sure why that is

Layover from NRT(JPN), to SFO (US), to LAX(US) Easy if you are a United States Citizen, when you go to US Border & Customs, bring your Passport if you arrive Internationally. Remember to pick up your check baggage before moving into domestic flights, as they will check the tag for the plane you are boarding in. (They will check your baggage again). Bring your ID/DL (Real-ID COMPLIANT) with you to pass security/TSA, passport works too. SFO is pretty strict as well as LAX.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSFO-SEAJul 2024
It is a very crowded flight, so I advice to choose seats in advance. We didn’t have that option and that was the only complaint I’d have because they put us in the middle seats and we both wanted aisle seats. My sister was able to switch but I wasn’t. She was switched to the back, almost to the last row.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSFO-PSPJun 2024
SFO ~ most convenient People should prepare themselves for cold temperature inside the cabin, bring coat/jacket and food in case flight is delayed.

Understand that you were going to land in the middle of the airport somewhere way far away from the terminal then you walk down a ramp then you walk to a terminal you get on a bus what you have to wait in the line for the bus to come and get you the bus goes very slowly to the terminal you get out and then you walk 2700 steps I walked to get to where I was supposed to go And then find it because I didn’t have a boarding pass was not easy so don’t try to go there and make a quick connection you can’t do it
JulieFlew with SouthwestSFO-LAXJun 2024
Avoid flying into LAX. It’s a nightmare. Baggage claim took 40 minutes. And then the shuttle to the car rental place took an hour because there are two shuttles. The first is a local bus that makes a stop at every seven terminals and then it takes you to another place where you have to wait for your smaller shuttle to the car rental place.
BryanFlew with American AirlinesSFO-DFWAug 2024
Don't count on wheelchair assistance, particularly if you have a short connection and different terminals. DFW is HUGE and the assistance program is a disaster.

fine. only problem,,,, for some,,,,was that many people started trying to exit from the back of the plane,, . lots of irate people. there should be a flight attendant mid plane..to be sure that doesn't happen. The crew up front had no idea what was happening. One big guy started it..then a bunch of others followed his lead. could have gotten ugly... One man stepped in and questioned those rule breakers.. nothing bad happened,,,but......

The setting on the loudspeaker was painful and the crew member who did the talking spoke very quickly and repetitively, with extra little jokes that were distracting and mostly unfunny. I doubt that the main messages penetrated the noise.

I like the new adjustable headrest. Unfortunately 2 crying children were in front of us. But it was the first time and not holding Alaska accountable for that. Alaska always seems to have everything in order professional but comfortable.

Eddie, our flight attendant in the back was excellent. He was very kind and concerned for our happiness and comfort before and during our flight. He made the experience great. We had to deplane due to a ground delay and he made sure we had snacks and water to keep us comfortable while we waited. Overall, it was a great experience!

Flight was delayed which caused us to have to change our connecting flight. Grilled cheese sandwich was served very hot.

Big delay of over 7 hours on next leg of trip with Alaska. Would have been nice to have food or something

We were late so that was what was worst part

Very bad, terrible food and late by 2 hours. Then no to open aircraft doors

The Alaska app and website were not fully operational. I had to spend about 15 minutes at the counter doing things that should have been completed online. The agent was very nice and helpful, however.

Flying on Hawaiian Airlines was good. But, getting a boarding pass was a hassle. I booked what I thought was an Alaska Airlines flight that was actually a Hawaiian Airlines flight. I couldn't check in online. I had to wait for the Hawaiian Airlines counter to open so I could get my boarding pass which was a requirement for me to get in The Club or the Centurion Lounge. (I had no check in luggage so I didn't expect to have to physically check in.) The Alaska Airlines staff blamed the FAA for the problem.

Delayed flight. Nicest crew member was a SW pilot flying seated next to me who kindly move to seat the final passenger. Flight extra delayed. My cup of refreshment of ginger ale was so packed with ice it was literally 2 sips.

