Paris Orly Airport: Expert advice and recommendations

Expert travel writer Daniel Scheffler shares all you need to know before booking a flight to or from Paris Orly Airport.

Paris Orly Airport (ORY) sits just 8 miles south of Paris, and it’s the city’s second-largest airport after Charles de Gaulle (CDG). Thanks to the Metro Line 14 extension, you can now reach central Paris from the airport, with the journey from Châtelet–Les Halles taking just 25 minutes. This extension has transformed how travelers access the city.

I lived in Paris for many years and this has been my go-to airport throughout, particularly for domestic flights and European travel – it’s fantastic with great coffee and pastries, a little shopping and an absolute ease of use. Now that it’s even more accessible, I am sure it will become other people’s favorite Paris airport, too.

How to get to Orly with public transportation

Thanks to the new metro line, this has never been easier. The standout is Metro 14, which runs from Saint-Denis–Pleyel to the airport, with the journey from Châtelet–Les Halles taking just 25 minutes with various stops throughout central Paris.

There are also plans for the Metro 18 line to connect other parts of the city to Orly, with phased openings expected over the next several years. For now, there’s also a tramline, T7, that connects Terminal 4 to Villejuif-Louis Aragon (the terminus of Metro Line 7) in about 30 minutes. Once you’re on the 7, you can connect to just about any part of Paris served by the Metro.

If you prefer a proper train, you can take the OrlyVal (the same one that connects the terminals). This train goes to Antony train station in just 6-7 minutes, where you can hop on the RER B train to reach Châtelet Les Halles in 25 minutes and Gare du Nord in 28 minutes.

There is also a shuttle bus service between Orly airport and Place Denfert-Rochereau, which takes roughly 30 minutes. At this station you can connect with the RER B train, plus the Metro 4 and 6 lines.

And if you’re heading to Disneyland Paris, you can take the Magical Shuttle directly to the park in about 60 minutes (though travel time can vary from 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and stops). From Terminals 1, 2, and 3, you’ll find the shuttle pick-up at the bus station on Platform 15, outside Gate 18a at Level 0. From Terminal 4, head to the bus station at Platform 3 after Gate 47d. Or just follow the Mickey Mouse signs in the terminals.

The airport has clear signage throughout, so just follow the signs for public transport to find your ride. Of course, you can also hop in a taxi right outside each terminal, and there are designated zones for rideshare pick-ups, too.

Terminals at Paris Orly

Paris Orly Airport operates 4 terminals (Orly 1, 2, 3, and 4), and here’s the good news: Orly 3 acts as a central junction, connecting all terminals under one roof so you can walk between them. Orly 1 and 2 replaced what was once the West Terminal (Orly Ouest), while Orly 4 is the former South Terminal (Orly Sud).

If you need to travel between terminals but can’t walk the full distance (or just don’t want to), take the OrlyVal connector train. It stops at two airport stations—Orly 1-2-3 and Orly 4—and travel between them is free.

Car rental and parking at ORY

Car rental is straightforward at Orly, with major international brands operating at a centralized location in Orly 1-2 on the arrivals level. If you’re arriving at Orly 4, you’ll need to take the free OrlyVal shuttle to Orly 1-2 to pick up your rental car keys.

Offices typically operate from around 6:00 AM to midnight, aligning with the first and last flights, and you can specify your arrival terminal when booking online to streamline pickup.

If you’re driving to the airport and need to park, there are many different parking options at Orly. You can find economy parking at PECO 2 with a free shuttle to the terminals running every 9-15 minutes.

There are also parking lots at P2 (for Orly 1-2), P3 (for Orly 3), and P4a/b/c (for Orly 4) so you can easily walk to check-in. Premium lots at P2 and P4b are closer to the terminals and come with covered parking and extra security.

Electric vehicle charging stations are available in car parks P2, P3, P4a, P4b, and P4c.

All parking lots are clearly marked when driving into the airport, and you can prepay or pay at the gates. Valet service is also available if you pre-book online.

Services and amenities at ORY

Orly covers all the essentials and then some. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the entire airport, and you’ll find practical services like a medical center in Orly 1 (arrivals level, near Gate 10A) and pharmacies in Orly 1, 3, and 4.

There is a full-service post office for Orly 1 and 2 on the arrivals level near Gate 14a. There are HSBC ATMs in Orly 1-2 and Orly 4 (both arrivals and departures levels), and several currency exchanges operated by Global Exchange Bureau. You’ll find them at Orly 1 departures at Gate 21D, Orly 3 departures after security, and Orly 4 on the departures level in both the public area and after security.

If you’re looking for a prayer room, those are also available. Orly 1 and 2 have an inter-faith prayer area on the arrivals level (Level 0, near Gates 10a/14a). Orly 4 has extensive prayer facilities on Level 1, including a Catholic chapel for mass and Protestant worship services, a Muslim prayer room, and a Synagogue.

Dining at Orly

Orly’s dining scene showcases French culinary excellence across all 4 terminals. You’ll find outposts of French names like Ladurée Paris, the famed tearoom serving seasonal menus and their renowned macarons, with locations in all four terminals. For more baked goods, master baker Eric Kayser has two outlets on Level 1 in Orly 2’s boarding area, and this is where I love to buy coffee and a French pastry.

If you just want a sandwich, every terminal has a Paul Bakery, and they are freshly stocked daily. Orly 3 has several bars and cafés that are great places for a leisurely sit-down with a proper drink, a savory snack, and a serious side of people-watching.

Shopping at Orly

In true French flair, the airport has all the fabulous brands that you can dream of from Celine and Chanel to Cartier and Dior. All four terminals are well-stocked with shopping opportunities. You can even start before you arrive, as online shopping with airport pickup is available for many stores here. And of course, there is duty-free shopping, too.

Two of my favorite department stores are represented at Paris Orly, and I recommend checking them out in your spare time. FNAC is located in Orly 1 (Level 1, Public Area), Orly 3 (Duty Free), and Orly 4 (Duty Free), while Galeries Lafayette has a Royal Quartz Paris jewelry and watch boutique in Orly 4 after security on Level 1.

They really have it all here, from champagne and cosmetics to fashion, books and magazines. I like picking up a copy of French Vogue and browsing the stores whenever I fly through here. The French just do it better.

Culture at ORY

I live for an airport that wants you to spend more time there. It just means they take your needs seriously and want to make the experience pleasant.

There is a ton of fabulous art on display around Paris Orly Airport. The airport regularly partners with major Parisian cultural institutions like the Musée d’Orsay for special exhibitions, bringing a taste of Paris’s renowned art scene right to the terminals.

The airport often features entertainment to keep you busy, including gaming areas with foosball tables set up throughout the terminals for a quick game between flights.