No trays in our seats, we sat in first row, purchased a business class fare. Had to hold our drinks and snack in our hands. No plugs for our cell phones. Had to pay for it a drink cocktail each. Seats so uncomfortable.

Flight wasn’t even full, but too many carry-ons caused us to run out of bin space. New bag fee has folks who would usually check their bags carrying on. Watching Southwest morph into Spirit/Frontier is so sad to watch

Southwest is Southwest. No frills. If you're luck enough to get a happy crew (we did), then it makes for a nicer flight.

It was a perfect flight in all aspects! Both legs!

Great flight, 47 passengers on a 180 seat plane. Stewardess was pleasant and cheerful.

I liked the crew member who gave flight instructions on "in case of a problem:. The seats are so small that only a young teenager could sit in middle seat.

Great flight staff. Ease of boarding. Overall, very uneventful and easy trip.

Employees were kind and funny, as always! Flight was late but no announcements were made for people with tight connections to help them transition quickly. No service due to turbulence.

I recently flew Southwest from San Jose to Honolulu. I was very impressed with the flight crew, especially the flight attendant in charge of the front of the plane. She came through the aisle at least five times for drinks and water, and two times for snacks. I have not seen such service since I flew first class. Also, for the first time, they gave us the correct baggage claim number, and the luggage came out quickly. I can't wait for Southwest to have assigned seating! I absolutely hate the Cattle Call boarding procedure and the mad dash to get seats and overhead bins. However, the boarding was efficient.

Everything was great. Only thing that could’ve made it better was buy on board options for hot food, but the snacks were decent. The flight attendants were great. I had no complaints. I was able to make it to my destination safely

Boarded plane and then delayed 1.5 hours while on the plane

Horrific. They missed my connecting flight to San Diego. I didn’t get there until Monday at 9am when I had a mandatory court settlement conference scheduled at 6am since we had parties on the east coast. This caused many issues. All because United apparently forgot to hold the doors open until my flight landed that only had a 10 minute delay. This was the last flight to Southern California. So I couldn’t even rent a car to finish the trip. United cannot be trusted when traveling on specific days and times since weather didn’t have anything to do with the delays.

Really good 😊 the woman at the gate entrance was a little rude checking in our carry-on but i dont think she worked for the airline, she worked for the airport at sacramento, other than that amazing.

it was so bad. I tried to board my flight from vancouver to saskatoon. And to my surprise they did not board me cause the flight was changed and no email was send to me. and on my boarding pass which i got from seattle says different flight. I did not knew anyone from Vancouver, air canada crew was rude, i asked for today flight but they were rude and i had early morning dental appointment in saskatoon. I was so much in pain and my whole day is wasted today. and i suffered alot. They did provide me hotel but they did not provide me any food. I am really really disappointed first time had so bad experience with air canada. I may think twice to book it again. If i can get any reply or any composition that would be great. Thanks

Very comfortable (upgraded to business class). The audio on my screen didn’t work, but I managed to play the audio through my phone while watching the screen.

I was supposed to be on business class at first class from Denver back to Miami due to weather changes. I missed my connection and it’s put on a flight to Fort Lauderdale. Instead of honoring my business class/1st class ticket, they put me in coach, but there were two first class seats open. I think it’s absolutely disgusting that I paid for first class $1300 ticket and they put me in economy and they had to open seats available and I have still not been refunded the difference. I ended up having to eat a snack box instead of the meal I was supposed to get and did not get home till 2 AM so I think that’s a little pathetic that I had to live off crackers for dinner And my poor dog ate some cheese and salami. Oh yes, apparently when they switched me to the new flight they forgot to mention I had a service dog

Boarding seemed to be organized bedlam. For what ever reason, preboarding took longer than 20 minutes. Made the plane 20 minutes late taking off. Luckily we arrived on time. Flight crew seemed very friendly. Only slight turbulence.

The personnel were professional and friendly. The Boeing 737 Max 9 is too claustrophobic and was very warm at both airport gates, and still warm in the air.

While the staff was pleasant and helpful, the following observations are for your awareness. There was some delay on the tarmac on take off and landing. The paid lunch/food offerings were limited. Entertainment was only available on WiFi at a cost.

It was okay delay was long but I made it

I have never flown Spirit it was much better than anticipated!

Staff was very friendly. They attended to people nicely and reprimanded, in a professional way, to those who wouldn’t listen. AC wasn’t working on the flight waiting to depart in Burbank, so it was uncomfortable for a while since the flight was delayed but then better before take off.

Good on that leg. When I arrived in Detroit I had to wait over an hour for luggage.

First off, i received an e-mail to allow me to check in for our flight. I folllowed the link, when it came to the seat selection, I was unable to select any "free" seats ( meaning without any additional charge) because everything was " unavailable". My Husband and I were ttavelling with our 3 children hence, i wanted to be assured that we were all seated next to each other. I tried 3 times and everytime I click the selection it said " error loading". What the system wants is for me to buy the seats ( anywhere from $25 to $50 dollars each passenger) like I did on our flight bound to L.A. I called customer service and the guy was unhelpful all he kept repeating was to come really early at the airport and we will be assigned seats there. Imagine my anxiety!!! Spirit says they are a budget airline but they are actually the opposite!! And just before our flight, the flight attendant KEPT announcing/ selling the seats that were not purchased for a cheaper price!! Like it was a bidding/ bargaining game! This was our first and last time to fly Spirit.

The crew was very nice. I would like to see them offer basic refreshments just like a soda and pretzels, etc. for free.

Good experience except for the drunk woman who was with a child. Sad

Too many time late and postponed No electrical power for my electric devices

Spirit is by far the worst airline to travel with, period. Seats are cardboard, flight attendants need anger management and if you ask for water, you’re basically a criminal. I don’t care how much it costs but I will travel with an airline who actually cares about their customers. Oh and one more thing, the next time your gate agent puts his foot on someone’s baggage's scale, I hope they get what’s coming next, a viral video of your scams. You suck Spirit, do better.

I mean, it’s Spirit. But it was frustrating to have our flight canceled, get bumped to a later flight, and then Spirit was unwilling to check our bag until 4 hours before our flight… tell us we could not sit in the waiting area’s chairs… and really negative experience getting checked in and dropping the bag.

The delay was ridiculous because nary a word escaped from the gate attendant regarding our flight status. It was a complete joke.

I missed a flight because of a delay. I had to buy a new ticket through Southwest.

The crew was mostly okay. The flight attendant who answered our questions was curt and unhelpful unfortunately. He seemed upset and I understand having off days.

Cancelled flight after I arrived at airport after 75 min drive and parking. Next flight was 4 days in the future. Had to scramble and buy a much more expensive flight on another carrier.

I liked the turn-style feature at gate 209B at LAX. Very efficient process. The gate staff also made several, clearly directed announcements so I felt very informed.

The seats were awful, hard plastic covered in sheet vinyl. The airline tries to scam you into paying extra to get seat together when the flight wasn’t full. They were going to separate a family with young children but my wife who had a row to herself gave up her seat so the young mom could be with her young boys. I’m never giving this airline my money again.

It was a short flight so no food or entertainment….

Frontier had yet another flight cancellation. Have never made a complete round trip with this airline without at least one leg getting cancelled. Miserable flights - dirty, uncomfortable planes that apparently always have issues since I've had multiple delays and cancellations with them.

Flight was delayed 3 times, would have been nice to have received text message instead of email notifications. Frontier app wasn’t even updated accordingly, no gate number disclosed. No agent at front desk of gate to inform of delay. Very confused and left if the dark

They changed the timing , first delayed by 4 hours then went back to 40 mins late, we had to run back to airport to not miss our flight. This is ridiculous
